It was a baboon spider which bit the young Tolkien in South Africa and the resultant trauma probably lies at the root of his creation of the nightmarish Shelob in "The Lord of the Rings "and the Mirkwood spiders in "The Hobbit".

I was always petrified of my African red trapdoor. Kept her in a container on my desk after a fresh re-house. Dropped a pencil while filling stuff out and she struck the side of her enclosure. Then held a defensive position with venom dripping from her fangs for hours.

They are so lovely. I actually like that they are slow growing, it's made my hentzis very popular with people who would be intimidated by a bigger tarantula (my biggest is about 3" DLS atm). Most people will handle her where they might not be able to deal with my big, sweetheart hamorii.

It bewilders me how any tarantula could be hated. My two H. Mac girls (though now old) are darlings who’ve never even raised a fang at me. I remember waking up in the early hours a few years back to find I hadn’t closed the door on Daisy’s tank properly. She was sitting on my headboard, watching over me whilst I slept❤ (the little one went back into her tank as good as gold). Never kept H. gigas but I have 4 H. crassipes. They’re very shy & like to skinny-dip so my larger one (and they’re VERY large) got an extra large water bowl as a jacuzzi ! Not got any obt’s at the mo but 4 P. murinus UMV & 3 mikumi juveniles. They’re shy but not aggressive, one UMV even went on a little adventure last week, walking up & down all over me before going back into her enclosure (her choice). All tarantulas should be loved, people should do species research to avoid disappointment !👍👍👍👍

My OBTs have made different, unique webbing every time I've rehoused them and I see them often if not out in the open, then peeking out from their hides. My H Macs are a little more reclusive but they grew fast and are impressive whenever they come out, and that colouration is beautiful.

I guess when i came into the hobby i thought that these characteristics define some species like the OBT. And now that i was fortunate enough to acquire 3 spiders with more to come, I have already learned that every spider can be different. The Murinus was supposed to be this menace and mine is actually pretty calm most of the time, as soon as I open the enclosure, she goes to hide. Not even once did she try to defend herself and her takedowns are mostly uneventful. Meanwhile my Brachypelma Hamorii takes several roaches at once, randomly jumps on the tongs and catches pray mid air, rolling around with it

I bought an obt when I was young in the hobby on looks alone knowing nothing about it. First night it got out while I was trying to show it off to some friends at a party I had at my house. I was able to catch it and get it back in it enclosure then immediately did some research. Listed as extremely fast, quick to bite, and usually wet bites. I can tell you from first hand experience it absolutely bites multiple times and as a first form of defense. That being said like mentioned in this video it was a very easy spider to have and care for just a but of an anxiety attack to re house and clean the cage. I would and likely will add one to my collection in the future once I get the wife to chill about the three spiders I currently have lol

They are awesome and I plan to keep them more often. I have three already with two of them being the Kigamo color form.

When I saw the title to this video, my first pick, immediately that popped into my head was the OBT. It's a love/hate relationship. I have a dozen slings and they are the most difficult I found to raise. Feeding time is a challenge to not have them run out of the little deli cup they are housed in the minute you open to drop food in. I do have a method that works for me. I do all maintenance over a huge pot and when they escape they drop into the large pot, with several catch cups, paint brushes and tongs I can successfully get them safely back inside but feeding time is not a quick choir without its challenges. Given that, I still absolutely love them. I refer to them as my trouble childs!

I got the dcf Kenya variant of the nippy boi and hoping to give it plenty of opportunity to hide/ have space so any close encounters are limited/avoided. H maculata just looks incredible and Ive found i enjoy the more reclusive ones as its so rewarding to catch em out. (Im also getting a chilobrachys electric blue) That being said i have zero experience with spiders of this speed. My fastest before this is my GBB and i know comparing them to an OBT is like rabbits vs tortoises. Obviously everyone has different experiences, but I like my H gigas quite a bit. It’s far from grown but it’s one of the fastest growing species from what I’ve heard. Mine is a small juvenile. It’s skittish but it’s never let that stop it from taking down a cricket barely smaller than it. It’s definitely a very plain species, but mine is way more visible than I expected. It spends much of its time with its front half outside of its burrow waiting for food. I also got it as a freebie so that makes it even better lol. I don’t think I’d ever recommend it to someone who only wants one or two species, but it’s a good addition to any collection in my opinion

I collect based off the temperature of my reptile room, and the research I do, I NEVER Handle them (except my Mexican red rump, and my curly hair that I’ve had for 8 years!) I learned I have 2 on this list😂 I am ALWAYS respectful and cautious of them😂 I give them large habitats to do their thing❤I JUST got to the red rump part 🥺🥺 she/he has been the ONLYYYY one who’s ALWAYS so calm and not threatened when I handle them 🥺

i am since 10 years in the hobby but still consider myself a beginner , H.Maculata and P. Murinus are next level to me , my hands would shake dealing with them , but i wouldn't call it hatred 😅

I live in SW Kansas, and the Texas Brown is all over down here. I had a little female make a burrow in my backyard, and she had an egg sac, and I would very carefully go near her burrow opening and would see her quite frequently. Until this past Sunday when we had a particularly nasty storm come out of the east, and it dumped so much rain in a very short amount of time that my backyard flooded badly, and her burrow was completely covered in water at least by three inches. The water did not go into the ground like normal, and I saw her one time after the storm went through and she was at the opening and I could just see her through the water, and I haven’t seen her since. There is none of her webbing across the opening, and I don’t think she survived. Either that or she was able to get out and to ground with no water, but I have my doubts. 😢😢😢 But on the bright side, the rain we have been getting is helping with the worst drought level we have been in for almost a year. Maybe I’ll be able to see some males migrating this fall looking for girls. I don’t like spiders but I was attached to this little girl. 😢😢

I had some upside down catfish in my aquarium that hid whenever the light was on. It's frustrating to tell people how cool they care, if they could only see 'em.

Poor A. hentzi. I would not have put it or the T. vagans on such a list. I am from Germany, so no tarantulas can be found in nature, and I like brown Ts, especially when they are docile. And I once had a vagans that was just awesome and super calm. Actually, I never had a T I didn't like, but I haven't kept too many. I guess what bothers me most is when you can never spot them.

King Baboons are gorgeous, even if they are pet holes. My OBT was my favorite T that I ever had, and probably b/c it acted like I expected all tarantulas to, before I started keeping them.

I had a red rump years ago. She was very docile and easy to handle. Had a orange baboob too. I gave it shallow bedding with a half log so I could see her more often. Mean as hell though. Lol

My OBT so far is 1 of my Favorite Soiders that I have!!! Like you say about Substrate. If you give them enough room for them to hide and escape. Mine at least is definitely not Aggressive or even super defensive for that matter. Awesome Species in my opinion!!! That was actually taken back by how many different tarantulas on the list are all Babboons. Because my Golden Blue Leg is also one of my top favorites that I currently own!!!

My gods, all those tarantulas are so beutiful! i want to take on as many as i can, but i lack the space to keep multiples. One of these days i want to get a vietnamese giant centipede. (convinced the lady to have more insects lol). I guess for now my little Siete will suffice until i can get more room. BTW great watching you and keep making great videos!

Cool footage as usual! I agree that: - Old World species are more defensive. I may not agree with the rank: - Although Asian Earth/tree tigers (the C. genus, Singapore Blue & those arboreal ornamentals) & African baboons dominate the league of the skittish, in my experience the tigers are generally more defensive than the baboons. P.S. The two Earth tigers from China, _C. hainanum_ & _C. huwenium_ , have some of the most lethal tarantula venom to mice. Drop by drop, it's more potent than the Chinese cobra's ( _N. atra_ ). The veom of them have been isolated & analyzed.

Love my OBT. Got him as one of my first 10 tarantulas and he’s probably one of my chillest ones. My tip to owning an OBT, get them as young as you can. Maybe not a sling but a juvenile that hasn’t matured yet would be best. Your confidence will grow along with your tarantula. Before you know it, you’re completely comfortable with a matured fully grown OBT and you can then start exploring the amazing world of Old World tarantulas.

I like the Togo I've just purchased a juvie female and my Cameroon baboon, adult female had 2 egg sacs and I had a large 250-300 slings communal for a year before moving them all on apart from 10 they were a joy. I've never owned a Texas brown, I have a King Baboon female and a T. Vagans female, I've had quite a few OBT's in my time, as I've bred them before, I don't quite understand why anyone can "hate" any of these species, as I quite like my pet holes and old worlds lol, I like them all hehe
