Piper Aztec avg price: $150,000 used, very used. Pilots licenses $15,000 + Multi Engine rating $6000 Plan on at least one engine overhaul $40,000, this year. So yeah, who can't afford a Piper Aztec, everyone has $200,000 + worth of change that's fallen between the seat cushions. Insurance, hangers, and general maintenance are nice little bonus costs. Not to kill the dream, but if you think you're getting into a twin as a first plane that everyone can afford, and for $40,000 , lol, that's not a dream, not even a viable fantasy.

For my 1954 Bonanza I figure insurance + hanger + annual I'm at 10K right there. That's with probably the cheapest hanger at my airport. Newer ones are a LOT more expensive. Some places in the country you can get a hanger for a song it seems. Near Washington DC it's good luck finding one.

My friend, first, the ercoupe is pronounced air coupe. Second, as far as it’s safety record, it was 100% fatal for my brother-in-law who had one until one sad day in Florida, when he died in a crash with it. He had been a very good pilot, a natural, who outflew me after I took him up for his first ride in a small airplane. It was known to be easy fly as it had a coordinated aileron/rudder combination. The last plane you showed is probably the hardest to fly, it has no flaps and it’s a tail-dragger. Taking off is trickier as is landing. Your video showed how hard it is to land at an airport with a short runway, as it has to be “slipped” to land. A slip is a maneuver where one wing is dipped and pointed in the direction of landing, causing it to lose altitude quickly without gaining speed so you can at the last moment turn it around, as shown in your video, and try to land it. Tail-draggers are more difficult to land properly than a tricycle landing gear. I learned on it’s kissing cousin, the Piper J3 Cub.

@@albradley5527 I don’t know about that. But I was an amusing pilot flying in the Cub as I bounced down the runway, did a ground loop, and ended up in a mud puddle coating the inside and outside with mud. There were plenty of witnesses as there was a tour of the airport going on just then. This was the first and oldest airport in the world from which the Wright Brothers were reputed to have flown.

I am a licensed aircraft mechanic ATP pilot flight instructor aircraft, instrument instructor and multi-engine instructor having thousands of hours of flying time. The reason for my brief resume is that all of the air speeds mentioned in the video are just like the prices mentioned way out of the realm of the actual aircraft's capability, even at full throttle and in a dive. All of the airplanes mentioned I have flown so I know what they can do and it is not what was mentioned in the video!!!!!!!

As a former owner of a PA-22 I can tell you that it's not as cheap as you think. Sure you might be able to pick up an aircraft for these prices but often its due to high engine or prop TBO. What's a new engine cost you might ask? Try depending on the make/model between $20,000 to $60,000 dollars. Prop overhaul is about another 5-10k. Another reason why prices might be low, old avionics or avionics that are past their due inspection. How much does that cost? Well to get re-inspected and recertified (IFR) try between 2-5K. Oh and lets not forget your annual inspection. for a complex airplane plan to spend about 10K a year for your annual. For something like a Ercoupe, PA22, 150, 152, 172 you might get lucky and only have to shell out about 2-3K a year for the inspection. hmmm oh yeah let us not forget insurance and fuel. If your a low time pilot still building hours you'll pay between 3-5k a year for a complex. For something simpler plan on between 800-2000 dollars. Finally Fuel, fuel will cost you on average about 5$ a gallon. For my PA-22 which holds 36 gallons. My fuel burn was about 9 gallons an hour. I am in no way trying to discourage people from getting their own plane but I would warn you that there are LOTS of hidden costs with aircraft ownership. Sure it gives you lots of freedom but you'll never be able to fly cheaper cross country then just buying a plane ticket. (for me to travel from the East Coast to west Coast would have taken me longer then in a car and cost me twice as much, about 2500 dollars round trip.

@@GlameTOP someone shouldn’t buy a plane unless they can afford, for example, an engine replacement the very next day which can cost $10,000+ easily. Simple door latches can be hundreds. Yes it’s expensive. The problem is when pilots can’t afford the maintenance and have engine failure in flight. That twin engine you listed mean 2x the engine maintenance too. Overall good maintenance is what keeps pilots alive buts it’s expensive.

Twenty years ago I passed on a nice 150 for 17,500. My son, who was 8 at the time, our beagle and full fuel would have been just a few pounds under max gross. The other two of us could not have lost enough weight to make up for how much an 8 year old would soon gain. What gets people in trouble is even old airplanes can be financed for a modest car payment because of 10 to 20 year terms. They are often priced near full value with fresh engines, good avionics, etc. So when trouble hits, the owner will try to go back to the lender for a bigger loan than the purchase. The resulting loan decline leads to deferred maintenance and scenes like the photo at the end. Also, I "prefighted" the 150 without the owners knowledge two days before we met to view the aircraft. Both wings were wet underneath. When I met with the owner, they were dry. He denied that the plane leaked fuel, and never knew he was caught in a lie. A few months later, he was caught in a tall tree on a night approach and died after rescue. These types of videos are worse than worthless. Be warned.

The Ercoupe 415-D is reasonably priced and the 150’s are $17,500 (with run out engines and the plane probably isn’t airworthy) but they usually go for around $29,000 to $40,000 and I’ve never even heard of the last airplane so I’m not even gonna try

What utter rubbish re the light twins' initial acquisition costs. There's a reason their owners want to unload them at such a lowball price. What a prospective purchaser of a light twin has to understand is that they are buying an aircraft that new today is well north of $1M, so parts and operating costs will be commensurate. Each engine overhaul alone is more than the stated purchase price of the aircraft. Then there is upgrading the legacy avionics, ensuring that all of the FAA Airworthiness Directives and manufacturer's mandatory Service Bulletins are complied with, getting a multi-engine rating and enough time to be insurable, etc. Unless one has a considerable net worth, buying a more sensible single engine aircraft starts looking like a much better proposition financially.

30+ year old ones... If you get any of those planes expect to pay 2-3x on just getting it ready to be air worthy. a 80s Cessna 150 with analog panel thats air worthy is still like 40-50k

@@LESPAUL44mag watching KZbin crash and eff up videos... seems like most of them are beechcraft bonanza, followed by Mooney and Cirrus.... I think those three seem to be about two thirds to three fourths of the videos...

@@toadamine Possibly though I'd rather rely on statistics than anecdotal evidence. That being said with my limited aviation knowledge I would attribute those crashed (especially the Cirrus SR22 and Beechcraft Bonanza which was known as the "doctor killer") planes to the fact you can fly them with a basic single engine license and they have a considerably more airspeed and power than say a high winged cessna (150,172) which is the usual choice for beginner pilots.

How much this bothers me that anyone can say anything without assuming any responsibility. A 1980 Piper Aztec with about 1,000 hours before SFRM engines, sells for $180,000. Will find one in a scrapyard for $40.000.- and obviously not airworthy. Same thing the Beechcraft. Why do you do this?

dont say i dont know what im talking about because im a student pilot nd have a great idea. all these planes are cheap becuase of their age. they are very uncommon because of how unreliable (sparing newer 150s) so dont even look st thse, look for a censa 152, 172 and a piper pa if you want more seating
