There are no quick fixes in dog training. But when you have a strategy for fixing your problems, your training starts to work! In this video, you'll learn about 5 MORE quick tips to stop your dog from pulling on the leash. In a previous video, we talked about some simple training tips that will help you to have more control when it comes to teaching your dog to walk on a loose leash. In this video, Instructor Steve will take a deeper look at some more of the choices you'll need to make when you're actually in the process of training your dog. Some of these tips are things that you can start using right away at any stage of your leash walking training. Other tips will prepare you for a few of the more advanced walking challenges. We've said it before, but having a plan for your leash walking training is crucial. And if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. By understanding the training choices in this video, you'll be taking a step (pun intended) toward more enjoyable walks with your four-legged family member!

Great video! I'm exhausted having to walk my 2 dogs separately; a few weeks ago, my 12 yr old started copying my 18 month old new rescue by charging at everything and everyone that moves. I walk the 18 month old with lots of chicken treats, she is doing better but has a very strong prey drive. She does great at the dog park, plays and wrestles with no problems...but she is Godzilla on a leash. She had a raw neck wound when I got her 8 months ago; she was probably chained outdoors. Rescue group couldn't give me any info. Your videos have been extremely helpful. Thanks!

I think you need to add "consistency" to this list :) - I know I have not been consistent and my 24 lb, field bred English Cocker is so difficult to take for a walk! We also have an older dog (12), and I know training him with the older dog there is that much harder! I feel so guilty taking the younger without the older but have started to realize that the older guy is still not getting to go for walks because we are now avoiding them due to younger guys behavior. So I guess, he only loses out for the short term if I just buckle down and try these tips (consistently :) ) Will let you know how it goes - thanks for these videos!

Thank you for the advice. I would love to know how to properly give correction to our 3mo old Golden Retreiver. Hes amazing when i give treats! I know he can do it but his attention span is short and i need to give corrections on the 3/8 inch slip lead (6ft). Feels a bit harsh on his even though i try and place it hight near his ears and jaw.

The pace really helped my 12 week old pup stay focused and he likes to “check in” with me. So cute..when he does get excited outside or indoors when playing, he starts to nip like a little shark lol can you guys make more videos on puppy nipping? I think I’ve seen them all and the collar technique almost triggers that craziness even more. House line helps but I’d rather figure out a more proactive approach than reactive..Help me! Lol he doesn’t break skin but it’s still a bit frustrating

Our issue is not pulling with our new 11 week Dane. It is him jumping at me, grabbing my pants and every now and then getting some leg on too ( or my shoes and or laces) grabbing his leash etc. He doesn’t care if I use a deeper sharper voice, ahah, a high squeal, toy or treat, he wants to grab and tug everything. This happens everywhere. He’d chew his house line all day if he could. Help please!

Lauren Lopez yeah, I’m discovering that they both need to go at the same time so it feels bad to take one out first, but I’m realizing I had a lot of time to train Kenzo by himself first, so trying to take them out at the same time doesn’t allow me to properly train them individually. You have two dogs as well?
@laurenml1222
@laurenml1222 3 жыл бұрын
Guillermo Gonzalez yes. I got them together in May and have been training separately and together. But like you said. They need to go out at the same time and it feels wrong to leave one inside while the other goes out! They’re terrific boys, well behaved for 6 months old- but the larger one loves to pull. I do find that when I say “look at me,” I get their attention immediately so that’s good. They know they’re routine is a good brisk walk each morning so to take that away would be sad. I think I’ll start spending more individualize time with the bigger guy so we can work on his pulling. I use goldfish crackers on our walks, so I’ll follow his advice here.
@YawaruSan
@YawaruSan 3 жыл бұрын
Lauren Lopez yeah, I felt the same way, though I realized that when the pulling dog sets the pace, the other dog doesn’t enjoy the walk as much and both seem more tense as I walk them. It’s about quality over quantity time, though it’s twice the work for walking them, the sacrifices we make for our dogs right?

If he whines on the walk make sure u leave him alone in the backyard and go inside and watch through window without him noticing you. Let him whine for couple minutes and if he still continues tell him to quite, pet him and leave again. I did this with my puppy and he doesn’t whine no more. Make sure u start to leave your dog outdoor while u are indoor that will bring a lot of difference.

The most frustrating thing about owning a puppy in a big city is that basically every person you walk by addresses the dog and wants to engage with it. I'm honestly shocked how many people think it's ok to purposefully distract a young dog by clicking their tongue, talking to it or even touching it without asking. I would love to be able to drive to the middle of a field and train my dog in silence, but it's just not an option.

Ah yes, that's the best and the worst thing about owning a hound. So amazing how they are in tune with their noses, so annoying when they won't pay attention to you because that blade of grass desperately needs sniffing. We're slowly reaching an equilibrium with our 16 month hound, she'll heel for a little while and then we tell her "go sniff" which means she can explore but not pull on the leash. It's not 100%, but most of the time she'll give up on a scent and pay attention when asked to. Hang in there :)

Emma Blomqvist Thanks for the encouragement. My beagle is only 3 months, so he is very much still a baby with a lot to learn. I have never trained a puppy before, so I have a lot to learn too. He is sweet as sugar, so that makes it all worth it.

@@ashleystanley4624 Beagles are absolutely lovely. 100% hound! And 3 months is super duper young, a bit of treat training on the leash is fine, but don't drive yourself crazy trying to do it all at once. Sometimes it's OK to put your puppy on a harness and let them explore and sniff to their heart's content.

I agree... My main issue with leash training videos is they never show a realistic walking situation. Like just trying to get from point A to point B in a straight line in maybe 5 minutes. It's always training grounds, parks etc. where they just walk back and forth a few feet with no other dogs, people or traffic in sight. I have honestly not found a single video on youtube that gives you tips on how to stop pulling on an actual walk, it's always basics like teach them to hang out with you, take 5 steps then stop and reward etc. Saying this as someone who loves the McCann content!
