Kris, I see you looked a bit confused with the pants as a floatation device section. We use that in the military as part of our "drownproofing" training. It actually works. You take the legs, tie them together, make sure the waist of pants are completely zipped/buttoned up. Place the legs of the pants over your head and around your neck, then take the waist opening and start off by quickly submerging it under the water to form a starting "bubble" of air in the pants (ENSURE YOU KEEP THE WAIST OPENING POINTING STRAIGHT DOWN OR THE AIR WILL ESCAPE), then you slap the water and push bubbles to the opening underwater to inflate the pants more until fully inflated, the pinch the waist opening closed by placing it between your thighs, and you will float in a reclined/seated position. If you start losing air, open the waist, and reinflate by slapping down on the water and pushing the bubbles into the pants and close off again with the legs. Repeat as needed. This is a survival technique the military uses in case you are stranded in open water and have no floatation devices available. I promise this works. And for those that have never done it, it's actually kinda fun to practice.

The floatation thing is real. During a "drown-proofing" class in the US Army, they taught us to do exactly that. Even if you're a good swimmer, take your pants off and do this because you'll eventually get tired if you try to swim. The only caveat is that the material needs to be thick-ish, and once it's wet it holds air fairly well.

As someone who has had to wash uniform pants in the bathtub, I can see it being very effective as a floatation device. Them things do NOT wanna go underwater.

The fitted bed sheet at the beach (or the park... or any picnic location) is actually great! It does NOT mean it doesn't get sand on it. But it definitely works. It's great at the park for picnics or the littlest of humans to play in without being directly on the grass. 11:15 Here in San Diego, it's a common beach tip we give to newcomers and tourists to bring baby powder or cornstarch/corn flour with you to the beach because it's great at removing sand. It doesn't HAVE to be in a sock, you can use it straight from the bottle. However, I think keeping it in the sock means you have less excess powder to wipe off after removing the sand. It's like the grandma's trick to get gum out of your hair if it got stuck there: you put peanut butter on the gum, saturating it thoroughly, and it loosens it. You don't have to cut off the hair to remove the gum.
@AnnekeOosterink9 ай бұрын

For anyone who hasn't heard of this particular tip or doesn't get the logic of doing it, during the heatstroke tip, it makes sense to put cold towels or ice in places like the arm pit and around the sides of the neck because these areas are *huge* heat sinks. Unless the body is spread eagle (or emulating DeVinci's Vitruvian Man, the apex of T-posing lol), air cannot reach these places, meaning sweat cannot evaporate and cool them. Instead, the arms would be down, trapping heat, which is especially bad because the body doesn't sweat properly during heatstroke. It's counterintuitive, I know, but this may be a sign of dehydration and the body not being able to move and replenish fluid resources fast enough. The groin also works as a heat sink zone, so applying cold towels to these areas might help too. Additionally, using cold towels on the neck cools the major blood vessels taking blood to and from the brain, which is very important when a person is experiencing their brain cooking. Not cooling these areas instead allows the heart to pump blood that has collected heat from all over the rest of the body, which can damage cells, nerves and more. The best results happen when a person can be cooled down slowly, giving their body time to adjust, but immersion in cool or cold water can effectively treat heatstroke in as little as 15 minutes *when done properly, aka, please save this technique for medical professions or when being instructed by medical professionals.* Signs of Heat Exhaustion, which, if left untreated for an upwards of 30 minutes, can turn into heatstroke: - a headache - dizziness and confusion - loss of appetite and feeling sick - excessive sweating and pale, clammy skin - cramps in the arms, legs and stomach - fast breathing or pulse - a high temperature of 38C or above - being very thirsty Signs of Heatstroke (which, if seen or noticed, do what you can to move the affected person to a cooler location immediately and do what you can to cool them down while also calling medical services): - feeling unwell after 30 minutes of resting in a cool place and drinking plenty of water - not sweating even while feeling too hot - a high temperature of 40C or above - fast breathing or shortness of breath - feeling confused - a fit (seizure) - loss of consciousness - not responsive Always remember that heatstroke, if left unnoticed and untreated, can be very fatal, so keep and eye on yourselves and the people around you for signs and symptoms, everyone! Be safe and stay hydrated!

babs how long did it take to even write this comment or where did u find a place to copy and pasye it from oh my gosh😂
@NoahofWill2 жыл бұрын
@@siegfriedmordrake3229 It honestly might be. You must also keep in mind that your friend is in a state of being severely hyperthermic, and that the water's temperature, *depending on your location, the day, the currents, etc.,* might be below a threshold where you can do this safely and avoid giving her something known as Cold Shock Syndrome. This normally occurs in very cold or freezing water, *but* it has been noted to occur in water as warm as 21-25C/69-77F (which might have been caused by trying to do your example). Any warmer than that and the water does virtually nothing effective in terms of heat dispersion. It depends on the state of a person (if they are normally a healthy and hearty person), if they have any pre-existing conditions or are prone to heart conditions (cardiovascular issues as a known killer during Cold Shock Syndrome even in people without pre-existing conditions or genetic family history), if you can avoid putting even more stress on the person's body, accidentally causing more damage, and the current temperature of the waters at your location. There's a reason vets recommend you never put ice in your dog's water on hot summer days. Like I said, please don't submerge someone without either *some* amount of medical training, even just first aid, or being instructed by medical personnel. It's already advised just about everywhere that if you notice someone undergoing heatstroke, just call medical services, so you lose nothing by listening to instructions before trying a more extreme method on your own.
@Yipyipyay2 жыл бұрын
I had a heatstroke during school because nobody cared that I said I was showing signs of heat exhaustion. I wasn't allowed to go to the nurse or the bathroom (tiled, so it would be cooler) and they refused to open the windows. It was only after class ended and I blacked out trying to stand was I taken seriously. Please, everyone everywhere, just take heat exhaustion seriously.

Hair getting blonde in the sunlight is true! And it also works for brunettes with unique hair, my mom told me that because my hair gets blonde in the summer and im brunette and she said its quite rare so im thankful for that❤

The bathing cap thing at 5:50 actually does work, it's how we used to color-code the swimming ability of kids in the pool at camp, so we had to put on a lot of caps very quickly.

9:09 this ice in the bottle trick I have used for over two decades... BUT you have to leave it on it's side when it freezes, that way it cools the entire bottle, otherwise, it only cools the bottom bit of water and the top stays warm. It'll last for hours like this (depending on how large the bottle is). And it's great for bottles that have small openings and you can't get ice into...

With the snorkelling goggle hack, you don't need to burn it you just need a little bit of toothpaste and smear it onto the glass/plastic then wash it off in the water. I've used this for years and it works every time even the local marine reserve uses it.
@itsnoprobllama53632 жыл бұрын
...what does it do? Can't you just take off your goggles and dunk them under and then out them back on again? Does it make them fog proof?
@tessaa86362 жыл бұрын
@@itsnoprobllama5363 it makes it so there is no fog so you don't have to come up and take them off to make the fog go away, as that can be annoying.

8:51 I actually can say that, while it takes longer (definitely not 5 minutes), the single large ice cube takes longer to melt compared to a bunch of tiny ice cubes. Also, some water bottle heads are too small to put ice cubes through (I have one, it’s annoying when I want cold water), so starting out with water, freezing it sideways so you can still fill it up while having the ice evenly distributed, is actually a cool hack

6:36 as a scuba diver, I can confirm that, that is how we prep our masks for use after newly buying them. You do this every maybe 5-6 months. Before you get in the water though, you should use a defog spray or spit. 😁

Regarding freezing half your water, it actually really helps. I do this when I go out on hot days. The water stays colder much longer than if you just use ice cubes. I tend to freeze 2/3 of the bottle though
@protorhinocerator1422 жыл бұрын
If you're going to do all that, you could also bring something to protect the bottle from direct sunlight.
@nihtgengalastnamegoeshere75262 жыл бұрын
@@protorhinocerator142 'All that'? It's literally just putting your water bottle in the freezer the night before. Like, 30 seconds' work, max.
@SpringStarFangirl Жыл бұрын
I usually put an old sock on the bottle. Keeps the sun's radiation away from the ice longer.
@SpeedForce4525 Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't you actually lose more water that way though since ice expands as it freezes? Wouldn't more warm water be better for hydration than a lesser amount of colder water?
@ChristyTina22 Жыл бұрын
@@SpeedForce4525 On a really hot day, the cold water feels nicer. The whole point is that as the ice melts, you have more water to drink, and it's still cold.
