Actually, I do disagree with the shirt collar point. Yes, the shirt collar should be underneath of the jacket's lapel, however there are some exceptions. If you're going to wear a collar pin, the shirt collar point does not have to go underneath of the jacket's lapel. And of course that doesn't apply to you because you don't wear a collar pin nor a tie bar lol....I enjoy watching bro!

I work in the industry right now and I gotta say, your advice is on point. The issue I've run into is the same issue you had with guys with their shirt collars. They just don't care. I always appreciated being left with the decision for them, I can base the style off of what fits them best rather than some Pinterest post their girlfriend saw. The other issue I've run into is that guys don't want to wear their pants anywhere above their hips, so pleats are usually out. Especially on bigger guys, they just refuse to do so. I love that cuffs and pleats are coming back. Because of the functional benefits they provide, they're an essential element of classic formal menswear. A few years from now we'll likely look back and think that the recent period of predominately straight fronts and no cuffs was really odd and unusual.
@v_r_5 жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas, I feel like things like cuffs and pleats have never really left Classic Menswear due to their functionality as you mentioned. But I’m not sure if they’re actually making a comeback amongst the majority. At least not in New York cause I haven’t noticed them except on fellow style enthusiasts. @Ray Sr. I am Old School. In the 50's, when I started my High Tech career in the Drawing Office of what became the Cochlear device, I had to wear an Engineer's dust coat over my suit, particularly when I was in the machine shop. I started out studying to become a Chemical Engineer before I used that drawing office training to sell computers, after I spent several years as a Sales Engineer in the Process Water industry. So I still wore a suit and an Engineer's dust coat as I climbed on roofs and all the other dirty places where the massive plant and equipment was installed. But along with the dust coat I had to carry a Boiler Makers one piece blue overalls, to cover my suit, because I had to crawl right inside the boilers, to ensure that they would pass the regular legal inspection. The message is that if you want to be very well paid, always be the "Tech in a suit", while everyone else was laughing at me, I was earning twice their money, because I could always take off the very industrial style protection, and then go and meet with the most senior management, looking like I had just stepped out of a page in GQ. I could stand having fun poked at my suit, because I the guy who drove away from those factories in General Motor's Australian version of a Cadillac and I laughed all the way to the Bank. And I did that while I was employed by the largest multinational companies. Wearing a suit fattens your wallet, not your waistline. Phil.

Don't know if I agree with all of these points. Cuffs. I used to cuff all my dress pants. Now I am agnostic. It looks cool, but I think it tends to shorten the leg. As I already have relatively short legs for my height, I think maybe uncuffed works better for me. Ties. I don't mind wearing an expensive tie, but I hate paying a lot of money for them. Ties are among the most vulnerable items of clothing men wear. Get caught in a thunderstorm without an umbrella, or spill some soup on one, and that tie might just be going in the trash. And, mishaps can happen to expensive ties as often as less expensive ties. Once I bought an expensive tie off a clearance rack at a fancy boutique and wore it for my closing argument at a jury trial. In those days, that courthouse used these very old tables, and they had velcro all around the edges of the table. Well, you might have guessed it. Somehow, my $100 tie got caught on the velcro and messed up the tie. I brought it back to where I got it, and the salesman gave me some story about the special weave of this tie being MORE delicate than cheaper ties. Here is the thing. You don't get to say that quality will last, yet at the same time, quality items are more delicate. The truth is, some of my favorite ties came from clearance bins, discount stores, and especially, thrift stores. I still try to avoid the cheapest of the cheap, but surprisingly, a well chosen tie doesn't have to be expensive to complete a look.
@v_r_5 жыл бұрын
Hey Martin, thanks for stopping by, I always appreciate your thoughtful comments. I agree that short men can do without cuffs altogether but they look much better to my eyes than cuffless trousers assuming they’re not too high. Regarding ties, I don’t think I’m saying that they should be expensive but rather not cheap. Personally I do tend to buy ties valued at a $100 or more -albeit the one in the video was $60- and I usually find that they tie a much nicer knot than my less expensive ones. Something that I often do is buy them out of season at a nice 50% discount or so. Finally, I think that you can find some real gems at thrift stores. I don’t really consider those cheap. I’m more referring to brand new ties that cost around $20, in my past experience, they’ve never worked for me. P.S. Maybe I’ve been lucky but I’ve never had anything mishaps with any of my ties yet (knock on wood). Hopefully it stays that way.
@martintanz90985 жыл бұрын
@@v_r_ It doesn't happen often, but I have got caught out in the rain, and just yesterday, I was at a restaurant and literally, on the last bite of my appetizer, some sauce dripped right onto my tie. I will do a bit of research on getting the stain out, but in my experience, a tie that has been spilled on is never the same. But hey, that is fine. Though it wasn't a cheap tie, I only paid $2 for it at a thrift store, so it didn't even cost as much as the food that ruined it.. Had I paid full retail, it might have upset me more.
@v_r_5 жыл бұрын
Reading this is gonna make me even extra careful now LOL
@phillipmoodie90714 жыл бұрын
@Martin Tanz. It's not just the $100 silk tie that is delicate, so is the $2,000 fine merino wool suit and the cashmere pullover. When I was in my early twenties (60 years ago) I had to do a lot of traveling and lived in small country hotels, which resulted in several items of my very expensive clothing being ruined. But I had an Insurance Policy, that was sold to me by a Door to Door salesman, which covered the full replacement cost. Such a policy probably still exists, possibly as part of some household policy. But it is no different than the policy you buy to cover an expensive motor vehicle. Phil.
@phillipmoodie90714 жыл бұрын
@@martintanz9098 In my career in mainframe computer sales, with a very generous expense account to cover entertaining Corporate Directors, my silk ties suffered. I found that most Dry Cleaners, who still charge more than $15 to clean a silk tie usually ruin the appearance of the tie. But I then discovered that the Dry Cleaners in the High Street shopping strip, in Melbourne's most affluent suburb could return my ties looking like new for the same charge. I think the difference between the two approaches was the average suburban Dry Cleaners have very little experience in handling top grade pure silk. The suggestion is that you can use the service of Dry Cleaners who can clean pure silk ties, by simply taking all of your clothing to the Dry Cleaners who service "The Rich and Famous" every day, not just once a month. Phil.

Not to mention the fact that I speak fast plus English is not my first language, so I definitely get how some of my words can be hard to understand sometimes. You are fantastic. Wish I could contact you privately. I am in Ghana, Africa but visit the US quite often. May I have your email please.

Thanks, fam! New Yorkers tend to talk fast but it’s also the way I edit. I’ll be more mindful next time.
