I love having decluttered that lower layer of never used stuff out of my dresser drawers. Now every pair of socks is a pair I use regularly, every t-shirt is used and washed and refolded on a regular basis. When I open the drawers and am able to see all the items neatly rolled, it's so pleasing. It also discourages me from buying new stuff because I know I already have what I need and don't want to get rid of anything to make room for more.

"Half full is the new full." I love that! My closet is pretty full because I got rid of my dresser but I definitely live by that half full rule in the kitchen for easy access from the cabinets as well as airflow in the fridge.

My problem is, I already do this. I have zones and baskets in place that I use but my husband is a complete slob and lays stuff down wherever he is finished with them. For instance (one example of many) I have an antique, homemade farmhouse table on my front porch with beautifully arranged flower pots of different sizes filled with pretty flowers…. And tools and work gloves and Sapir batteries for the weed eater. Obviously you can tell where I end and he comes in on that one. How do you train your spouse to comply???? He’s exhausting!

I hate using this as an example but... if a cat is scratching a piece of furniture often putting a scratching post near it with catnip rubbed on it will get the cat to scratch that instead ( it works for me most of the time) so maybe with your husband put a little table near the farmhouse table and encourage him to put stuff on that instead and train him in stages? Again very sorry to compare him to a cat but it's the principle of filling his need of a convenient place on the porch for him to lay things down while keeping it off your nice table 😟

😂, yeah, I have a similar problem, but in my case it's not that I have a husband, and the problem is that I'm "the slob".. and I still don't do as I tell myself, or want, and it often goes on my nerves😆.. but it is exhausting and I try to figure out something, but for different reasons that can be somewhat frustrating.. Well, I have no idea how else to put it, so are you a bit of a "neat freak"? it's not meant in a bad way, and just a thought I got.. that maybe he got used to put things wherever, but when he needs them, he "miraculously" gets them, from where they supposed to be!?

My husband runs a mechanics and resale business” from our home and hes always leaving stuff everywhere. The only thing i found helpful was telling him/reminding him what areas/baskets im using for his stuff/business stuff and coming behind him at night to put things there. Eventually he will remember to look and eventually like putting things in those places because he will know where they are. Honestly i used to get irritated about it if i just cleaned something why put stuff all over it mess it up again but then i realized he just focused on something else or absent minded left it there and its convenient for him to put it there just like i appreciate convenience i should understand so does he. Nothing really amazing solutions here but with my mind shift i wasnt so edgy about it and that was really good for me. Thank the Lord for showing me my faults and opportunities to grow and better our situation

I hear you! I found if I could make systems as easy to follow, people will do them. Maybe you could add another table or storage area to the places he's using and start with that? I had the same problem with my kids' shoes so the basket by the door was a small thing that they actually follow!

I used to be a professional organizer. I closed my business many years ago. However, I lean to clutter even though I hate it. In painting our house, each area gets decluttered at that time. Next rooms are primary bathroom and closet and yes, I'm looking to making it half full. Thanks for the reminders.

Re. Husbands and clutter, heres what i have done and am doing. It takes patience. I start with my spaces and my stuff. I get that down to a reasonable amount. I dont worry about any other family members. The house will still look much better after you do a purge of only your stuff. My husband often follows suit, not perfectly, but without me saying anything or having to nag 😊
