I got my dads old leather jacket, shits from the 80s and extremly dry. I have two products; "Tarrago mink oil" and a beeswax conditioner, could i apply the mink oil and then the wax? both the products are firm and not liquid if thats important

This was all really info but a couple things I would correct, coming from a guy that works at a boot store, is that mink oil is the very best for breaking in leather. It softens it up the most, and that's generally what it's best at. A lot of people say that long term mink oil use can actually cause leather to harden up and get stiff over time so maybe reconsider having it as your go-to leather conditioner. Another thing is brushing, like you said brushing is really good, and most casual leather wearers should probably be conditioning closer to 6 months if they just brush their stuff more. Similar to your hair, brushing redistributes the oils and there's really no drawbacks to doing it so you can do it as much as you want and it'll be fine, except on suede and roughouts. Also for suedes and roughouts, they can be cleaned with soapy water to get out deep stains. I puked all over my roughout boots on my 21st and I used saphier suede renovator and it worked amazing, but you should also condition after with their suede conditioner spray. Anyways that's all enjoy your boots

One more thing I'd like to add on: I couldn't fathom conditioning my Chromexcel or hot stuffed leathers right outta the box. If I see decent pull up, I take them as being "good to go" for awhile, especially with my dressier "city boots". I do tend to condition my work boots semi regularly, but I work in the elements in a state with a lot of fluctuation between hot and cold, mixed with wet and dry; plus a ton of salt in the winter months (not to mention the literal great salt lake not being too far off from where I live). I generally brush my work boots down weekly unless needed sooner, but I tend to err on the side of conditioning / protecting about every 3 months with some good ol' Obenauf's.

good video. i have been taking care of my leather stuff for about 40 yrs. when mink oiling a pair of boots or shoes it is best to leave them near a radiator, or some other low heat source. this is for the first coat. apply a second coat and let it dry naturally. even in heavy new york rain my feet stay dry.

Hey, Stellar video! I love leather so I'm glad someone finally had a video on leather care :). I have some extra tips to share. For any leather conditioners, wipe down any excess conditioner after you're done conditioning and make sure to buff the leather with a brush to give it that extra shine! For mink oil, if you have any shoes or boots with leather soles, DO NOT put mink oil on the bottom and not too much on the welt, maybe once our twice a year. It softens them out which is not what you want for hard surfaces like the sidewalk. Finally, always optional as this is just a preference, I find using grease /dubbin is better than wax at waterproofing shoes or boots. Similarly, to mink oil, don't put too much grease on the soles, BUT put as much as you want on the upper. Its better in layers. Don't use it on shell cordovan, just use conditioner or other specialed products for shell. Good dubbin brands are Ko-Cho-Line, Sno-Seal, and Huberds. For good conditioners Saphir is usually the best, but the other I like is Venetian Shoe Cream. I know its a long comment, I hope I've been able to help and again great video!

What would you reccomend using to wipe off the excess? Sponge, microfiber cloth, paper towels, anything specific?
@yellowyunicorn
@yellowyunicorn 7 ай бұрын
@@ShadeDemon2141 From what I've read and seen, would recommend microfiber clothes. Sometimes if Im feeling a bit lazy, I will dab my shoes with the Saphir renavator and then brush it down with a horse hair brush. Most of the times, I start off with massaging the conditioner with a microfiber cloth, wait a couple mins, brush for like 5-10mins, apply Pommadier cream with microfiber, wait, brush again like a madman, and then finally apply a layer of saphir wax, wait and brush (I would do this for my leather boots that I havent cleaned in years) Personally I feel like the extra shine comes with calf leather particularly but with horse leather, I find it having matted shine. But regardless, this seems to at least clean up and cover random scratches and scuffs I cause with my boots :)

great thorough information, thanks. personally I think "leather" is umbrella name used for many different kinds of preserved hide with many different characteristics, finished chrome tanned leather used for motorcycle jacket and boots probably benefit almost nothing from leather care since they are waterproofed so anything you add may just stay on top, other leather like naked leather even when chrometanned may benefit from conditioning since it has open pores, probably if you wash the item totally submerged it in warm water or get caught in prolonged rainstorm then you may need to recondition them, then there is wax stuffed leather it has open pores but it has so much wax and oil in it you don't need to do anything other than buffing for a decade or more and then vegetable tanned leather especially natural color without any protective layer they need conditioner to stay supple because they have open pores and usually dry out easily, but even this natural vegtanned leather overtime they will accumulate previous treatments and can go longer without being re conditioned

Depends very, very heavily on how its finished, a super heavily coated leather like that Doc Martens uses doesn't benefit, however a lightly pigmented leather like that you may find on a mid range dress shoe would benefit greatly from conditioning.

I work at a wash, boots get wet everyday, I’m always drying them with a cloth and putting conditioner on them every other day. Compared to my first pair of leather with gouges and all, this has brought me miles ahead of the game. Beforehand, i tried once a week, simply wasn’t enough. I also took up spit shining them and it ended up protecting against 90% pure chemicals that happen to cause discoloring.

great video... people forget about this stuff... I call it maintenance... If you take care of your stuff, or maintain it... It will take care of you. I like Apple Brand leather conditioner.. it's good for colored leathers... It doesn't change the color of the item... But test it to be safe. I used to work high end retail.. and this was the brand they have advised... No complaints from me about the product...

saphir makes a product called super invulner. apply it after conditioning boots and waterproofs the leather for several months. for sneakers you can get the nano spray (it last alot longer. that’s why you wanna add it on sneakers and not leather products). all saphir products are A+ especially if you’re investing on boots such as guidis, ccp, etc.

Great video. Can I get your advice? I just bought the beautiful ELC A-2 veg-tanned horsehide with pure aniline. I know calf skin leather shoes should be cared when they are purchased and also regularly (that’s what I do all the time). However, that horsehide leather jacket has different recommendation when I research. People said never put anything when it is brand new. Just wear it for few decades and put Pecard leather dressing when it looks dried. Is it true? I’m just afraid if I ruin my jacket when I don’t put anything now. (Of course I keep it dry all the time. Never wear in rainy days and it is stored in dark and dry area)

I love wearing black combat esque boots I only realized a week ago that leather needs to be conditioned I've Never been told that it's something I have to do which is kind of frustrating cause both of my parents know how to do that. Just don't use those kind of shoes all the time (dad learned for job bc he had leather shoes for work bf dress code changed at his old job apparenrly). So they probably forgot to mention it to me. And even my younger sister knew before I did. Though she really likes fashion general so that not surprising. The only indication I had that this was something I would be required to do was on a leather bag I got in new zealand (backriver bags i reccomend their stuff) where ethe care said somrhting about seseme oil? It was right bf covid so i gotta ask them
