@Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk, would you consider a bi-turbo V8 Toyota Diesel? Getting your better mileage as well as cheaper price at the pumps? And I’m sure would be quiet as well. Had ‘84 (Pre-Tacoma) extra cab 4x4, 5 speed with factory non-turbo diesel. It was a nice truck, but, extended family came into picture, so sold to someone who needed the 4c4 capabilities worse than I.

Good review and as a 16 Tundra owner with zero issues, the plus and minuses were fair and for a change the comments were civil. As I have said many times, its your money and if you want reliability and know the tradeoffs, you should not have to defend your purchase. Likewise, I don't criticize others who want to spend it on other brands. Be nice to those Tundra owners and they may stop and pick you up if you've broken down.

This is great watching this video 2 years later and reading the comments while looking to purchase a used 2020 in 2022 (almost 2023). Sorting out all of the comments and seeing now what the 2022 Tundra introduced. weighing all the comments and being able to purchase the new 2023 Tundra or any F150 or Ram Laramie I would still take a 2020 Tundra. The fancy iPad dashboards are boring after 5 minutes and are just more things to break. The rides are so smooth it loses the appeal of owning a truck. there's no more response from the road. I could literally being riding off the shoulder and not notice it. Two to three years later this model Tundra is a more comfortable cab, a more reliable drivetrain and has the features that matter to a person who wants a touch for a truck and not a glorified soccer mom SUV. Yeah, mileage sucks but I won't have to spend money on repairs and downtime without a truck - that would end up costing more than the repairs. As Im picking up my used 2020 with 33,000 miles on it for $45,000 my neighbor is ordering his 2023 for $65,000. Even though I could afford it I would not trust the new drivetrain for a few years til they have worked out the kinks - and then I will at least still have a vehicle with resale value should I decide to go that route.

Just traded in my 07 Tundra for a 2020. Wanted to wait for the 2022 but couldn’t wait that long. Overall I’m pretty impressed with this truck. Personally I think it’s plenty “Techy” but to each his own. I’m impressed with the Toyota Safety Sense and how confident the truck pulls my boat. I looked at other brands and yes a little fancier inside and more technology which neither is very important to me. And so many different horror stories I’ve heard from domestic truck owners dealing with reliability. Mileage isn’t great of course but pulling my boat I got just over 14 mpg? 19’ boat maybe 3-4,000 lbs. Anyway I don’t understand why so many people bad mouth the Tundra especially if your looking for a long term truck like I do? BTW the dealership where I bought this truck told me in the last week they’ve serviced (oil change) 2 Tundras (second generation) one with over 500 k miles the other over 600 k miles. My 07 had 250 k hard miles. Besides regular maintenance 1 starter. That’s it...

As a first time tundra owner, having this exact truck coming from an f150, I can add to the convo. The tundra has minimum storage space compared to my 2009 f150. The cup holders are to small to hold normal size Gatorade’s or larger sized drinks. No cooled seats. No step ladder/step or way to get into the bed easily without jumping up. The steering wheel volume and next track buttons should be reversed. Skip next track button should be where the volume buttons are, left and right and the volume buttons should be up and down. Instead it’s opposite. Stock sound system does not go loud enough. No grab handle on drivers side door. CarPlay isn’t wireless. Back seat floor isn’t flat and has no under seat storage. The paint is extremely thin. Already have a few scratches. My ac unit will not completely shut off the vents that I turn off and continues to blow small amounts of air even though I turned that particular vent off or switched to a different vent. Back up camera is garbage quality. Sometimes the screen lags when connected to CarPlay when making calls or freezes. Cruise control default mode is always set on adaptive mode and you have to hold the button down to switch it to normal old school cruise control every single time you use it. I hate the auto windows. . Giant key fab. Minor complaints, but the truck would be even better with these improvements. Bought it for the reliability and looks mainly.

The Tundra is a wonderful truck. It is on my short list. Personally I'm in the market for a new truck within the next year or so. I have looked and test drove a lot of different brands. The Tundra (acually any of the Tundra model's) has reliability like I want, crash rating unfortunately is a bit poor (I'm sure the next generation will fix this issue), and a locking rear differential would be appreciated. I don't think its unresonable as a consumer spending my hard earned money on a truck to expect a bit better fuel mileage from the Tundra. It's like they just don't care and stopped trying regarding that part. just my 2 cents but this is 2020 there no way that Toyota shouldn't be able to offer a different transmission like a 8 speed and a different rear end gearing to help with the mileage. Great truck I agree but come on Toyota. 430 rear end gears on a 1/2 ton crew cab. Maybe give us as consumer's a option package to purchase a model that will achieve something like maybe 22 combined mpg. I appreciate the reliability debate but Toyota has to have the technology to make this same truck with better fuel economy & without sacrificing there reliability. All truck models including the Toyota Tundra aren't cheap. It's a lot of money that we are spending on our trucks. Again I personally don't think it's too much to ask a manufacturer to offer a model that will achieve a bit better fuel economy at the same time as there continued reliability. I drive about 20,000 miles a year and the bit better fuel mileage would be appreciated.

Ever since the recession of 2008, Toyota has been out of the full size truck game. I would argue that a cash starved Nissan has put more effort into their full size truck than Toyota has. It's quite pathetic when you realize that Toyota has been the global sales leader for many years in recent history.

I always had a ford, my grandfather's Grand Torino, to my Mustang 5.0 in college, to my Thunderbird after college, to my F150 after marriage (my passive-aggressive way of not getting a minivan when the kids started coming), then to a Honda Odyssey LX after one of the kids fell out of the truck when trying to exit the door. Then two decades of Hondas. Now, that the youngest kid is in high school, I wanted a truck, but instead of buying another F150, I bought a Toyota Tundra TRD Crewmax. It feel like a Ford. It vibrates when I start the engine. And it looks like a truck. As loyal as I've become to Honda because of its reliability, I couldn't buy the soy-boy Ridgeline. I may take the jump to Toyota. I'm planning my midlife crisis in a few years, so I may consider a Lexus because a corvette seems a bit... cliché.

Yeah apparently the rancher was loading 12 heads on a 24ft gooseneck.and still the front end held up at 100k no leaks etc... I think this is the best half ton truck you can buy still as of now. What's interesting is that it proves rigidity does not mean strength. You'll be less likely to take more road input with a fully boxed frame than an open c as the c channel will flex to increase the impulse stretching that force over time.

In 2018 I bought a new TRD offroad limited doublecab. I love every thing about it but the salesman talked me into ordering a 2019 TRD Pro. I wanted all the accessories that my limited had but was told that most of them were not available on the pro even though they are available on the crewcab. I was told that they would try to get me what I wanted but couldn't promise. The only thing that I didn't want was the predator running boards, I wanted a different set. When the truck came in it had none of the accessories I wanted and it had the predator running boards so needless to say I didn't get the truck. @Pickuptrucktalk

Good question. Here is what I found: "Yes. Drivers in equipped Toyota models are able to switch between the dynamic radar cruise control system and a traditional cruise control system. To do so, push and hold the dynamic radar cruise control button on your Toyota steering wheel for about 2 seconds. Your multi-information display cruise control indicator light should change, and your cruise control system should switch. Once the engine is turned off, your vehicle will automatically default to the dynamic radar cruise control setting." Hope that helps.

I've had a 2019 Ram 1500 since July and it is a middle of the road trim package. My truck is WAY more and better laid out than this truck. Bigger engine with more torque and HP and 20MPG, no lie. Ram has a bigger screen, better camera, updated everything, the most quiet and comfortable ride ever and I've owned new trucks since 1980. Ram has mated an 8 speed torque flight to their hemi since 2012 plus now they offer the hybrid option to the hemi. In everyway the Ram is a better truck and it is less $. My Ram 1500 4x4 has more options and comforts with a lower price tag than this truck. This TRD is not junk nor am I saying that. All new trucks are great regardless of who makes them. I'm saying that the Ram is better across the board than this truck at a better price. I've owned Rams since 1995 and they have been reliable and trouble free for me. Most of my friends own either GMCs of Fords and they all say that my Rams have been more reliable, and in my case that is true. Much different from the trucks I owned previously. While this truck definitely hits the mark on reliability, Toyota really missed the mark on off road capability. It's a TRD PRO that doesn't even come close to batting in the same league as it's Tacoma and even more so 4Runner counterparts. No rear locker, no true off road capable tire, and a tire way too small for even a factory 1/2 ton 4x4 performance package considering most manufactures are offering something in the realm of a 33' x 11'. I feel like Toyota could really hit the mark with this truck if they included a selectable E-locker in the rear axle, perhaps a helical in the IFS diff, and set of 33' off road tires. Ultimately what Toyota has built here is a truck you drive on a well traveled dirt road to a common camp site, not a truck you drive on a rough trail to a remote area with off shoots leading to camp sites with awesome views which 99.9% of the world's population will never see. They would be better off saving the consumer some money and making this package a rear wheel drive only option because realistically this truck couldn't tackle anything beyond a very mild trail.

There's really no excuse for the lack of features in the TRD pro Toyotas. Those tires are horrible for off road and Michelin is an expensive brand. They could probably get duratracs or ko2s on that truck for the same price and it would improve the truck's capability a lot! Toyota's rear locker excuse is getting old too. Everyone else has it! I know the TFL video you’re referring to, that was mostly demonstrating muddy off-roading, there are other types off-roading situations where a real locker will come in handy.
