Many theists believe and tell several lies about atheists, sometimes out of ignorance, and sometimes out of malice. Five of the lies I tackle here are that atheists lose faith because of hardship, atheists who deconverted were never true believers, atheists have never studied X religion, there are no atheists in foxholes, and that atheists secretly believe in god. Religious media loves to propagate all these falsehoods (I'm looking at you Pureflix's God's Not Dead and CBS' God Friended Me). For those believers who will listen, it only takes 10 minutes with a calm, friendly atheist to explain why all of these statements are false. That's why I'm here.
These false statements confuse a lot of people about why atheists don't believe in god, whether atheists can be good people, or if atheists are educated about religion. To further the conversation, we've got to put these to bed.
This video contains 100% therapeutic grade skepticism.*

Also if anything the idea that you can just ask forgiveness no matter what you do and have it be the same as if you did nothing does not incentivise true efforts to try when it gets really hard and you're demotivated. The only loophole is you gotta not die in between committing the sin and asking forgiveness/being truly sorry after. Or maybe you can. Christians disagree on this.

Natalie Euley - The story of the Fall is a parable, with many layers of meaning. And that one is not really the point. We all have to go through that phase, in order to return later as mature persons. And we usually get in trouble in the meantime. That is why we are offered forgiveness and grace. God knew that would happen when he gave us the stupid "command." It was part of the plan, which would eventually lead to the defeat of evil and saving those who would choose to love.

Or the feeling they give you that you actively abandonded God and the church and are a heathen. No mom, I just can't believe in God anymore. It feels like I've been watching a magician performing an act all my life and like I recently found out it's all just a trick. You can't blame someone for not believing in something they perceive as a trick. You can't expect people to come back to faith once they've seen how it works. I didn't actively wake up one morning and think: 'Ha, I believe God exists, but I'ma turn my back on him! Let's see how he and my parents will like that!' No, to many people losing faith is just something that happens to them when they start to actually think about things and when they start to see the logic behind not believing in a God. As a finnish, i find this concept of "war" between theists and atheists weird. I grew up with atheist father and lutheran mother, father would drink and be verbally abusive towards my mother but very little towards me. Despite being atheist i had to defend my mother in the arguments which kind of made me grow up in the middle. Sidenote: finnish lutheran religious is really low-key sect of christianity in comparison with other christian groups, afaik. Converting other people, in any way, is highly frowned upon. You have your religion and you keep it to yourself. Skip 20+ years forward and i'm still in great relationship with my mother and she knows i'm not religious. She and her new husband say prair before eating (which is *extremely* rare in Finland, even in religious families), i stop what i'm doing and allow them their prair in peace. No big deal. 5 years ago, we went as a family to across-drive in motor home to europe, two atheist brothers, mother and father-in-law. More than a month crammed up in a small space and we had no arguments. We all knew where stood and we all respected that. Neither side tried convert or prod about the issue and it was one amazing trip. We enjoyed the trip as humans and not as humans with differing beliefs. All in all, finnish are 'religious' but more in the traditional way. My siblings do religious things like attend church in special hollidays and such but otherwise they behave like atheists. For them, evolution is a fact as it was taught in secular government paid school and believing in the "new earth" theory is just absurd and alien. I know 5 seriously religious people (what US person could call religious) and all of them are in my family. So the future is looking very atheist in Finland. Yey :) Or low-key lutheran 'mind your own business' style with which im fine with. Who am i to judge as long as no one is getting hurt!

The statement "if you quit a religion, you were not really religious" hides a terrible meaning. The word "really", can be justifiably replaced with "fanatically". Only fanatics and zealots do not change their ways no matter the arguments, no matter the proof, no matter the hypocrisy or corruption that plagues the group that they fanatically favor, no matter what. Religious fanatics will never change their ideas because subconsciously they are fearful that their very lives will collapse or be meaningless if their ideas are false. If someone is vulnerable, it's not atheists, it is them. Atheists will not kill you because God will not smite them, for man has an inherent repulsion towards murder. Secondly, atheists are not immoral. We derive our morals from simple ideas, philosophy, experience.

I realized recently that I have been an atheist my entire life though I called myself agnostic, I think because I was trying to be diplomatic. I'm 51 now. Even when I was little, I couldn't figure out why people wouldn't take responsibility for their own behavior and actions. Religion just confused me. My own father screamed at me when I told him about my atheism about 10 years ago. He declared, "if you know who God is then you believe in him! Ha!" And then walked away. Listening is a skill that a lot of people just don't have.

I was raised in a rural Southern Pentecostal church. When I was 9, I saved up my money to buy a very nice (Drake's) Bible and I started reading it, front to back. I immediately started having questions about passages that had never been brought up in Sermons or Sunday School. My questions disturbed (and annoyed) my Sunday School Teacher, who wanted to know where I had heard such things. When I told him I read it in the Bible (and showed him the scriptures), he told me the Bible was too confusing for young minds and that's why we had the Preacher to read and interpret it for us. He sent me to the Preacher, supposedly to answer my questions, but he just reiterated that I was too young to read and understand the Bible myself. When it became clear that I wasn't going to stop reading it, he asked my Dad to stop bringing me to church, because I was "confusing the other children". I never went back to that church, but my parents and brothers continued going there for many years. By the time I finished reading the entire Bible, I had become firmly Agnostic and had also established one of the primary principles of my life: Anything that cannot be questioned is immediately suspect.

They most likely weren't a true Christian. The standards for being a Christian are pretty high in the New Testament. The majority of people who turn away from Christianity weren't fervent believers. To believe you have to put God at the center of your life and commit your life to him. I doubt anyone here did that. They probably grew up with a Christian family and believed in God because they were told to and never thought about their faith that much and then said this is stupid I'm out without really experiencing what it is to be a Christian. Jesus said that if you don't put him before your own family then you're not worthy of him. The majority of the people at the church I grew up definitely did not do this. I found a small church as I grew older that did or least it appeared as though they did. As a Christian, Jesus has to be the center of your life. So yes, they were not true Christians.

So, if being gay is being yourself, is somebody who is bisexual not themselves, then? What if somebody is attracted to young children? Is that being themselves? Does feeling like you are able to fly and stop bullets with your hand suddenly mean that you are able to fly and stop bullets with your hand? You also stated that the Bible says it is wrong to be yourself. Of course it is - the nature of humanity is to do wrong - just look at the world around you. It is only through God that we see good come into this world. Any 'good' that we do on our own is compared to used toilet paper in its worth. Make sure you've at least read the entire Bible before you go making accusations that aren't founded in reality.

In order to gain power in society you need to manipulate people to value something intangible, then you can exploit them with it to get them to do things for you. Getting other people to do things for you is what power really is. First you have to prime the mind to accept belief, one way is to claim that everybody has a belief no matter what, this is a lie but it drives a lot of people to the idea that they have to pick one! Money is power - If that is true why can't i bribe some religious people? Religion is power - If that is true why can i bribe some religious people? The thing that connects all these things together is as simple as value! The idea that you have to pick an idea is what creates value when you pick it, once you value something you've shown the world your weakness and they'll exploit it for their own gain!

I became an Athiest at 14 when my school hired a new Religious Studies teacher. My previous teacher had been a Christian who taught religious studies as "This is what the people who are correct believe, and this is what the people who are incorrect believe". This new teacher was, I believe, agnostic (or possibly an athiest, I never actually asked him what his beliefs were). He taught about each religion with objectivity, merely teaching the facts about each relgion's beliefs with no bais. For the first time I was learning stuff about my faith through a clear lense and began to pick holes in the religious teachings for myself (please note that any time I approached the teacher with my doubts he challenged me to consider every aspect of my doubt to see if it truly was something that I should be doubting). After several months of looking at my faith objectively I realised that it made no sense to me and began looking to other areas of thought, namely the sciences. I found that science had a way of explaining things that not only made sense to me, but were backed up with physical evidence. For me science succeeded where religion had failed. That's not to say the two are mutually exclusive, and people believe in both, but for me religion had too many holes in it, and at times seemed to be grasping at straws.

"You don't get it because you haven't read the Bible"? And what would he say to a Muslim who said he doesn't get Islam because he hasn't read the Quran? I had a similar encounter with Jehovah's Witnesses. Upon telling them I was an atheist they said I should read the Bible. Why? What good would reading the Bible do? It's nothing but the record of beliefs of people who lived 2000+ years ago, and it's full of contradictions, absurdities, atrocities (many condoned, commanded or committed by god), failed prophecies and fairy tales. The mistake religionists make is their automatic assumption the Bible is 100% true so anyone who reads it will see the "truth" of Christianity. The vast majority of them, being brainwashed by their church, will never see the error of this assumption.

"Atheists just want to sin". Well, glossing over the rather nebulous and arbitrary definitions of "sin" and just sticking with some of the biggies like killing and stealing, I have *no desire* to do those things at all. Nor do I want to commit adultery or boil a kid-goat in its mother's milk. I have, however, encountered a Christian who *stole* from my neighbour and when I confronted her about it she merely looked up at the sky and said "Sorry God." so I could be justified in thinking that Christians just want to be *forgiven* for the sins they want to commit. "Yeah, lady, I stole your stuff but I squared it up with God, so it's all cool. kthxbye." Maybe we should be running around and saying "Christian, huh? You just want to sin like a demon and then escape the consequences of your actions."

Yea, that's pretty much what the New Testament comes down to - the one and only way to get to heaven is through belief and love of Jesus Christ. If you live and absolutely abhorrent live as a vile caricature of a human being, but "repent" and accept Jesus as your savior, you can get to heaven. But if you're a shining paragon of compassion, empathy, love and humanity, but don't believe...eternal suffering it is. Yea, that hardly sounds fair, good, or righteous in any way. I got similar problem with the concept of karma. If we get exactly as we deserve then it could be assumed that a person who's suffering horribly must have deserved it. So...why should we help that little kid who is being raped to death? Surely they must have done something absolutely horrible to deserve that. The entire concept is beyond immoral and promotes a passive approach towards suffering.

I've had a Christian deem me to be an utter monster for *not forgiving* a former friend for sexually molesting a child - because "God would forgive him" (presumably if he "repented" and asked for Christ's salvation) and therefore I'm a monster because I won't. There's nothing so depraved that you can do that can't be "forgiven" if you "find Jesus" and nothing so great that you can do that's "good enough" if you don't. And Christians think they're "good people" despite believing that wholeheartedly and thinking that it's fair or "justice".

Re: "There are no atheists in foxholes": An atheist who was very close to me suffered from cancer (this started long after they stopped believing in any gods). Eventually a complication with their chemotherapy reared its ugly head, their weakened immune system couldn't fend off a bout of pneumonia and antibiotics weren't helping. I was visiting this person in hospital in a catholic city, and although I was in deep denial at the time, they had accepted that they wouldn't survive the night. A nurse entered and asked whether the patient wanted to see a priest. The atheist scoffed. I've never been prouder than when I look back at that moment. Everything else about that night is a terrible, painful memory, but that one instant is a constant reminder of why I loved that person. I have no reason to believe that I'll behave differently when my time comes. That night also showed me something about myself: When I'm at my worst, I wish I believed in a supernatural being I could blame and/or take comfort from to relieve the pain. I don't, though, and wishing hard enough will not change that.

Hospitals do that all the time, and usually have a "religious center" on site (probably used to be called chapels but now they are used for multiple religious services). And if you _are_ Christian you certainly might want to see a priest. When i was going through my own cancer treatments last year one of the questions on my entrance paperwork is about religion, and even tho i had always told them i was an atheist, i still had a person walk into my room mid chemo treatment one week and ask if i wanted to talk about god. I told her "im an atheist" and she said "that's okay, i like talking to atheist". I then told her "normally i would love to talk to you about religion, but im going through chemo right now and my brain is fried from the drugs (chemo brain)". She said she might stop back later and i never saw her again which was fine with me. I also had a nurse at one point that kept talking about god, but really besides those two times i never had any issues with the hospital. Even when i was going twice a week for infusions i never had any of the volunteers ask to "pray with me" or anything which was nice. But still, that lady that walked into my room i think should not have happened. I had filled out paperwork that clearly stated that i had no religious tendencies, so did she know this and not care? Did the hospital not give her this information? There is a lot of HIPPA stuff that goes on in medicine but surely if there are religious "therapist" walking around then they should get a heads up to not bother with non believers. I also kept thinking that what if it was a Christian going through chemo and a Muslim walked into their room wanting to talk about Muhammad and Allah. Probably would not go over very well. I don't want to jump and say the hospital has a clear Christian bias (i don't think it does), but im betting this is just another example of how Christianity has seeped into so much of our life that Christians dont even realize when they over step boundaries. It's just "how its always been" so they think it's okay.

As a fundamental Baptist, our every service was predicated on the existence of sinners in the congregation and their guilt compelling them to come down the aisle, to kneel on the altar at the closing and cry and pray and beg forgiveness from the Lord. We were told to confront our sins, to be angry at Satan, to fear the Lord and feel rebuked for our bad thoughts and actions. We were told that every one of us was born into sin and must constantly ask the Lord to protect us from Satan. What they don't realize is a lot of Christians use their faith as an excuse to get away with terrible behavior because "oops, I sinned, but God will forgive me." This may not even be a conscious thought process, but it's certainly present in how many view the faith, and it gives them an excuse to avoid self-reflection because you don't need to blame yourself if there's a supernatural force (like the devil) to blame for your bad behavior. If you are a jerk, it's the devil getting in you, but it's ok because God will forgive you! For many non-theists, rejecting that way of thinking means that your own actions are your own actions and you yourself must take the consequences of those actions and accept blame and learn from those mistakes. If you're a jerk, it's your own fault and you are the one that will need to make strides to fix that personality flaw, because no one else can do it for you.

4:30 the same logic is often applied to gatekeep gender and sexuality identities! "you can't be trans if you've not known from kindergarten age" or "you can't be a lesbian if you've ever had sex with a man and enjoyed it" or "if you've identified as gay, but now you identify as bi, you were never gay in the first place". While it's proven that people don't just "become gay", that sexuality and gender are core to a person from birth, i think this doesn't account for people figuring themselves out a bit more and a bit more as they develop over a lifetime. If a label fits you now, and in a year, you find one that fits better, it doesn't have to mean that the other one was false. It was the label that described your experience best at the time, and now it doesn't anymore. What i find way more relevant is asking: Why does it matter so much? Why does it matter whether i've identified differently in the past? Why do you think YOU hold the key to the gate, to judge whether i'm christian / atheist / gay / bi enough to get YOUR seal of approval? It seems to often be done out of a fear that *me* living that label differently than *you* live the same label, or even me leaving behind that label might negate your experience. It does not. Also, just because an experience and a label we attach to that experience have changed, it doesn't mean that all previous labels have been terribly misguided. Even if i now say i'm definitely not a christian, it doesn't mean i never was and it doesn't negate that i have found comfort and community within that label. Denying someone access to a label means denying someone access to feeling like part of a community - and that is the most wicked thing you can do to the human psyche.

@Rift Reaper First off most Abrahamic religions operate under the caveat that "All things occur in accordance with Yahweh's will (divine plan)". That means that Yahweh not only didn't stop the "pain in Earth" he actively caused it. Apparently so that a miniscule percentage could somehow experience "eternal pleasure in heaven" while the vast majority suffer in eternal agony. So your earlier comment of "Thanks for destroying my country for some fucking oil" ... well, that was also due to Yahweh's will so who are you to question it? Seriously ... that's one of the counter-arguments when atheists talk about Yahweh ... theists often respond with "Who are YOU to question GOD!". Second, this idea that prayer is somehow effective leads many Abrahamic theists to portray Yahweh as the hero regardless of the outcome. A 1 in 1,000,000,000 success rate means that "God's Miraculous Healing" worked and the 999,999,999 deaths become "It's God's will ... they're in a better place" all with zero real-world evidence showing that any of it actually exists. So called "Christian Scientists" have literally sat back and watched their children die from easily treatable diseases based on the belief that "only prayer can cure". And when the child dies they sit back and proclaim "it's God's will" and go on with their lives because "they're in a better place". For Christians the bible and most of the different sects say that belief in Yahweh and praying to Yahweh are effective tools to deal with real world problems but always with the built-in excuse that the failure is either due to a lack of faith on the part of the person praying or some variant of "mysterious ways" implying that "God's will" requires all of the pain, suffering and death to "weed out the unworthy" while still proclaiming that Yahweh's love is perfect, unconditional and all-encompassing. . I won't speak for anyone other than myself but the real reason this bugs me out is that religious groups prey on the scared, lonely, ill and grieving to surrender their lives, effort, relationships and (oh yeah) money to promote this unsupported belief that what we have now (life on Earth) is nothing more than a rehearsal for "something better" after we die. And the worst part of this is that most of the con-artists involved don't realize that they're con-artists ... they actually believe the nonsense they spew.

@@j.oaklley8965 no one is saying jesus is fake, he was a real person most likely, but not a holy messenger of God. there is no proof to explain jesus on either size of the argument. the bible is not credible. thats the idea of atheist and agnostics: there is no proof for it so id rather not believe in something that is a lie possibly. although there are proof for certain things being fake in religion, like the idea that god created man which is disproved by evolution which has piles upon piles of intelligent scientific research put into it over decades

Halfway through and just noticed your "BS" on essential oils sign! XD LOVE IT. I belong to a DEEPLY religious family and one of my family members sells essential oils *facepalm. Thankfully I've recently found a few family members who aren't believers. They're not anywhere near my age but good to see older and younger family members (by several decades both ways) feel as I do...we're still in the minority in our family and still closeted though
