Fotga sent out one of their A50 monitors for me to test and see just how well it performs and I have to say, it does extremely well. The FOTFA A50 series combines the use of tactile buttons with a capacitive touch screen to get the best of both worlds in terms of monitor navigation. They've also taken design consideration with two NPF Battery slots as well as much better HDMI port locations, in my opinion. I love that there are 4 different models depending on your needs, the models simply add more functions like touch screen, LUTS, or SDI. If you don't need any of that, the standard model still has all the same physical features like the dual NPF slots. Simply put, if you don't want to pay SMALLHD prices or don't need a recording monitor, this is easily one of the best value monitors out there from a price to performance perspective!

I’m blown away how affordable these monitors are getting. I got the A7 some time ago and love it. I hope these manufacturers will soon produce models that support SSD recording. Great review as always.

Hey hey again Supperconductor! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I am too! I remember the days where I would say "man it would be nice to have a larger monitor on set but I just can't afford a sharp one right now". I am waiting for that day too! Especially if they take the publically available SDK of Blackmagic Raw and try to encourage manufacturers to allow more RAW output via HDMI. If not RAW, then perhaps another for of uncompressed codec, I think cineform is open source? We shall see! Thanks again for stopping by and I’ll see you in the next one!

Amazing style, the TLDR format is something I sincerely enjoy! Would you still buy one today? There is a brand new A50TL for sale on my local classifieds for $150, and as you mentioned in your 5 things to consider I would call it both a luxury and an investment (maybe going for a brighter one might be a good idea). Out of all the stuff sold locally it seems pretty amazing, but maybe in 2 years some new “frugal gem” was discovered? :D P.S.: 1 dislike in 2 years? Damn, even the viewers are nice here, haha

Hey hey CRANE REVIEWS! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I've somewhat been out of the monitor loop for awhile since this video. The last video monitor I reviewed was by CVW and it had a wireless transmitter built in. But when it came to the panel itself, it was more or less the same as this generation of monitors. Nothing amazing, usable for most needs. This Fotga monitor is still one of my favorites because it does not have a glossy screen making it better outdoors than its competitors. They also did release a firmware that allowed the Fotga to go up to 700 nits of brightness instead of 500 (typical). If you are planning to be outdoors a whole bunch, referring to my 5 steps, then you'll probably want to invest in a monitor that can hit 1000 nits or higher. It will make all the difference for your outdoor shooting experience and help things move along. If you're not outdoors a lot and just inside your home for a dedicated youtube setup where your camera is never going to move and nor is the monitor. Then I'd suggest to use that old computer LCD screen you may have sitting around or a TV that is getting no love in another room haha. But if you're moving about, then...at this current moment, the Fotga A50 (non touch screen version) is a good deal. Think it might be a little cheaper than the TL at the moment. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

I have one in my hands right now and... I'm torn. It's still a good monitor in 2021, but, the interface is barely tolerable, and the M6 based "x-mount" is very frustrating, as it makes the monitor unusable with most 1/4-20 hardware. You can get adapters and make it all work, but, is it worth it? I'm revisiting this video now to try to figure out LUT importing, and it does not seem that my monitor wants to let me do that. The firmware page on their website is also down, suggesting Fotga is giving up on their monitors. If you have one or find a great deal, it's still a good monitor, but I would absolutely avoid paying full price for one of these.

Hi Jason, as always, I usually turn to you for reviews of products. I wanted to make a suggestion: Your affiliate links only work for Amazon.com not any of the European amazon sites, I have noticed on other KZbinrs their affiliate links change depending on where you click from. Unfortunately, the Kastar batteries don't exist on the European market, probably packaged under a different name (UK I found: Fomito make a battery with 2 USB ports, micro and standard) Lastly (sorry lots to unpack): How do you feel about the Fotga now in 2020? Worth it or would you consider the Atomos Ninja V given you're going to the Sony a7siii?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 4 жыл бұрын
Hey hey again Neil! I've actually only recently, finally, been able to supply European Affiliate links (UK and DE). So in my more recent videos and popular videos I have links for that now. Batteries seem to be an interesting subject in terms of whats available in the European market. I'm not too familiar with all the commerce laws there so I can't say for sure what would be the most equivalent versions there. But you're right, its most likely just rebranded as a different brand name. Haha no worries. the Fotga is still my monitor of choice on a budget, they have a newer firmware that allows for DCI-P3 Color and allow the LED backlight to reach up to 700nits instead of the original 500nits (only on upper models, not on base models I believe). But the Ninja V is/has been on my radar depending if I move into the format of either filming in Pro-res for my narrative films or porentially using ProRes Raw (Once they make it behave more like RAW with ISO and WB changes). However I am also waiting to see if BlackMagic Design updates their recorders to allow BRAW to happen over HDMI for the A7Siii. If they do, I will most likely out for BRAW because of file sizes and perceivable quality retained. This is also because I plan to move to Davinci Resolve for feature film work instead of FCPX like I have been using. Hope this helps!

I have had the A50 now for several months and while the unit has potential, it lacks the ability to "Mirror" the screen when facing the subject being captured. The other issue I have with FOTGA and its overall "package" as a "professional" option for filmmakers on a budget, is FOTGA's less than professional "support". I have gone to the support page for available Firmware updates, but there is no clear access to the information on the process for doing so. Additionally, for any of the monitors offered by FOTGA, there is no page by page listing of the entire feature set for each monitor. And that makes these monitors for myself not one that I would strongly recommend at this point. It was not until I was on a shoot and found out that something as simple as "Screen Mirroring" was not available, making me look less than professional in front of the client.

I will use it with my canon sl2 and I think I will not use 3d lut I guess. Maybe I will use. Not sure anyway. So do I need to lut model or only with touch screen? Thank you so much. Hey hey Begench! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking some questions! Yes, the firmware is out, but I have not upgraded my monitor just yet. Personally I haven't use LUTS at all on the films I work on, there may be a day I will, but not for awhile as I like to just light the movie without need to adjust colors in post. If you know you just want a monitor so that you have a larger screen to work with, then I would just get the Touch screen version and save some money. Hope this helps! @TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 4 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Clarence, Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Hmm… the only other thing I can think of is try not having any numeral numbers in the name, maybe also try having the name like “AAAA.cube” where the four letters in the beginning are all caps. Lastly, try having the flash drive already inserted into the monitor before turning it on. … ok one last thing to note, make sure the LUT is just on the drives main root location (meaning when you plug it in and you open it to see whats stored) and that its not located in a folder somewhere in the Root location Hope this helps! If not, I would email Fotga to see what could be wrong. Thanks again for stopping by and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Israr! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I honestly cannot make a suggestion because I haven't used both of those models. If video image is most important and HDR, the Atomos is probably the better bet. The only thing you will be missing is an HDMI output if you need to go to a wireless module or a 2nd monitor for focus puller. The Fotga has an HDMI Output, but I don't really believe their monitor is HDR capable. Hope some of these thoughts help. Thanks again for stopping by! Greetings Jude! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The current models at its current firmware has a brightness of 510, the new firmware 2.0 thats coming in the near future is going to allow you to raise it up to 700nit. I've never personally used a 1000 or 2000 nit monitor outdoors so I can't say if the bump to 700nit would be sufficient. For me I used this outdoors with the sunhood and felt the 500nit was bright enough for me to monitor and pull focus. (Example of the short film here from another review: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoaQZX-PqJqFb9k ) But don't get me wrong, I'm sure once I used a 1000-2000nit monitor outdoors, it will change my preference haha. When I matched the colors I used the GH5's internal SMPTE broadcast color bars test and then adjusted the Fotga to match as close to the GH5 LCD as possible. Of course if the screen is facing directly at the sun without your body blocking the sun, it would be a little difficult to see. There is a function in the menu somewhere that says something like H-flip and V-flip. If you just turn the monitor horizontally around (pan), you should just need to activate H flip. If you have one of those where the monitor flips vertically around (tilt) you'd need to activate V-flip and H-flip.

Haha hey hey Adam! So sorry that I got these monitors in for review lol. I cannot wait for the day that these monitor companies take a hard look at the publicly available SDK for Black Magic Raw and integrate it for recording via SD card or even a USB port... or maybe even some sort of open source uncompressed codec... I think Cineform is open source? idk, but seriously, I cannot wait for that day where these monitors become recorders at 1/3 of the price! Thanks again for stopping by and I"ll see you in the next one!

I hope to finally start filming my masterclass on everything I went through to make that movie happen from concept - pre - production - and post. Hope to get that started and release next year sometime, or earlier if I can! Thanks again for your support! I'll see you in the next one!

Hey hey PJ! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that it was flaking on you, color and contrast aside, I wonder if you had a lemon? Did Fotga ever replace it or the seller provided a refund at the very least? As for the color and contrast, I adjusted the colors in the custom user settings to match up to the SMPTE from my GH5, but you are right that the contrast is the one part that I couldn't get to match so the shots through the monitor will have more. But I don't necessarily think its a bad thing as I usually will add some contrast back depending on a scene. Definitely not a true reference monitor for the price, but I don't think thats necessarily a disadvantage since I am familiar enough with how my GH5 behaves and checking the waveforms if I have to so I know what I'm getting when I go into post. In the end it just depends on how a filmmaker prefers to work or what ways the combat equipment limitations. For me the long reason I didn't like budget monitors back in early 2010s was because they were all 480p and very blurry. They were fine for composition but not for critical focus, I started paying more attention the day the monitors finally went to 1080p and I love how I can get a cheap one now for composition and focus. The colors are close enough for my eyes to see what colors I am introducing into the scene, the rest of it is based on how I light it and checking the false color for exposure. Not the perfect monitor, but for the budget cost and getting me the post production results I want, I can't argue as I use the money saves for other production costs that's not gear related. Thanks again for stopping by and I’ll see you in the next one!

No waveforms. Deal breaker.

Hey hey again The Filmmaking Channel! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! For me I prefer the use of False Color to check exposure across the entire picture. I'll use a waveform if I have no other option, but for me False Color gives me a very quick representation how the actor is lit versus the background around them. I could be missing something, is there a specific reason you prefer waveform over false color? I know when I was re-lighting a green screen studio that I used the waveform to gauge if I had the cyc evenly lit, in that situation I feel the waveform is easier to use. Thanks again for stopping by and I’ll see you in the next one!
