For my rugby training, I have a whole day of the week dedicated to neck and trap training. Shrugs are huge for this type of growth but I starting off I recommend doing on the floor exercises (kinda like neck crunches if that makes sense) then a couple weeks in you try adding weight. I tried going heavy with it straight up and it gave me terrible cramps and soreness so bad it was agony to turn my head side to side. Take care of your neck guys, you use it more than you think.

I have got some very good results first using deadlifts, barbell rows and weighted chin ups for my upper back and traps plus barbell strict presses and Josh Bryant’ Jailhouse strong neck movements and then using weight plates of the front of my neck and using a neck harness for the flexion. Also I want to say I do security work where looking like you could rip someone’s head off comes in handy and also I was always small and weak and my neck didn’t fell great after heavy deadlifts so I began training my neck to get some size and strength there and have made some great gains.

Not to talk trash, but u see these big guys in the gym with skinny necks and it just doesn't look right, it's definitely important to train the neck. I was training neck 5 days a week when I started and now about 3 days. My neck went from 15 inches to 17 and a half inches, so I can definitely see and say my neck has gotten much thicker for sure. Would you say neck extensions are required? Currently doing neck curls, and side neck curls. Along with power shrugs, at the knee rack pulls, RDLs, plenty of rear delt work, and rows. So overall quite a bit of trap/back of neck work from the non direct exercises. I've tried doing neck extensions but I find I can't recover from them fast enough and sometimes that leads to tweaking the neck the wrong way. Never during the excersise, but seemingly over night I can wake up with a stiff neck which can impead performance in the other lifts.
