You had better learn to tell a GTV from a Montreal. How did that happen. Your video suddenly switched cars.

The Muntz Jet looks like a practical family car, but it was an expensive hand-built luxury car. In the 1950's there were auto makers in the US that were able to make cars without tail fins and Dracula teeth on the front bumbers, but they all went out of business. A handful of good small firms fused into the dreadful AMC. Why was the idea of simple elegance abandoned in Detroit? There was something in the management of the big automakers that simply hated it. A family car had to look like a carnival float. From that era people remember cars like the 1959 Cadillac, but cars like the Muntz Jet are forgotten. Sales figures and the intensity of marketing campaigns have nothing to do with the quality of a car.

The 1949 Kurtis Sports Car was also available as a kit. IT WOULD LATER BECOME THE MUNTZ JET. The base price for the KSC in 1949 was $3,495, and with options it could cost up to $5,000. At the high end, it was approximately $1,000 more expensive than the then-new Jaguar XK120. You are asking an awful lot of the consumer to pass up an established, status brand.

Trust me Earl "madman" Muntz was interested in more than cars. Ever hear of Muntz TV's? So named because they took Muntz to fix. Like Crosley he built cars but I don't think he was ever serious about it. They are cool cars. As stated in the previous post it was cost prohibitive to sell hand built cars to the masses. Only a company like Chrevrolet, with GM behind it, could wait 3 years for a hand built car to take off. And why you hatin' on the fins?!?! They're cool. And you didn't mention dagmars as a '50's styling cue that was very pronounced on Cadillacs but we're on many other '50's cars. Love a good set of dagmars named after a voluptious TV personality of the '50's.

The Pacer should have faired much better than it did. AMC design the Pacer around the intention of equipping it with a new rotary engine drive line being developed by GM at that time. AMC was committed by its investment in Pacer to go forward when GMC decided to scrape its rotary engine development, leaving AMC totally screwed. After that turn of events, the Pacer was equipped with engines it was not designed to use, much too heavy and throwing off the handling balance of the vehicle. It is true that ongoing rotary engine development, mainly by Mazda, proved the concept too troublesome for wide usage and relatively uneconomical to operate, but that was not understood at the time the Pacer hit the road.

The engine is one thing, but little else mattered after putting out a car designed like that.

The interior of the "Pacer" was a sea of plastic, with very wide inner door panels, which negated the width of the exterior on the inside. Very poor aesthetics.

Regarding the Pacer, many smaller car compaines in the late '40s to the mid '50s WERE RUNNING OUT OF MONEY. Some merged to prolong their lives. They TRIED to swing for the fences to distinguish themselves. Those later models often were misses.

Don't think I've ever seen the Nash-Healy, but the classic Nash front end styling worked nicely. As for the Pacer, I think it was a ground-breaking design. A friend's dad had three of them!

An automobile confers a certain identity and status on the owner. After the mid 1930's, IMHO, it was very difficult to compete without mass production, economies of scale, large capitalization, and huge B-12 shots in the arm from lucrative American WWII defense contracts. I am referring to the low to mid-high end. Rolls Royce, Bentley, Morgan, etc. hand built luxury automibles are a Separate Category.

There are really two ways to go. An exclusive status brand (Jaguar, etc). Just drop the name Nikon or Mercedes now, no further explanation needed. The other way was common as mud. When GIs returning from WWII were building Hot Rods, they bought used Chevys & Fords & used readily available salvaged & new parts.

With the exception of the Alpha-Romeo Montreal, the outward design of the other cars, though novel, were somewhat ponderous compared to other cars in the same price range. This was the era of jet aircraft and the upcoming space race, when people sought sleek, futuristic designs.

The PACER had too large of a green house (top glass). It would not have been the first choice of 20 somethings. The trim around the headlights gave it a more bug eyed look. The underpowered & inefficient engine would have been unpopular.

These cars at best, should be forgotten. There’s really nothing cutting edge or extraordinary in or about them. I have seen #5, but not the others. I got into cars in the late 50’s, I’m 77. I almost bought the XK 120, but it needed too much work and parts were expensive. These cars were bought by those that could afford them, I could not then or now.

The Citroën DS (Goddess) was built from 1955 to 1975 and had many advanced features. 1.5 million units were sold. One actually helped save President Charles de Gualle's life. When an assassin's bullet took out a front tire, the driver lifted the tire of the car's dynamic suspension and drove away.

@Nedchilvs // The Day of the Jackel (movie 1973). In the aftermath of France allowing Algeria's independence, a group of resentful military veterans hire a professional assassin codenamed "Jackal" to kill President Charles de Gaulle.... COOL 😎 I had not seen it. I saw Leon The Profesional (1994) with Jean Reno.

When you are well to do, you can throw money at anything: Women, Art, Furnishings, Wine, Travel, Electronics, Camaras or obscure Automobiles. The average working stiff will choose a more practical solution for transportation. Since the 50s, Ford, GM, Chysler were in a HP competition, why would the average consumer want a small motor. Unless your a collector, esoteric, or a college professor in a tweed coat with felt elbow pads why chose different ?? Small convertibles are in a class of their own. Also its always a mistake to make an automobile on two continents. Sure co-design in both, but build in one place. Subarus are in a special class of safety & all wheel drive. A real egghead popular choice was the Volvo 240. Some opted for a Saab. But really obscure stuff ?? Plus a working stiff like me, how close is the dealership for repair & maintenance. What about repair costs. What about parts availability ??

A fellow I worked with many years ago in Canada had a BMW. He was convinced, that the parts must be made by Elves in the Black Forest, so expensive were they. Another fellow, whom I worked with from Europe, had to get rid of his BMW, when he came to Canada, due to the repair costs. He said, that in Europe, it was just a normal car. I suppose some of these cars are now produced in North America, which would reduce the prices.

To say SOME of these forgotten cars lacked SOME good ideas, features, or overall, had a "good" package that would have been WRONG. BUT YOU ONLY HAVE MAINLY 4 WAYS TO GO: 1) Insufficient model demand. 2) Suspicions about the company longevity or dealership access. I mean, I would have begged off the Mazda rotary with doubts (once it started). 3) Obvious shortcomings or reliability flaws. 4) Design Oddities. * RE: AMC Gremlin or Pacer, they had & now have fans & following; HOWEVER, Oddity, Insufficient Unit # sales, & Issues like Pacers heating up due to greenhouse effect, and power plant issues of economy & performance for both Pacer & Gremlin size of car. *** AND FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, didn't these companies ever hear about Styling focus & survey marketing groups ?? !! ??
