Excellent and helpful tips, Ken! I found my why then finally got over the dislike of my voice this thanksgiving when I got your course. As a musician for over 10 years the fear and insecurity really got to me. Now I’m nowhere near a great singer but after a few weeks my vocals are so much smoother and fuller while singing. It’s so incredible for the first time, my throat doesn’t burn after singing. Your technique is gold! There’s a richer tone to my vocals. I’m really struggling with diaphragmatic support, but I’m not giving up. The progress yielded in just a few weeks has got my heart soaring. Thank you so much for your generosity and encouraging spirit.

Ken, I sing because it releases my stress. When I truly let go and sing peace and joy rise up from my soul and pool inside my mind. The better I get at it the more soothed I feel about this chaotic world. It's funny how we can be so hypercritical of our singing. How it ruins the joy we have in doing it. Others have told me (especially in church) how wonderful my voice is. So why do I get so self-conscious and then try and push all that joy and peace I feel when I sing back inside? It's sad how we so often try and subdue the things that are good and pure. I pray everyone who comes here to listen to Ken's wonderful lessons will just allow themselves to let go completely. Learn to sing with all your heart! It will make your soul and mind a happier place.

I started singing because of your videos. You are pure gold! I have sometimes problems to sit in the mix or when singing faithfully from journey to sound clear on the upper notes, its a bit shrill, but i wont give up to get really good because i love to singing. Atleast my register is very similar to yours, i can get really high as a male, so it gives me faith i can reach the same. Thx you for all your good work and positivity Ken. Much love from Germany.

At 57 i have been working your program for a few months singing in church( God uses the willing right!!) and i have been patient with myself and the songs i pick and slowly watch my voice grow with each song I challenge it with. Thank you for sound advice. Ps. Now please more videos on this glottal compression thing hahaha

I remember my first songs that I learned were Glen Campbell songs and Perry Como because that is the record albums that Mom had. From there, I expanded out to Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Elton John, The Eagles, and Billy Joel. It was great! I am 59 and am still working at singing and working at getting better at it.

Yeah your course changed my life. Just saying. But I recently did go through a struggle where I was just so critical of myself, even tho good stuff was happening, I was always disappointed in myself and of course it wasn't fun any more. Glad I got through that! I had a break through where I realized something new was happening - being able to use my diaphragm well enough to push the sound up into the space in the back of my mouth and get great resonance. I had thought I was using my diaphragm before but it was only the beginning... So much to it! Don't give up! But yeah, I was making it all too technical and not getting into the song as much either so I lost that aspect. The best part is losing myself in the song.

Thanks for the tips! Encouraging as always. I have always known from a younger age that I wanted to sing or do something else with music, but I was unsure about doing it until I played at my very first open mic night in 2003. I haven't done any open mics since the pandemic began, but I still love to sing whether I decide to make a living doing it or not. My reasons for singing are because I love it and because I feel like a different person when I sing.

👍👍👍 love it man. Ur vids are so exciting and hilarious to watch. I like, u have good humor. These 7 steps came naturally to me. That's how I started singing, I figured out why I wanna sing. I practice almost every-day dosent matter where I am, I sing to my self. Home, work, or out somewhere. I always have melodies stuck in my head lol. I record my self, then play it back. I sing to my wife and close friends. I stay away from negative people, just like u said they don't have any goals or success so they try to Bash everyone else that have dreams, It's true they get an orgasm of some kind out of it lol. I have a home studio I spend time in there almost every night. Music is my life, been a musician all my life, (originally a drummer). My mom side of the family have long history of musicans, so that's where I'm probably getting it from. Anyways Ken keep uploading vids GodBless

Great tips. I'm a long time rock guitarist (30 + years) and trying to learn to sing properly because I want to be a better song writer. Please don't laugh, but I really love Taylor Swift's music, and I couldn't but help think of her when you were talking about not stopping because people think you suck. She is surely an example of someone who has seriously improved her voice and brought it up to the level of her great song writing. I think the tip you mentioned of recording yourself is a REALLY good one. As a guitarist I do this all the time - the tape doesn't lie!!

About experimenting... I used to gig with a very talented guitarist/vocalist and a warm-up for sound-check fun was to task each other to cover a song in the style of another, say 'My Way' via Michael McDonald, 'I Keep Forgetting' via Frank Sinatra, etc. It gets really fun LOL!

How I experiment with my voice… KZbin has an almost limitless supply of karaoke tracks. Surely with any popular song you will be able to find a karaoke version. I will experiment with singing female vocalists. (I’m a man. You probably already assumed that.) If I’m not able to sing something well, I play a game called, “Sing it like Bowie”, or “sing it like Peter Murphy” if you prefer. This helps me to relax and usually gives me a case of the giggles. My personal “why” is pretty simple. Singing brings me joy. At least once a month I sing at my church; sometimes solo, other times in a group. It’s fun for me to practice and polish a vocal and then sing for people, but I don’t require an audience. Singing alone in the car brings me just as much if not more joy than singing in front of others.

I agree on finding a proper vocal coach, it has to click. I don´t agree on that a vocal coach makes you sound like him. He should not, in my opinion a vocal coach should help the student find his own voice and feel comfortable with it. That´s what even Fischer-Dieskau did in his Masterclass. And train your ear, if you don´t hear you´r sharp or flat, you will hit notes only accidentally. And the most important thing, much more important then a perfect pitch is an emotional connection to the song. Seriously don´t sing it if you can´t feel it. If you don´t mean what you sing, if you don´t understand what the orginal artist wanted to transport and can´t get into it, then why sing at all? It´s all about emotion and that´s why i sing, i have no other choise, i would implode emotionally if i would not sing to me it´s not a hobby it´s a necessity 🤷♂

Great advise as always. I read some time ago that potato chips works wonders on vocals. The salt allegedly dries the phlegm & the grease lubes the throat. No joke. This is supposed to make for a “crispier” vocal take when recording. Is there any truth to this?

I echo the sentiments of MANY here. Having to RE invent myself for the 21st, I KNEW singing was gonna be manditory to keep giggin. Without your R brained "magic" used to "reach" us ,I woulda lost faith early on, assuming the techniques were just not attainable for the naturally UN gifted. Yeah, the tips are great BUT, it makes all the difference in the world HOW they're presented and by WHOM...OH BTW, I know ya get fifty-eleven requests every day BUT, I requested an analysis/critque of the 76 hit "Shannon" , by Henry Gross, mainly for the all falsetto chorus. Making it part of the "isolated series" would tickle me abolutely to DEATH, but mainly just wanna hear YOUR play by play, any way it can be done....Thanks!
