I love to tinker and have come across many pump designs and I must say asside from some crude castings lately the Saylor Beall I feel is flawless. It is a heavy iron casting with concentric type disc valves, the pressure lubricated model pumps oil through the rods to a needle bering wrist pin design, and although not as efficient as copper or brass the intercoller is heavy iron and not as prone to leaking or damage during installations. Your Quincy does appear to have a superior valve design

Paul, if you noted in the vid the HP wristpin busching failed. Quincy used to use a vane type oil pump thay had problems with some losing prime. so rather than finding out why quincy replaced it with the georotor pump what is on my pump.so we changed many oil pumps in the feild and quincy started useing them on all new pumps. 6 to 8 months later all 2 stage pumps had HP wristpin busching failures so quincy replaced the HP rods w/ needel bearings instead of a busching. like the salor beall

Carlos, the square tube fined is a older model with the vane type oil pump. if the head looks like mine you can get parts if the head has round high pressure covers and acorn valve hold down caps it's a obsolete pump.the pump that i have is not the best Quincy had a problem with the vane type oil pump losing it's prime so they replaced it with the GO rotor all 2 stage comps had HP wrist pin busching failure like mine they corected the prob w/ needle bearings in place of buschings #3 soon

Yes, in California. I Just lost an "ebay" auction for a "Quincy 325" just like yours ( round fins on the intercoller tube, a rotor type oil pump, rebuilt, and painted on a pallet. For several days I watched with zero bids and for a while I thought it had actually gone under the radar and I struck gold. On the last 37 seconds I placed 5 bids and lost to 21 other bidders. I have come to realize that pump is like a classic car, expensive, hard to find, and the only difference it doesn' t break dow

Thanks for the info. Going to try to use a late model bearing assembly on mine, waiting to hear back on prices. Might have to re build my old unit, unfortunately quincy does not sell the individual parts, need the brass bushing, two springs, and four new rotor vanes.

@pvcarmon1 Paul, there was no problem with the vane type oil pump machines thay did not have HP wrist pin failures. I think there were machining isues with the vane pump that caused loss of prime and Quincy to change to the georotor pump rather than solveing the problem. the vane pump was used for at least 15 years with out a problem. Never seen a LP wrist pin isue with either oil pump. After checking again no needle bearing HP rod is available busching only, that sucks

Thanks for the comment! I need to ask you a question first, run the compressor to 100 psig and shut it off after it has stoped and unloads does air escape out the inlet AKA the air filter? Also if possible install a pressure gauge in place of the relief valve normal interstage pressure is around 45 psig when running. Let me know and will go from there

@pvcarmon1 Paul, got the castings cleaned old school style the crank cleaned up good some small amount of pitting do to rust got all OEM replacement parts less the back ordered HP busching. part 3 comming soon. hey man I haven't rebuilt recip pump in over 10 years as now I only work on rotary screw air compressors about 25-200 HP a little out of touch with the new recips

That is probably why that old Quincy design is the only one I have seen used on countless 24/7 oil well pump jack operations and natural gas compressors. Despite the unavailability of over and under size parts for the Saylor, I still perfer it's lower end and intercooler. Back in 1991 they installed a splash lub Saylor Beall in out shop, I know it has ever been serviced, not even an oil change, and to this day it runs fine. I am curious as to when and how it will finally quit.

@pvcarmon1 Not a big fan of the LeRoi pumps. the unloading system kinda sucks the teflon disc the small pin w/oring front cover seat the diaphragm. On to the head getting the valves out of the head can be difficult the fine thred valve hold down requires special tools and a lot of times a torch. LeRoi uses Hoerbiger valves there great valves but you can;t rebuild them do to the stud that is pined and protudes through the valve seat. also the intercooler was pron to cracking or breaking

Both pumps have concentric disc type valves but the quincy's are larger as for the saylor beall I don't know how much of the pump is pressure lubricated. It's been 18 years sence I have worked in the recip feild as now I only work on rotary screw comps P/U parts @ a Quincy dealer saw the latest and greatest 325 the head & intercooler was different looked smaller not as heavy duty same valves though. it's still the bang for the buck if you can afford one last I heard new pump $1.200.00 US

I saw two old Quincy 325 compressor pumps for sale at a compressor salvage yard and although simmilar in size and appearance one has square fins on the intercoller tube, I want to buy one, is there a particular model that is superior to the rest and is this pump model still made? Thanks cant wait for part three.

Wow, part three was awsome, you made that look like child's play. Started getting nervous/ uneasy watching the torch and roller bering race removal. You are lucky the HP wrist pin did not wear through the bushing into the aluminum rod like a senerio we encountered with a "Dresser" pump which called for a $316. replacement (rod only). Question, If the baring carrier/ oil pump assembly has a small octagon cover held in place with like six small bolts, does that mean it has a vane type pump? Thx..

yes I know you're Quincy compressor is a 2 stage unit you can tell because all 2 stage units are odd numbers and all single stage units are even numbers model number that is. The new style pump came out around 1983- 84 and the filter was added to the 2 stage units a couple of years later... It was added to meet a certain spec that nobody else had at the time

what you have is the old vane type oil pump, you can't just replace the vane portion of the pump your have to replace the whole assembly which is known as the bearing carrier the single stage air compressors did not have a oil filter only the 2 stage units had them

I am looking to aquire a good Quincy 325 for my garage, but it has been tough. Is there even a better Quincy design than yours and what am I looking for? Since that Quincy pump is so well designed it's rarely seen in my friends shop. Were you able to find the HP wrist pin needle bering kit and is it also available for the low pressure side. Can't wait to see the rebuild.

The latest Salor Beall pressure lubricated pumps have the same looking gear I saw in your Quincy oil pump tear down video. Is that a superior design verses the the disk type oil pumps that have spring loaded plates riding against the outer housing and is this described design called a "vain type" oil pump? Oh and the Salor Beall has drilled connecting rods oiling needle berings on wrist pins but the valves do look samller too dang bad. Salor Beall also makes a splash lubricated models. That Q

That Quincy you have is the only pump I have ever seen used in 24/7 oil well pump jack installations and natural gas compressors leading me to believe it is the best designed pump ever made. It appears the oil and gas industry chooses to look for and rebuild that pump verses replacing it with a newer model "latest and greatest". After reviewing your tear down videos I was unable to find any flaws in that design. Was that the a "Rotor" type oil pump you disasembeled? Thanks for the feedback,Paul

@pvcarmon1 Paul I still think Quincy makes the best piston type compressor. Why nothing holds up as long and is as rebuildable as the Quincy.Try getting .010 .020 oversized pistons and .010 undersized rod insert bearings for the Saylor. Try to get all the carbon out of the intercooler of the Saylor. Question for you, just for tinkering you shure seem to know quite a bit about air compressors are you in this feild?

How do you feel this quincy 325 pump compairs to the Saylor Beall 705 pump and their pressure lubricated model PL705. My second question is if you feel todays Quincy 325 has worked out all described problems to a factory flawless pump? I have noticed the older model Quincy 325 pumps are exclusively used in the oil and gas industry in pump jack installations perhaps for their unmatched robust design.

n. I am actually thinking about giving up on the "Quincy 325" and rebuilding a "Le Roy Dresser 440" but I am uneasy I will spend hundreds on the kit and will break expensive valve parts during the dissembly. I can assure you my video wouldn' t be nearly as smooth. I am currently fabricating to install a "York 210" ( only AC pump with isolated crank case oil) AC compressor on my truck for a compressed air conversion. I might make a rebuild video after......

I am starting to think the motor or the tank will rust through before that pump fails. I wish I was a 70's designer so I could cost effectively combine the Quincy and Saylor designs for a market that was then willing to pay the numbers and not settle for a China made "Harbor Freight" piece of junk. I enjoyed your video and can' t wait to see part three. I almost bought a salvaged Quincy 325 but but decided not to due to the square fins on the intercoller possibility of a vain type oil pump.

Not many maybe around 5 or 6 but hunderds of model # 5120- 390- 350 . The smaller the pump the lesser the chance for rebuilding do to labor VS replacement costs..Thanks for asking

Yah, mine is the 325 2-stage, do you know when they switched to the carrier assembly/oil pump assembly with the oil filter? Might as well get the best one if I am going to change it out.

@pvcarmon1 Paul, how much did the 325 sell for on ebay?I cant beleve you can't find one in Cale. I think I could find 1 down hear let me know if your intrested. refrigerant compressors don't do well as air compressors why? they have oil carry over problems do to no oil control ring. Inadequate cooling as it was designed to be cooled by the refrigerant and the valves are week in comparison to most air compressors. Have you tryed calling around to air comp dealers in your aera to find 1 ?

My quincy 325 oil pump is different. It has 4 spring loaded rotors instead of the transmission stye georotor pump. Do you knoe if I can swap a complete carrier/pump assembly with the georotor onto my 325 roc 14. Also didn't some come with filters?

@pvcarmon1 Paul, the Saylor Beall pump is noisy a lot of valve clater also the valves are concenthic disc but small. Think about it the valves are the hart of the compressor. the HP valves take a beating this is whare the Quincy pump shines. take the valves out of a 5 HP quincy and a saylor you can put all the valves from the saylor in one pocket in your pants and have room left over you might get 2 quincy valves in 1 pocket. Saylor should have used Hoerbiger valves like LeRoi their stronger

Your Quincy is not the only design prone to HP wrist pin bering failure. The "Le Roi Dresser" model pumps under ten horse power were notorious for this type of failure. They were also equiped with a vain type oil pump and the models under ten horse power did not have drilled connecting rods to deliver pressurized oil to the wrist pin bushing. The "Dresser" pumps I now feel have a flawed oil delivery and vain type oil pump design. Too bad because the pump is truely a percision sculpted art.

I am not that up on the record of change on these units, I know you can still get valves and valve parts. I have a 310 video of a of a obsolete pump as a rule of thumb if it doesn't have a oil pump it's not worth going into the bottom end. Thanks for the sub!

ROTARYCOMPTECH I have a 1964 310-ROC-22 Lincoln air compressor which I think is the exact same thing as a Quincy....Anywho, I really like the way this pump and tank look heavy duty and built to last, and would like to get it working properly...I downloaded the Quincy parts diagram online and recently bought a used 2 HP single phase motor to put on it because that’s the only thing it seemed to be missing....well I got her running and pumping and my oil pressure gauge only goes up to about 10%...I also notice when I pump the pump by hand or motor I can hear compression and it growling as it pumps air followed by a JINGLE OR RATTLE SOUND??? Could this be worn piston and rings? Is this why it takes a bit to build pressure? The oil looks crystal clear and has very minimal rust on the pump....what’s your opinion as far as these symptoms go? And I’ve seen gasket kits online, would I need the valve and head kit, or the major overhaul kit? Any advice is appreciated, and thank you for the awesome videos!
