In this video, 4th degree black belt Roy Dean discusses his experience training with John Danaher and shares five takeaways from the training. He mentions that the technical palette was diverse, with classes on various techniques such as omo plata, guillotine, leg locks, and inversions. He also praises Danaher's succinct in-person instruction style and emphasizes the importance of stand-up grappling in training. The speaker compares his own teacher, Roy Harris, to Danaher, highlighting their similarities in being great minds in the art of jiu-jitsu. He also talks about the class structure at Danaher's academy, which includes no warm-up, long series of technical threads, and emphasis on positional escapes and stand-up grappling. Professor Dean concludes by discussing the fun and invigorating experience of training intensively and encourages others to have similar training adventures.

You have to understand this about John Danaher....he's not married, no girlfriend, no kids, doesn't own an academy, no responsibilities other than jiu jitsu, is insanely intelligent, a workaholic and truly obsessed with jiu jitsu. In addition, he's been teaching for almost 30 years. He literally studies it 16 hours a day and has been doing this schedule forever. There is no one on the planet that is even remotely on his level of coaching. He's a once in a lifetime coach that is contributing to no gi like no one else. My utmost respect.

I agree with you but John danaher has elected to become a jiujitsu shaman/sage/priest and he is willing to take a vow from this world to be who he is which is an amazing commitment

@@anecetohernandez137 Oh, absolutely! He's more committed to increasing the level of JJ than anyone. If you were put in a time capsule in 2010 and watched some of the ADCC Trials this year, JJ would be almost unrecognizable to you. 10 years from now, the highest level grappling today will seem basic. Like I said, he's a once in a lifetime type of JJ coach.

This might be the best video. From me (a new black belt) to see a fourth degree be excited to learn like a white belt, seek knowledge and also encourage students to do so is refreshing. "Take your beating with a little bit of dignity" 👏

There are some instructionals I can play in the background and multi-task. With John's instructionals, I find myself having to actively take notes. He has such a cerebral/intellectual approach to explaining things. It might seem daunting at first, but over time I grew to love it. You're so on point about how he explains the "why". Thanks Roy!

Professor Dean, thank you for your candid narrative of your experience training with Professor Harris and Professor Danaher. I agree that Danaher is a new- wave Jujitsu instructor who specializes in the Jujitsu mechanics! In sort, as you coined the phrase “ Jujitsu mechanics specialist.” I see Danaher revers engineering the training incrementally. You are wise to continue training and adding to your knowledge of Jujitsu! Thank for sharing! Coach AL

Awesome video. Some of my favorite training memories over the years are taking trips to places for training. B-Team. Fifty/50. Paragon. Etc. It's super inspiring to train with great folks in other places, and it's super eye opening. Great to feel different people, learn different styles, get exposed to different cultures, and meet new friends. Glad you had a great time!

BJJ is all about attendance. It gets easier when you show up more often. It's easy to see the theory, but it's hard to apply it when rolling. I like masters who shows you the set ups when rolling, like this you can build your rolling IQ easy.
