This podcast had a very special meaning for me. A week ago I received a phone call that my son had been found dead in his apartment. This is something no parent should have to go through. What I heard Mark say is that death is a part of the experience of life. We can't experience life without experiencing death. This brought a sense of peace to me. Rather than fighting the grief, I can embrace it as a human experience. Erik is gone, but his memory can never be taken from us. Thank you, Mark, for helping me through this time.

A general rule of life that's made living a lot easier for me: Never assume malice when incompetence explains the same thing. It's a lot easier to think about people not paying attention rather than thinking they're deliberately fucking me over.
@thelordmemnoch
@thelordmemnoch Ай бұрын
I don't know about this one. I have always thought this way and for the life of me couldn't understand why things weren't going better for me. Once I started attributing malice, rather than incompetence, not only did their behavior change, but my tolerance to them as well. I think the difference is between an isolated incident and a consistent pattern.

1 You are not special. 2 you will die after few years. 3 Some things cant be controlled. 4 You doest matter for the universe. except close relatives they too will start laughing after few months after you die. 5. There is possibility of bad , and injustice happening to u no matter how good you are.

4 “ LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered- how fleeting my life is. 5 You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.” Interlude 6 We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. 7 And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you. (Psalm 39; 4-7)

I was at my lowest too just after covid. So much growth followed, it sounds cheesy maybe but it's the truth. The bigger the grief the bigger the potential growth. But you have to turn the tables thought, by face the primal cause of your state below the surface. For me it meant getting in a serious long term therapy, i think many people should to just like he said in the video. Unraveling past conditionnement. I'm the strongest version of myself now, life is good

Then you'll like this....The Number One Absolute Truth that will change your life is so amazingly good and wonderful...that men have instead lied to themselves and denied this Truth, masochists that we are! What is that Number One Truth? YOU ARE NOT A "SINNER" AND NO ONE DIED FOR YOUR SINS...because "I have said ye are gods" as "the Kingdom of GOD is within you"!! You have simply forgotten Who you are (a son of GOD) and THAT is the "good news" of Jesus Christ that men have corrupted into the bad news of the anti-Christ, which is entirely untrue! The biblical prophet Elijah has returned, as prophesied, and testifies.

I heard you say in an interview that you are more than one year sober. It seems like some of your writing and thinking in the subtle art was leading to that - about us all seeking to go from high to high and how ridiculous that is as a goal. I think a lot of us would love to see a podcast episode in which you discuss your journey through sobriety and what was hard and why you maintained it and how you are feeling now as a result of it.

As a High School PE teacher for 30 years, my students knew if they had me as their teacher they would need to "earn their balls" as I would say to them!. I was the black sheep out of our PE Staff who would simply take them to the gym, grab the Basketball rack and volleyballs and let the kids have them and then the teachers would chat. My students knew that they would have to earn their balls: 5 min warm up jog, stretch, calisthetics, planks, and top off with sprints and then they "earned their balls". Most of the time I did the workout with them. Nothing like getting paid to workout! And if it wasn't Friday, there was drills and skills to develop. I had so many students over the years come back to thank me explaining how my mantra of "earning your balls" applies to all of life itself for the feeling of earning your stuff and the feeling of Happiness(contentedness is a better term which is more sustainable as happiness is fleeting!)that comes with being self made. Earn your shit and you'll be content!

I always wonder... I listen to this podcast the second time and every time it struck me. "Why are you saying these truths are harsh and dark?" When I listened to it, it was actually optimistic. 1. Humans suck, try to suck less If everyone is bad, it means that you/I are/am not as bad as I could think. There are worse people, there are better people. It gives freedom to act at one's own will, on their own accord. As long as a person have a need to be "good". This can actually help in being calm. In seeing clearly, not to be tied up by anxieties. 2. Pain is inevitable, Suffering is optional I can choose my pain. And when the pain is choosen, you don't suffer. So if suffering can be excluded then there's not so much to worry about. 3. You don't deserve happiness, you don't deserve anything I don't deserve bad stuff either. If I don't deserve suffering, then why bother? It's better to go ahead and keep trying at one's own pace, on one's own rules. Everything I do is just what I do. Not what I deserve or not deserve. 4. Everything you love will one day be lost - this is what makes life meaningful Conclusion for me is simple - if life, if time, if moments I spend are meaningful, that's enough. Nothing should last forever. 5. Everything you believe will one day fail you - This is how you grow It's like science. You test things out, check if they work - try to get better results, rinse and repeat. If there is growth it will never be boring. There's nothing worse than stagnation. So yeah, maybe it's me who have dark visions on life XD, but it works for me so I couldn't care less about it, haha. Thanks to anyone who read this.

I agree with number 4, and that's why I think it's so much better to believe in the law of jante: that you are not special. Because the problem we have nowadays is we think if we did something good, if we believe we're a good person, or we worked hard then we should deserve "happiness" or for great things to happen, only to end up disappointed in the end. it creates a ripple effect in our lives such as envy, bitterness and hate (towards others) and depression.

The first time I heard about your book was when somebody recommended it to me. That somebody was a stupid person (in my opinion - not good of me to think like that), so your book was immediately also stupid. When I saw it in the bookstore, I thought: "I'm never going to buy that stupid book." Now I can really laugh about it.

Being single is pain, being in relationship is pain. Being close to toxic family is pain, being far from toxic family is still pain. Being lazy is pain, being hard work is pain too. Being surrounded by people is pain, being alone antisocial is pain too. Being in distopia is pain, but being in utopia also more painful. Life is suffering in every aspect of things. Choose your pain that you think is worth of the suffering 👊. Everything happens is not your fault, but for some reason your reactions still gonna be your responsibility. You are not a victim. It's your challenge to be accomplished. Don't too obsessed with happiness, more happiness means more pain to pay off. Don't be sad with pain, more pain means more happiness and more meaningful. Life is always gonna be sucks a little bit. Try to enjoy suffering so you could suffer less.

12:00. My therapist said something similar. "Stop shooting yourself with the 2nd arrow." Something 'bad' happens. "Ah, I forgot I needed to do before ." So instead of saying "fuck, I'm such a dumbass" (my default), don't shoot yourself with the 2nd arrow. "I forgot X. I got a lot on my plate, let me see how I can fix this" You get the point. So I have to remind myself when I fuck up, don't start piling on myself...

I love the part about grieving an identity and that everything will fail you eventually. I have felt like I've reached another place in life where I think everything in my coping toolkit is just not working. Reframing that as a known part of growth has made it slightly more bearable. Thanks!

Hey Mark, A good podcast really, but just wanted to say that the thumbnail's misleading and even the title. I felt put off when I actually opened the video as I was expecting just you to be talking to the camera, but then it turned out that it's a podcast with a guest. I would suggest you put your guest's face on the thumbnail too, and make the thumbnail suggest that it's a podcast.

Yeah, I realized that after a certain point in life me and my friends started taking pride in getting lower marks. "Bro you are a topper, you don't enjoy life, look at me I barely passed without studying." Sure, enjoying life is important, but so is doing things that help you maintain that enjoyable life. Failing and repeating a semester will make your life more miserable than it is.

For me my story unraveled in my 20s by joining the military all my life i had been trained and had the story of. I am a warrior. I literally fight for the things i believe in. I also had the story that warriors keep the peace by protecting the innocent. That narrative was shattered to pieces on my deployment to afghanistan for sooo many reasons. I realized that I wasnt defending the innocent. I was defending the war profiteers. I also realized that by killing and fighting in a war i was actually causing more violence. Violence does not beget peace. Its quite the opposite. But ive been told this lie my entire life. And american society is complicit in this lie 24-7. This experience changed my life for the better and now i have a totally different story and identity but i also didnt discard the good warrior ideals i reconciled what it means to be a peaceful warrior. ❤ its why enlightenment just means so much to me. I got out of the military and a couple years later became a middle school social studies teacher.

The reason I resonate with you as a person Mark is that I listened to your audiobook 5 times in the past 3 months and I really had an lightbulb type of moment and said to myself damn. it wasn't the lack of knowledge or my unwillingness to work hard on anything I wanted to pursue it was thinking that I needed to follow anyones "path to success" and I cried realizing that at 23 years old but now I am more happier and less stressed without having the need to people please and be overly nice as I had been in the past so thank you so much for being who you are and making me love myself more with the flaws and narratives I've said to myself in the past. 💯💙🙌🏾

It was a 3 year process to get here. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done and still going. I do need to work on my financial situation though. That last guy got me into a real pickle.
