On quite a few occasions our band was faced with cancelling a gig at short notice due to technical issues at the venue. We always suggested doing an acoustic performance instead, and it ALWAYS ended up being a better gig than we would have thought. It’s so much more intimate playing unplugged, or even semi unplugged, and it loosens your inhibitions to try something new, on the fly. If it works, great. If it doesn’t work, it’s not the end of the world. But yeah played a stripped down set in the right venue with the right audience 99% of the time will be a very positive experience.

Whenever, wherever, however I practice is always off microphone and in a wide cavernous space. I don't falsetto(Anything above F#4) although I fry a bit much after Eb1. If I can't fill the room like a church organ, I give it a day...or two and practice breathing. Cycling and hiking helps tremendously. Now combine the two and see how low you can go!

Two lessons in. I’m “midlife” and have been singing in church since I was 2. I said singing, not headlining 😊. I’ve already found some techniques to employ which has helped tremendously. Will probably remain in the confines of church, but I feel I can go from good to great or great to outstanding. Even the various nuances I’ve added are improving. Really well-laid out program. Thank you. 🥰

Absolutely brilliant and efficient points and clarifications that affect not only singers and other performers, but other creatives and even non-creative careers. Almost every piece of advice here could just as easily apply to playing an instrument, writing, painting, working in a retail or other sales business, or in a call center, etc. I know when I've done karaoke at bars and specifically ask if they have a certain version of a song, usually they have it from that production company (Song Choice in most cases), but not always. I've flubbed a word or two a few times from a hiccup or some distraction, but the thing that has messed it up the most has been when the instrumentation and timing doesn't match. However, I've sung and practiced enough times with my favorite pieces that I tend to know when to rejoin even if the screen's timing is off, or even when it blacks out on some songs that I've done the most. I'm still not practiced enough to consistently do many songs without a screen or practice the same day, but when I was in high school and college choir we went through anywhere from three to eight songs without a sheet anywhere, because we practiced every song over and over between planned concerts to ensure we were ready. Some still weren't ready despite weeks and even a month of planning or more, but most did fine, and some, like myself, even practiced outside of choir for parts that we were having more difficulty with due to changing hormones and stuffed up noses from the winter, etc. It takes a lot of practice and planning contingencies to do any job well, especially a creative career, let alone one with public performances. Great video!

Like you say in your course: Only sing as loud as you can connect.. holding back the breath with consistent almost daily practice is growing my voice. As a baritone I’m singing E4-G4 a lot easier than before..Long train running by The Doobie Brothers is a goal of mine. If I can sing that comfortably with a healthy amount of chest voice mixed in I feel like I would have accomplished a lot from where I started.

I couldn’t agree with you more with the ‘over practise’ Ken. I’ve found the more you use your voice the stronger and thus better it becomes. I remember my first season doing the tourist circuit (Europe) and I was very nervous would I last the full 6 months of 5/6 nights a week and 3 hrs a night. Especially as I had previously just sang most weekends so it was a big jump. Well the first couple of months I found tough, then it started getting a little easier. By the second last month my voice had never been so strong. It was amazing, like a finely tuned instrument. And I knew my voice better than ever before. Imo it led to better shows and performance.

Very good advice. I'm still overcoming physical vocal issues with possible vocal chord spasms and asthma, and I've added a new aspect to relearning to breathe and sustain more by playing my old flute. I really think it's helping and strengthening muscles that are weaker. It forces me to be more intentional breathing. Another variant in environment is air temperature, too. Great tips and things to think about. And when something doesn't quite work out right, let it be a learning experience for the future. God bless.

The beach, especially in winter when not crowded, is a great place. A forest if you have easy access is good. Your house when it's empty. Yes the car too. You have to be creative in figuring out where and when to practice, but if you have the fire in your soul to pursue it, just do it; no excuses. ps... congrats on your son's success.

Pure gold 🥇🏅🥇 Yeah have,to stay calm / Alot,of gigs you might not have monitor and the sound dude is wasted and well,in amateur buisness that will hit you so many times it is stupid/ Just stay calm try to say what you want in between the 1 and second song / You can always try make eye contact and point at the monitor and stick yore finger inthe air /-up up up/ Somifmnothing changes after second song / Just draw yore revolver 😅 Soundcheck is one thing but what is happen in between God only knows😅 It is hard to not oversing if the monitor is dead but try do nothing more than usual / easy to say I know / But you learn more from one liveshow than I guess 100 practises with the band in a safe rehearsing space/ Guitars /bass/ drums /vokal,totally changes all colors youmare, use to hear/ Be prepared for anything to happen🤔 But inthe end it is only rock n roll / So do your best out of the situations you been trowing in/ Alot of sound men are silly good to / They kno exactly what the place need and when you get better gigs/ The sound men usuallymwork permanent on the place / And knows every details ofthe place,/ Never give,up / And never try to hard / give it 100 %,not 110/ You are nothing better than you are on practise hours so dont go,for the high notes you, can't do in rehearsal s live /😎

I would love to hear an isolated vocal review of the late John Wetton (ASIA, King Crimson) and the late Greg Lake (ELP, King Crimson). Both had similar vocal tones but never worked together. In the 80’s, everyone was high on high vocal singers, but a lower bass voice from Wetton just soared over some of them, in my opinion.

Really good stuff… practicing consistently under different conditions when possible… not “over practicing” though.. For a long time I’ve looked forward to building stamina and learning what I need to do to sing pieces under challenging conditions, including illness. I’ve also learned not to obsess over particularly challenging sections of pieces I’m working on. Amazing how much the voice can grow over time.

One of those moments that you'll retell because it shaped your life and continues to; it's a church built in 1870, shaped that way because microphones didn't exist back then. The whole reason we are here, physically, is because everything is made to hear you speak. But they canceled church that day when the microphone broke. Long before I could explain the apse resonance from art history class, I thought there's something off about this.

Hi, I'm from Germany and I'm a big fan of your reaction videos. I am a DJ and presenter myself and have a very deep voice. Now I want to be able to sing something in my old days. Unfortunately, according to an investigation, I have vocal lip edema. As soon as I try to speak or sing a little higher, there is a break or my voice is gone. Do you have any tips on how to start exercising? Because before I book a course I want to know whether it makes sense at all.

Hey Ken. Love your take on 80's vs 90's singers. I'm sure you caught Rick Beato's latest Grunge celebration and wanted your opining. Not to be a bummer cause grunge and rap are big out there, but my theory is they took music down a dark path. It's scary to me that I can't think of one hit love song coming out of grunge. It was the decade that took music ethos from hard drinking to hard drugging, and I wish people would be more honest about it. Rick's great but I don't get this blindspot, we're older, and I think coming to terms with it as a culture would be healing.
