Stoner/Doom fan here. Spot on advice. Having an amp with a clean tone is also a key part of it as you said. Some of the best bargain amps/combos in the US are anything made by Peavey.

Definitely. Can always build usable tones with only pedals.

I have a clone of an Elk Sustainar. It used to be my favourite sounding dirt until I received my octave RAT. Lovingly been referring to it as the “What’s Best in Life?” Pedal

I always pair a chorus and od with my fuzz. It goes od into fuzz into dist into chorus into delay and reverb. Gotta have a cool od going into the fuzz to make it firey. The fuzz is like a dragon and Chorus multiples the signal which turns it into a fire breathing hydra beast.

I agree you don’t need to spend a ton, and just go for the classics, however, I’ve been looking at the Sunn Life V3 pedal as it’s essentially a distortion, Octave and boost in one, isn’t that much more than buying 3 pedals separately, and saves in space… but I do agree that you don’t need to fork out a ton to get the sound.

As someone who's used fuzzes like FZ-2, different versions of the Big Muff, boutique shit like Dunwich Fuzzthrone etc etc etc, my favourite is the RAT. Max out the distortion and VOLUME and you will have an absolutely crushing distortion for pretty cheap. LM308 or OP07 doesn't matter, they just crush. Behringer SF300 is cool but it's not as useful as other fuzzes/distortions because you're pretty much locked to power chords or chords that harmonize similarly. This is due to the octaving effect it has and also applies to pedals like Life Pedal if you lean into the octave a lot.

I use the behringer hm-2 clone for distortion and fuzz, it covers a lot of ground. When you start adding in amp gain amd EQ pedals, it does most of the things. I use an OD into the hm300 and everything after that i have a digitech rp150 with everything turned off except the fx I'm using and blank channels between for easy switching. Way less tap dancing and my board is like $100, plus ot sounds great.

I have an or100, 2 4x12s and every ‘doom’ pedal under the fucking sun at this point. Coming out the other end of the rabbit hole, I’ve learnt the classics are a classic for a reason. The rat, sf300, any muff (I love the rams head), eq pedal and something like a dispatch master/ghost echo and your set. It’s so easy to get caught up in this genre. I even have gone to a fender bassman 59 combo for the most part and that thing fucking ‘dooms’ and is the same weight as my or100 alone 😅

I agree man. That's why I don't buy vintage gear as well. A good orange/marshall amp, basic pedals, good humbucker guitar and you're good to go

Wata’s fuzz is an Elk BM sustainer but EQD Hizumitas is the colab with Wata based on the Elk. The Elk if you can get one is expensive. The Hizumitas is not expensive and it is great. I can’t really tell the difference between the Berhinger fuzz and the Boss-it is very good for near no money.

This is a great video for those who are looking to get in to play doom, stoner sludge etc. Great work mate. I actually managed to snag a life pedal made by a guy who's tuning it more for baritone frequencies. But even as it is, it's a great pedal for those who can afford it.

For people who like to use Rat as a doom pedal try out EHQ Life Pedal. Second best for me would be Green Russian. (or get both)

Just a weird happenstance thing ppl seeing this may relate to. I bought an original army-green Big Muff brand new, and it was cheaper than the primary couple of Muffs. It was a “cheap, inferior” version of the Muff. Mid 90s or thereabouts. It sounded GREAT, but it felt less well-built than a standard Muff. The dials weren’t even aligned right; the zero position on the volume control was at 5 o’clock, well past the “0” diagram, and full was about 1 o’clock, very well short of “10”. Had it a few years, then it died, and I tossed it. Several years later, I start hearing about people paying a grand for used specimens, and there’s this big fetish about them now.

The da120 is best as a pre amp…it’s overkill if your going into higher gain amps…but really helps out for those older solid state combo amps.
@elephant.musicofficial7918 Жыл бұрын
Yes, it can over do the gain. However, most people probably use it for the tone.

I actually prefer an octave down, OC-2 baby! But some ovatave is a must, apart from fuzz and dist ofcourse, wah is always grrat, phase is huge in doom too (delay and reverb is just the icing on the cake).

i feel so ashamed to admit just how picky i am with all these pedals. Im as big into doom as i think you can be, yet i seem to hate most fuzz. the rat and DA120 are my flavors. i think i've come to the realization that there is just something wrong with me.
@elephant.musicofficial7918 Жыл бұрын
It's all good, man. That's what you like. To be honest, my favourite pedals are overdrive pedals. As long as it's rockin, you can play doom. For some reason, there seems to be a lot of unwritten rules with doom that don't always need to be followed.
@C0nnie Жыл бұрын
@@elephant.musicofficial7918 i find myself gravitating to that "blown out" sound, which I guess borders on fuzz. Put an overdrive in that and who knows what kind of rift you'll open

Forget the fuzz pedals, use a RAT instead, crank it and boost it with an over drive and it will fuzz like a beautiful. OD > RAT = gain sorted now your free to obsess over phasers.
