Love the video, Richard! A couple of points: - To anyone confused about the point on tarantulas being venomous rather than poisonous, the distinction is that venom must be injected, while poison must be ingested, or absorbed through the skin or eyes - That’s absolutely fascinating that the pedipalps of arachnids are thought to have once been antenna, I never knew that! - It’s a small point, but technically tarantulas have two _pairs_ of book lungs, while most spiders have one _pair_ of book lungs, since most spiders (i.e., most if not all spiders within the Araneomorphae infraorder) additionally have structures called trachea, which are tubes that run directly to their tissues; I personally suspect, but do not know for sure, that trachea are more efficient for smaller body plans, while book lungs become more efficient for larger body plans - Regarding the point that “no breathing takes place,” that depends on your definition of “breathing;” what is currently accepted is that no expanding or contracting of the book lungs takes place to aid in air circulation, and as was said, only diffusion occurs, so if you define “breathing” as sucking in air it doesn’t take place, but if you define “breathing” as the exchange of oxygen for carbon dioxide, it does

Great video. You should consider doing a piece on Australian Tarantulas. There’s only a few species here that are formally recognised with a species name - most are referred to by the location which they are found. A lot of the ground work with Ts here is being done by collectors and hobbyists. There’s a lot of mystery around them, so I think it would be a good idea for a video.

Thank you for taking the time to educate your listeners. My little boy & I are about to pick up our baby Queensland Whistling Tarantulas as our wild girl just died 😪. She was a garden orb weaver and we all loved her so much. My entomologist suggested Tarantulas for us as they live for over a decade usually so we are super excited.. . .& looking forward to your next tips. Thanks again, guy. Well done. 🇦🇺

I have a 2 year old avicularia avicularia and she has grown sooo much! She has been pretty much a silent observer in our home and sit quietly in her terrarium which is a live eco system itself. I have springtails as my clean up crew and they have been great at keeping her home clean. So I have a question about how I go about cleaning up her webbing she makes or do I even do that? She made a big system up across the top and down the corner of the tank. She recently molted and then destroyed her web by ripping it in half. Do I remove that old stuff or will she do that and I should be patient with her process? I thank you for reading this and if you want to give me a opinion I appreciate it.

Hi Richard. Thanks for your great videos. I have a question for you about my juvenile Brazilian Blue. He molted more than a month ago, but he is losing hair on his abdomen and I do not know the reason why, because he didn't kick any hair at me. He is also always sitting against the glass of the terrarium. Do you maybe know what could cause him to lose his hair.
@tarantulacollective2 жыл бұрын
He may not be kicking hair at you, but it sounds like he is kicking hair around the enclosure. It is typical behavior for tarantulas to kick urticating hair around their burrow and in their web as a defensive measure.

Great info, my question is can a tarantula recognize their owners? After a certain amount of time, do they still feel defensive??
@DMcC2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that tarantulas don't "tame down" in that way --- their nervous system is fairly primitive and they don't demonstrate a lot of higher cognition such as memory. The personalities vary though and I've seen extremely docile tarantulas that tolerate humans just fine, but that's not really the result of them becoming tame, but rather just being super-chill in the first place for whatever reason.

You’re going to tell me at 2:07 that arachnid 🕷 and it’s foot long size, that I would literally have to use to kill it, is more scared of me? Come on. It’s presence alone is frightening. I can see it but it can’t see my height and how I locked up just seeing it from distance. 🫣😰
