I believe this idea of introverts needing to be "fixed" is due to the way media portrayes the World and the World feeling more extrovert friendly. That has in a way lead to people think of extroversion as "normal" and some people have gotten this urge to get rid of the things deemed as weird, sometimes without even considering that not being "normal" is good.

@@SleepingGroke This was obvious in the C-19 lockdowns where the media went berserk about the problems of extroverts; oh, the stress,oh the struggles of being forced to stay at home and not relate to people. The fact this is daily inflicted on introverts in normal life was never really noticed, and lo, we went back to normal and suddenly introverts are expected to act like extroverts again.

She left me in time and I respect that as she wanted to explore the world and needed a friend that wasn't all people shy and aloof. And I wasn't that friend. I am fine staying at home most weekends and hanging out with 1/2 friends, but apparently no one else in my environment is, always trying to force me to hang out more, to be more social, to meet more new people (which I'm okay with, but as mentioned I dislike the small talk so...) Wish I had access to these kind of videos growing up in the 90s so I could show my extremely extroverted dad that I didn't go hide in my room after a while of having large gatherings to be rude but I needed time to recharge. He would force me out and to interact with his friends while I had no energy to. Eventually he'd get upset that I was being so quiet that he he would tell me to go back to my room, "Seeing as you're being so rude and not participating."

As an introvert, I completely agree with writing rather than talking. I always form my communication better as I write. When I try to talk, I usually panic and stutter a bit even though I have a sentenced form in my mind 🤣 It just takes awhile to get to know introverts. Another thing is we're patient with others as well when we peak an interest in them.

Oh this is the bane of my existence. My mind moves quick but my mouth doesn’t. I often speak very fast, slur my words together, and sometimes skip over them. Skipping words is the worst. I’ll try and say it again to make sure I’m being understood but that requires me to backtrack through my train of thought and pick right back up where I left off, leading to mumbling or being at a loss for words. I have no trouble whatsoever with lying though. It’s probably just an artifact of my strict upbringing but I can always come up with a coherent and plausible story to explain what I was caught doing in under a second while speaking clearly.

As an extrovert whose partner is an introvert, and never having had any introverted friends up until now, these things took a while to figure out for me! A lot of behaviours and social needs are just so fundamentally different and it's hard to get your head around that at first when you have nothing but your own experience to go on. But it can be really enjoyable and beneficial for both people involved as long as there's mutual understanding :)

I'm glad you're improving your understanding of introverts!! Bare in mind that shyness isn't an introvert quality, it's a human quality associated with introverts. @@mimisolo7778 Oh, and I guess it's also important to mention that to extroverts, some of these behaviours can even seem alarming at first, especially when (like me) they've been around people with depression or anxiety disorders or have experienced them personally. Makes it hard not to worry at first, especially when an introvert doesn't easily share what's going on in their head, so "alone time" can be interpreted as "not reaching out". As always, communication is key :)

As an introvert, I read a lot about introverts to better understand myself. However, this was the first time I learned that introverts prefer writing to speaking. That would absolutely be me. Writing allows me to organize and develop my flood of thoughts on a particular subject; speaking does not. In fact, I enjoyed writing so much that I studied to become a journalist in my younger years. (Sadly, that did not happen.)

The last one is so true. I'm and introvert and my boyfriend is an extrovert. At the beginning he kept on trying to make me more social, but after explaining to him a hundred times that I don't like that, he finally understood and stopped trying to "make me more social". However, I have a friend, who even after explaining it to a MILLION times, he still doesn't get it. "How can you be burnt out after going out? Why do you need so much rest? Don't be lazy" 😑😑😑😑

I had that same issue. It's hard to be an introvert around extroverts. My boyfriend would be upset at me because I would not socialize with his friends, embarrassing him in the sense. I told him I'm exhausted from the day around people, from work to family. He had to give his friends some excuse that I was tired and it was past my bedtime. Again, that is not it. I get overwhelmed within a large gathering for a long period of time and i cant make a connection with people i can't see my self share a common interest in. It's who I'm. I need peace and quiet everyday before I can deal with the world. He never understood why i perfer the quietness versus his need to be in noise all the time, everyday. But eventually he understood and no longer forces me to interact with his friends anymore. He does it and I'm just listen. I didn't choose to be an introvert, none of us did, but it's our life, our function.

I’m an INFP! We find it equally fascinating to see extroverts socialize for hours and not need a break. Usually I will read or watch KZbin for my recharge time. When my house is empty I’ll put on loud music and dance however I want to. I tend to avoid people because I have a lot of socially based anxiety so even just being around people in silence is heavily draining. As for tips- it’s all about how you think of it. Me, I can do anything at all for my alone time because I am content with my own company/skills. I may not have any confidence but alone time is just about being in the moment and being able to do whatever you want without the pressures of people watching or judging you. Everyone judges; it may not be a bad judgement but they still judge and that’s tiring. So having those moments where it’s just you and only you have a say in what you do and when you do it is very calming. I appreciate your view of befriending introverts. I can say we really appreciate having an extrovert friend when we have the energy to go out(so you can deal with all the people) and also appreciate when they recognize when it’s too much and aren’t offended by us needing breaks.

@Pauline Elric I LOVE INFP people! Thank you for the tips btw it's really interesting to know your POV, because I simply do whatever I want in crowds and don't care about judgements :D that's why I don't get tired of socializing It's mostly staying unbothered when people don't like it when you are being you, I just avoid them And it's also helpful because at least in my community, introverts are easily misunderstood and others think they are weird or selfish... But because I had really high depression and anxiety levels, I understand them, so I tend to attract a lot of introverts, which makes me kinda scared sometimes because I'm afraid I'll make them uncomfortable. So I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts

As an introvert, I never think of it as alone time. The only real difference between introverts and extroverts is where they get their energy from, so even though I actually really enjoy talking to people(particularly close friends) I always need time to rest afterwards. Also it's important that you're spending time alone because you want to and you're doing something that genuinely interests you, otherwise you get bored/lonely. Also my question is this: if extroverts gain their energy from social interaction, do they need to recharge after time alone, or do they find it soothing? I'd love to be able to know that because I've never quite understood how people like that function:P

Small Talk is something I only use to fill up space. I'm very selective about my friends. So when someone brings me into a group I don't enjoy it. If someone breaks my trust I get very guarded on my friendships for a long time. Which ends up making me feel lonely even when with my closest friends. It creates problems when someone is trying to find my interests based of my small talk, because half of what I'm talking about could just be filling up space. Which I can find myself being an annoyance to friends.

Sometimes small talk can be nice for me, but it depends. I have no friends irl anymore, so when someone talks to me I feel like I am not that lonely. Feel myself a human being and that someone shows interest in me, even if just a little. And some time ago it was like an energy battery for me, talking to people from my class. I always thought that I am an introvert, and I still feel like it, but can't help but feel lonely sometimes. And "like writing more than speaking" used to be so true for me, but now it's more like "like sending voice messages more than speaking and writing", lol. Yes I learned something valuable from this video. Being an introvert often I feel on the defensive because people assume there’s something wrong with me. As if I needed their approval? It makes me very paranoid too at times because I am sensitive and feel less than compared to others who are more gregarious. It’s as if They are giving me an ultimatum like Snap out of it! Or nobody’s gonna want to hang around with you ever! My response to that is OK! Because mainly I am so furious at their assumptions! Especially people who are my family and friends who think they’re doing me a favor by telling me the truth and hijacking me into activities that I don’t enjoy that make me very deregulated and resentful! so yeah maybe I just need to lighten up a little bit?

Definitely related to all of these points. I'm not opposed to going out and being around people per se but I have places I choose to go and even in those environments I won't engage with everyone. And even though I don't like small talk if I can be quiet in those instances and tune in and out of conversations involving small talk and learn about the more emotional side of that sort of person through those means I'm definitely happier. I just don't want it to be me since I don't think I'll ever understand how to take part in that style of conversation. Definitely intellectual subjects or intellectual subjects I care about like discussing a movie or TV show are what make me want to talk, emotions or how your family is doing or job stuff or life, it isn't that I don't care but that doesn't form as a question for me I feel like I'm ranting a bit although like the video discusses writing things out is more comfortable for introverts, probably why I prefer texting to phone calls but it's hard when I don't think people understand my persona and that when I see personality traits that are me in a video to not think about it in a little more depth. Regardless of those other thoughts this was a good video and I think it's one that I wouldn't mind showing to others to just say this sums up who I am. Including stating the following "I struggle putting it into words and feel like I might be insulting you by my traits but it's who I am." It's definitely something I need my mother to understand.

I'm introverted and I have social anxiety. But I can occasionally still speak in front of groups. But the only groups that I can really speak to are groups of people that I know. Fkr example I can read and sometimes pray in front of my church group (as long as someone has warned me that i will be doing that. Without warning its very stressful), but in front of strangers I almost will not speak and I certainly will not act like myself (which I mean is like my friends say that I am a very calm and kind person with actual wisdom but those who only just met me see someone who is shy and to some degree abrasive).

Can't find much words here because everything fits to me perfectly. x3 I especially like the point called "We don't need fixing". At my school years I really had to deal HARD with it because much of my class mates were very extroverted. People who want to have loud company in big groups, or those who like to joke much around just don't understand, that WE love peace, small safe groups with values and everything, which was mentioned in this episode. Another great piece of work dear Psych2go! I really love what you guys do on this chanel! I swear. If I would know all you are showing here when I was at my school times, I would take things a lot easier than I did. Thank you for making me see the past things i na different perspective now without judging it so hard anymore. :)

Can't really agree to 1 and 2. Small talk for me often is quite a good way to spend time with people who aren't my friends. Imagine, waiting for a lesson to start or a bus to come - you can talk to someone, maybe even laugh. Talking usually much better then chatting, especially with people you love.

I am definitely an introvert but I never connected my disdain of phone calls to it before. It makes so much sense! I have adapted to accept and make more phone calls than I would normally but I try to get the basics of what will need to be discussed beforehand so that I can prepare and be of better help during the phone call.

I am an introvert and my grandma is one of the most extroverted people I know. She doesn't always get me. She finds it sad if I don't meet up with friends in the weekend and believes I need to be 'fixed' . She thinks I only avoid social contact because I am shy but she doesn't seem to understand that I looovee being alone. I remember there even was a time were she kept encouraging me to be different and compared me with people who where more outgoing than me. For a while I also thought I needed to be fixed but I no longer think that way. I know she's only trying to make me happy and wants me to live my life to the fullest but we are just completely different people. Lately my grandma has been more understanding of me. When we are together she makes sure to avoid places with a lot of people and that makes me really happy😊

Omg! This video describes me to a T! I do all of these things. I try to be more social but it is draining and getting to know a person at a party is really difficult. Great video! I'm so glad you made it clear that being an introvert is not a flaw! I can't tell if I'm an introvert or an extrovert. I do really like my alone time because I do have so many project ideas, but I also like spending time with people and getting closer to them. My sister says I'm an extrovert with social anxiety. I think that's a pretty accurate description.
