As a massive Sabbath/stoner rock/doom fan this video is right up my alley! As with everything about stoner/doom it’s totally out of step with the contemporary world so this challenge of buying a doom rig from new seems way harder than it would be buying secondhand 😂 Oz absolutely smashed it! That Bugera's a beast. I use it blended with a DSL. The main tone is the DSL, but the Bugera fills it out to make the little Marshall combo sound like a 100 watt head, and I spend the first ten minutes of playing just being impressed by the first chord I hit....

I don't play in a doom band but I use Hizumitas for lead & rhythm on metal stuff. I run it into a solid state JC120/77 & tubed Orange Dark Terror & you could absolutely do stoner/doom with it. With tons of gain on tap, you dont have a wall of amps to lug around ...by yo' damn self. So great to hear Oz. Something other than the SAME blue licks, shreddhead sweep picking arpeggios and/or pious church sus 4 chords that pervade YT gtr channels.

As far as doom bands not using solid state, two of the bigger ones I can think of use primarily solid state. Eyehategod uses solid state Randall heads I believe and I remember from the Melvin's rig rundown Buzz says he uses solid state amps (most notably Sunn Beta Lead). I know they're technically sludge, but that's basically a subgenre of doom.

I have no idea what I just listened to, but I stuck it out because there seemed to be a tangible objective. To me It all sounded like a low budget student sci-fi movie. Then when Oz pulled on the sg and kicked in the ‘76 with the little Bugera- I really got it and realised that the SG sounded great with any of the pedals. Clearly committed to the genre Oz should be put in charge of all tone mangling, sonic soundscape making vids in future. And wardrobe, definitely wardrobe. Well done.

For those that don't know the line 6 helix products now contain a suite of doom specific amps and pedals. You can literally get a Sunn Model T paired with a rat pedal and get the exact same tone as the doom bands you listen to. Line 6 helix HX stomp for £449, Guitar for anywhere from £200 to £550 if you want. If you go for a cheap guitar you could even spend £150 on an FRFR speaker or studio monitors for the HX stomp if you dont own a PC already.
@athmaid Жыл бұрын
Haven't tried the fuzzes on Helix yet. I heard getting a digital one right is pretty hard. But I'm no fuzz expert, what do you think about the quality of the fuzzes on the Helix? Helix Native is also an option for the laptop musicians among us, recently got it for 200 dollars (50% off)
@SocialistFish Жыл бұрын
@Gordon Beck I'm a huge helix evangelist - it's the best musical tool I've spent money on and I think every serious guitarist should have one. That said I think the fuzz units on the helix are it's weakest feature. You can get by using one but if you have the option to have a legit fuzz unit in front of the helix you'll have better results.
@athmaid Жыл бұрын
@@SocialistFish do you know whether it's possible to to do a send and return to a different plugin inside a Helix Native signal chain? If so I could use one of the NeuralDSP fuzzes, they're pretty good imho

While you certainly can go the expensive vintage tube amp route pretty much any amp with power, lots of mids and lots of low end will do just fine when paired with a nice fuzz, as long as its voiced more on the loose vintage side of things.
