Solid recommendations Richard. The only thing I like to add to people looking for a "first tarantuala" is to make sure they digest growth rates and manage expectations if they buy slings. My first was a B. albiceps which I got as a sling and it did moult a couple of times, but then went into her burrow and hung out there for a full year before finally moulting again and coming back out. I knew it was a "slow growing species", but that year of a pet hole is why I have so many spiders now. Go in eyes open and realize that what starts with one spider can quickly get out of control :).
@King107110 ай бұрын
Question.... so when your T went into hiding, what did you do about feeding it? did you still consistently offer food throughout the year? If so, was it live food or did you pre kill? I'm curious cause I have a sling doing the same thing and I'm trying to figure out how to handle it...
@DMcC10 ай бұрын
I did occasionally toss in a cricket but she didn't care and had walled off anyway. As far ss I can tell she just didn't eat for a year. Didn't let the place dry out and let her do her thing. Spider's gonna spider.@@King1071
@AlfonseGambino10 ай бұрын
@@King1071What I always did with mine when they wouldn't eat I would just wait till he/she would come out and start looking around. Usually they only do that when they are getting hungry. I haven't owned many though so don't take that as concrete because that has only been my experience.I used to feed my one tarantula mice once a month.

@@AlfonseGambino I didn't see mine for about 2 weeks after bringing him home. He was fed once before he burrowed...I dug his ass up to make sure he was ok recently but he just made a new hiding spot, still not eating so I'm just playing the waiting game now... Was just curious about how and if I should still offer food
@mach22677 ай бұрын
@@King1071don't dig them up! Slings burrow as a defense mechanism and will come up and eat when they are ready. they can go months without eating if they choose to so don't worry. Just let it do it's thing, keep it's substrate moist so it doesn't dehydrate and let it come up when it's comfortable.

Hey Richard, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your videos. They have really helped me lately. Since I was a kid, I loved tarantulas. I had a few over the years but I had to give them away in my early twenties. I always wanted another, but my wife was very against it. Recently, I was shopping and I took my two foster kids into a Petco just to entertain them for a bit while my wife shopped next door. For some reason that day, my wife told me I could get one. I was stoked, but I resisted, because I wanted to gain more knowledge and do it right. I watched a ton of your videos, and recently went to a reputable pet shop, and purchased a Tliltocatl albopilosus and put her in a good size enclosure that I made from a clear shoe storage box with magnetic lid that I got from Hobby Lobby. My wife has really been interested in her and realized her fear of tarantulas was unwarranted. The best part, is that my foster daughter and I have really bonded over our interest in spiders. She is four years old and never really wanted much to do with me since we’ve had her the past two years. Now, we both get excited for feeding time and talk about tarantulas all the time. I never thought a spider could change things in such a great way. Anyway, thanks again for your awesome, informative videos. They have helped immensely.

Great to see the _Grammostola pulchripes_ get some love, that was my first T. To this day, she’s still my favorite pet. I can attest to the _Aphonopelma chalcodes_ being slow growing, I got mine as a half inch sling in late 2019, and today (February of 2024) it’s under two inches DLS. Has its adult coloration, tho. I’ve got a _Brachypelma hamorii_ and a _Brachypelma smithi,_ and I wouldn’t handle either one (not that I really ever handle my Ts), they both kick hairs at the slightest provocation

For my first batch I got two grammastolas, two avics, a Brazilian Blue Dwarf, an LP, and a phormictomus dominican purple. That's probably my first and only batch. I'm raising the LP for a friend that is a teacher - it's going in his classroom when it gets big. As a new keeper, I can say that 6 is an ideal number. I would get bored with just one, but if I had more it would be too much. As it is I can enjoy and appreciate each one. While one is in pre molt, another is being interesting. I'm also into "nice" display enclosures and this is a good amount to show off. Having a variety of genus is also great as you can see different behavior. Cheers on the new space Richard! I started learning from you guys last summer, got my batch a couple months later. Now after being a keeper for about 6 months I'm settling into the routine, watching the little guys grow.

I do not handle any of my T’s with the exception of Avics during rehousing when they wonder around - but the N. Chromatus are awesome for a beginner. Not too fast, my experiences with them over the years have never proved them to be more aggressive than any other NW’s - the eating responses of my Avics is more aggressive (Jumping and running down grasshoppers) than any of my Nhandu’s. The list is great though and all your content is Grade A! Peace from Colorado.

I was considering ordering both of them, but in my current situation im not really in a position to get new ts in the near future :(

Do vids on rehoming Arboreal tarantulas and also list the most difficult species of tarantulas to care for in the hobby. Also make more vids on the Venezuelan Sun Tiger that is the one spider i want as my first. Just asking no big deal

Hi Richard, I was wondering about the tarantulas called Rose something I read a true story from the library called The Legacy of Annie Rose. It's a beautiful book about a woman who was deathly afraid of Spider and then she met this Tarantula and they became best friends. I love Jumping spiders and I'm interested in Tarantulas but they still kinda scare me with how they walk. But when they do the little pet shows at the library I'm brave enough to let one crawl on my head. I also heard their hairs/ bites feel like bee stings and I'm really scared of bees yet. I am also really scared of snakes but I want to get rid of all these fears I have. Will I ever be able to rid myself completely of these phobias?

My first one I just got, is the Arkansas brown. And it’s young. I saved her and nursed her back from death when we found her. Now I have a tank and everything for her and I got to say she’s amazing for a T.

Great recommendations, Richard! I just got my first Curly Hair sling and had our first successful molt early December. It didn't eat for a week and then burrowed down covering* the entrance for another week before resurfacing. Recently, it stopped eating again but then went into it's burrow and has not come out in a month.... i'm starting to get worried because it used to be out on display a lot, moving around and just being very active... any advice would be amazing. i'm particularly debating on dropping a small cricket in its enclosure to see if it will come out to eat it.

The pink toed use to be my only favorite. Now, I think I love the palomino blonde now as well.

i own a 2 year old curlyhair whos currently id say 4-5 cm big, shes already in her 30x30 enclosure and i'm super worried its stressing her out.. she eats, drinks and over the day does nothing but hide in her burrow. i havent seen her hide in her legs or anything, shes never threat posed or kicked hairs "at me", she has a bald spot, but arrived with it and i havent seen it get bigger yet.. I can ALWAYS find her, id say the enclosure is 5 x her leg span in width and 6 in length.. nothing really tells me that shes stressed, she doesnt exessively climb walls etc.. Again she mostly does nothing, but at night time she likes to move around a bit and i cant tell if its enough to call it pacing.. Ive only had her for 1 1/2 weeks so im trying to be patient.. But i still always seek a professionals opinion-- since i know smaller enclosures are often preferred for not fully grown tarantulas

@@daft4682 I'm quite new with the hobby. What is LP?
@daft468210 ай бұрын
@@simplelad4722 That's the Lasiodora parahybana, also known as the salmon pink bird eater (you don't actually feed it birds). It is fast growing and gets very large, but the hairs are known to be quite nasty and they are quick to kick hairs so be super overly careful. I think the grammastola pulchra and pulchrpies, also the avics and carabena versacolor (which is basically an avic) are probably the best overall beginners IMO. I've heard the grammastola rosea and curly hairs can be hit and miss on temperment. Grammastolas grow slow, avics grow pretty fast. Cheers.
@daft468210 ай бұрын
@@simplelad4722 btw, the reason I picked the phormictopus is because it's fast growing like the LP and almost as large, but the hairs aren't as bad and they aren't very prone to kicking hairs. They are big and feisty but probably not too dangerous. I wouldn't consider touching it. Mine almost teleports to grab food. Also look at the Brazilian White Knee for fast growing, but it has nasty hairs also.

My first were the Hamorii and the Phormictapus Auratus. Last summer i went to a reptile convention and bought a Tliltocatl Vagans and a Grammostola Pulchra. The pulchra was the only one i could find amongst the thousand spiders. And indeed payed a pretty penny for her. She is around 1,5 years old confirmed female so it was worth it.

Been into the colubrid and ball python collecting and breeding. Just got my first curly haired today. Very tame and doesn't have issues being handled. Any tips would be appreciated.

After around 40 years of keeping snakes, lizards, scorpions, stick insects, dogs, cats and birds. I have finally started with tarantulas. I have been without any pets for a few years as I haven't had the time or money to keep anything. A few years ago I went back to stick insects (Australian Giant Prickly Macleays Spectre), to teach my kids about insects. But I have wanted tarantulas all my life. So against my wife's wishes, I bought my first one. A Mexican Red Rump spiderling. It was absolutely tiny when I got it a few months ago (about 1cm), now it is already bigger than large house spiders. I love it, but now the bug has got me and I want more. Thanks for the video's, I will be going through them and learning more. I am in the UK btw, so it's not as easy to get certain species, I am looking at the Brazilian Blue as I can get one now, But I would like an Amazon Blonde.
