In this video I explain 5 techniques for learning new vocabulary effectively in English (and any language!)
Many English language students find it difficult to retain new vocabulary such as phrasal verbs.
Expanding your vocabulary bank will help to improve your fluency and confidence when speaking in English and is also essential for passing English exams such as the Cambridge exams: B2 first (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE) and C2 Proficiency (CPE) as well as IELTS and TOEFL.
If you have any extra tips, please share them in the comments to helps others.
Cheers!

1-I used to write random funny , strange , sad,happy sentences down on the group with other people who are learning english as well. Because I realized I remember more with emotion , watching pictures etc 2-to associate new words with other similar word or the meaning while I’m imagining a scenario in my mind and after to say them during a call or a conversation without making any sense in the conversation 😂 but it’s alright for me 3-I used to use memory place and anki but for me wasn’t working because that’s was only in a short memory ⭐️I’m not afraid to make mistakes I only afraid what topic , or how to start an interesting conversation . I’m a shy and lonely person in my life and it’s quite difficult for that 😂 ⭐️but I’m still struggling with the new words that I can’t remember with all those techniques: do you have some advice for that please ? Anyway, thank you for your wonderful video that’s exactly That i needed to watch

I like to learn new words by their sound. It's maybe because I'm really keen on music. Repeating its sound, the pronunciation, helps my brain to retain the meaning.

Hi Ben. Thank you for these useful tips. The problem is that being a C1 student I am forced to learn many words from many topics. Besides, as you know well and B42 too, the more you learn the less you know. Well, another tip could be travelling to Anglo-Saxon countries for holidays as many times as anyone be able to. Best wishes.

Excellent! Of all your tips, my favorite is the first. Pulp and octopus 😂, it happens to me often in English, and you are right because when I face these little embarrassing situations I get to learn the word or expression forever. I learn quite a bit of vocabulary with a deep reading type and, let's make ir clear, the key is repetition (over and over, over and over again). Just comment on something really weird that happens to me from time to time. There are words that I don't want to learn but I learn unintentionally. For instance "upholstery" (oh my gosh I can not forget it) When will I use this word? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@tothepointenglishwithben.
@tothepointenglishwithben. 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joan! Yes, emotional connection is extremely important. I find repetition only works when I use the words in context and in real situations. But that's just how my brain works. Upholstery is a great word... I hope you get the chance to use it one day!! 🙂

I don't do it yet, but I've heard about keeping a diary. You open a notebook and write on its pages what happened in your life today, how it made you feel, and what you would like to do tomorrow or whatever… I think you've got it, a diary. That's the thing I should try.

my father made me write a 1 page note what the last book I read was about. Never min what langage the book was in- the page had to be in English. I despised the excercise wholeheartedly. But these days, I say it was genius.

Extra tip: whenever you can't remember a word, looking up its etymology might help. For example, I couldn't remember the word "curfew" mentioned in the video when I first came across it many years ago. I couldn't relate it to anything I knew. Where does it come from? It comes from French "couvre feu" = "cover the fire": When people still had fires in their homes, they covered (or extinguished) the fire before finishing the day and going to bed. From the moment I had made this connection, I never forgot the word and its meaning.

I do apply some of these techniques. I need to start letting go of my desire to learn multiple meanings of the words when I find them while reading a book. Somehow I think this is useful. I try to learn multiples because when I learn four meanings for the same word, I may forget one or two, but I won't forget all of them, so the word sticks, and I learn with phrases. Of course. But some words like a set, which has four hundred plus meanings, I don't dare to do it hahahahha. The downside of this is that is a tad time-consuming. I haven't yet discovered if it would be better to learn each meaning every time I came across the word in a different topic or keep doing it and learning their multiple meanings in advance. What are your takes on that Ben?
@tothepointenglishwithben.
@tothepointenglishwithben. 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's great to dive deeply into a world's meanings and uses. That way you'll get a more accurate understanding of the contexts in which you can use it. Of course, the downside of that is that it's very time consuming and arduous. However, if you enjoy it, go for it!
