But more important, its a bullshit comment from him. At least what he added to it. In the context of ygo, yes. But saying "expect that in any game" is simply stupid. I hate to open that box again, but: magic. Commander. My decks will work 100% fine even 10 years later. That i can 100% support. Given that years old decklists can be run without the simplest of problems. In a gigantic eternal format. If you cant do that, your game just has design-flaws built in. Saying such things makes me angry. Yes, i am often times biased against modern ygo. But that stems from the fact that i have seen it work, playing magic side by side with it. The magic designers are simply geniuses, ygo´s designers on the other hand clearly are driven by some suits on top demanding changes to push new product. But a card-game can work nearly without power-creep. Its simply a choice.

@@maxchenmusterhausen5311 Unfortunately, this is becoming less true as of late, due to WotC eviscerating their R&D department in favor of selling new sets with two or three ridiculous cards sprinkled in and destroying other formats in the process. Formats that are equally-important to the health of the game. The new Boros chick. Winoda, I believe her name was? The "Joiner of Forces" chick. She is utterly destroying Standard, which is the primary gateway for new players. And don't get me started on Oko. What ISN'T that guy banned in? Commander and... uh... Yeah. Thankfully we have yet to see another Affinity fiasco or Eldrazi Winter, but it's only a matter of time at this rate. :/ Still more competent than Konami is in terms of... well, NOT turning the game on its head overnight to the extent that even the top decks are obsolete in the blink of an eye because the new mechanic is just that damn broken, rather than having said decks slowly and organically phased out by way of power creep. But at the same time WotC is utter ass when it comes to keeping the game semi-affordable with meaningful reprints. Especially when it comes to eternal formats. Seriously, don't get me started on Secret Lair Ultimate Edition. WotC'll learn from their mistakes eventually, though, if they want Magic to survive. It's only a matter of time before someone wises up and cleans shop. As for Commander, well... I hate to be that guy, but you're talking about a casual format, not a competitive one where people are far more cutthroat in their strategies. Sure cEDH exists, but it's effectively a different format. And even in Commander, power creep is a thing. You'll almost never see a Golgari deck with Putrefy in it anymore, for example, because Maelstrom Pulse exists among many other options. The difference is that said power creep is more organic, even in competitive formats like Modern and Legacy. It's not so much the deck that still runs 10 years later, but the strategy and spirit thereof, after some minor tweaks have been made in the rare occasion that a better card for said strategy replaces something that was once in your deck. Also, even in Commander, new decks and strategies will pop up and likely affect how you run your deck from 10 years ago, what you add or subtract, because Steve insists on giving you a hard time with that new Kaijuu commander from Return to Ikoria with a less-confusing Mutate, which has some nasty additions from Return to Return to Return to Return to Return to Return to Return to Ravnica, Gruul Empire of a Thousand Tribes. Or perhaps that new angel from Avacyn Re-Re-Restored just made his old Kaalia deck much deadlier and more consistent than you're used to because he swapped out a few more cards and added some nasties from ten sets ago that synergise with her to make it so and complement his new strategy.

I actually got back into this game in February and the first deck I learned with was Salamangreat. And when my cousin taught me how the deck worked and how quick the combos were, I was blown away and taken aback. Like “holy shit, I blinked once and I see a board with monsters and back row already!” After studying the game and the various decks and summoning mechanics, as well as trying out various decks and looking into the market place, I learned a bunch of new things I didn’t know about. Tournaments, an actual market place where cards fluctuate in price depending on various elements, what were considered meta and rogue and why, hand traps and how they’re used, what strategies are good at going first or second, win conditions, etc. It was a lot more complex than how the old form of Yugioh was, yet at the same time, it was exciting. Because of everything I learned, I helped my friends recreate their decks and I started to learn more about the subtle nuances of the game, like ratios, how to set up a strong draw engine, what cards synergize well with others, what combos can lead to an otk going second and what combos lead to a strong board going first. I feel like the game is a lot more fun because it has a higher skill ceiling but, I can understand why people dislike it. It’s too much to handle but, I love a good challenge

I don't think that when people say: "YGO was more popular back in the day."-they are talking about competetive players. For 99% of the players, especially those who watched the anime as a kid and got some cards from a starter deck and/or a couple of packs, going to a tournament was not even a thing at all. So tournaments aren't even something that people consider when they think about the "game" YGO...
@robledosarhento1567
@robledosarhento1567 5 жыл бұрын
Frankly, there's no reliable way to measure the "popularity" of a card game outside of tournament attendance. But I agree with you. Increased tournament numbers would tell us that there are more and more competitive players. However, it's also possible that at the same time, the franchise is losing popularity outside of the competitive crowd.

I remember school playground Yu-Gi-Oh where we all had our decks with us every day and found a corner outside away from the wind and just played. No one spent hundreds of dollars on special cards. It was booster packs, starter decks, and structure decks mixed together. I compared it to Anime Yu-Gi-Oh. That was the style. Decks didn't have synergy because when the only way to get cards is Christmas and your Birthday, rare cards became super rare and you played with the commons that you had.

The whole "non-target self protection" effect is best on boss monsters that require more resources to get out because you don't want all of that to go to waste. If the monster is easy to summon and recycle, then it's not as necessary cause the commitment is lower and its viable stems from utility and not just bulldozing.

nope we genuinely mean the card game all growing tournament numbers mean is that competitive yugioh is more popular than ever but the days when yugioh was at it's peak popularity it barely even had a competitive scene there's a fine line between competitive success and true success as competitive are not the only people you need playing the game to be successful that casual crowed has only continually withered away over the years with duel links being the biggest resurgence in casual play till they F*d that up by introducing the mech that made many casuals leave in the first place into duel links pendulums (i feel bad for players who hate pendulums and have no idea what links are cuz those are arguably even worse than pendulums)
@motokuchoma

5:00 re: your rogue deck comment. What is true for modern yugioh (and I think that's what these players are thinking about) is that a lot more cards are tailored to be fairly archetype-specific where old school yugioh often had very generically good cards (Raigeki, Harpie's Feather Duster, Summoned Skull etc.). If you're a "shoebox" player as you put it, just buying a single booster of a modern set generally isn't worth it, because even if you are lucky and pull a Pyro Phoenix for example, you don't really want to use it outside of a Salamangreat Deck, so the named archetype thing that became increasingly common even way back starting from the GX era gave the game a new feel to it, which I see as the "issue".

I think my problem with modern Yu-Gi-Oh is the severe lack of a card that lets you draw 20 cards. I think the game would be a lot healthier if this card is also a quickplay spell that can target either player. This would make for a vibrant and definitely not toxic meta to just draw your whole deck with 1 spell.
@Danny4bidden
@Danny4bidden 4 жыл бұрын
I'ma old school player,and i have to say that i ain't troubled by most of those things. The real problem with the actual game that is bothering me is: 1- You can't just simply go back to play. First,you need to throw away your old things,then you have to learn everything from the very beginning,after that,you have buy new cards,then you have to read every single detail about them,even if there are some cards that you know,cuz they do much more things now. And after learning how to use them,you still have to make sure they can do Synchro,Hand chain,meta,'pendullum',xyz,link,and even after that,you just find out that everything you just did is messed up. And with all the frustration,you almost give up on making a deck,cuz you're not having fun anymore. 2- You can't simply go back to play *with your friends*. When you finally manage to learn how to use everything,there is still the question,that everyone around you makes when you ask"Hey,wanna duel?". They always say:" didn't you read the BaNLiST!?". Yeah there's that. The fact that there is always a new banlist each month just makes you look at your deck and everyone around you saying that you are unable to duel. Then you have to take away the banlisted cards,buy new cards,re-build your entire deck,and most important thing,try not to give up. And when you finally managed to do everything above,you still have to know the rules about how to play a normal duel. And when you finally ask why is all that about,people just justify that"this is how it works on tournaments". I mean,goddangit,it's just a regular game,not a fricking tournament. anyways,that's the reason why i(at least i) don't actually like the new yugioh. It's not because it's hard, it's because it isn't that inviting.
@rastrisfrustreslosgomez544
@rastrisfrustreslosgomez544 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! The banlist is the shittiest thing about modern yugi. Back in the day when something was clearly nonsensical (last turn/emperor dragon/yata) it got banned and thats it. Now because something is dominant and people complain it gets the hammer of course after the set is no longer in sale and it stays there for a couple months maybe a year and if something is clearly nonsensical instead of banning that they fucking nerf it its soo damn annoying. For a while I tried to keep up with the banlist BS and after giving up nowadays I play with 3 copies of chiken games, 2 terramorphings, heavy storm and card destruction. I only play with 4 close friends of mine and they don't give a shit

I wonder if the difference is simply that we grew up, so we went from middle schoolers playing our equally oblivious friends in the playground or, if we did play other more devoted players, they understood you're a little kid and wouldn't push you to follow the rules, but now that we are all adults most people who would want to play the game will want to play it properly. Maybe these older teens and adults playing yugioh at the beginning were just as focused on banned cards and rules but we didn't get to experience.

It's a little funny to me that you cite tournaments having more attendance as YGO being more popular. I think when most people talk about YGO being popular, they don't think about tournaments at all. They're thinking about YGO being popular enough that a third the kids in your class brought decks to school, always watching the anime, etc which isn't really a thing anymore. None of the kids I know at the age when Yu-Gi-Oh was cool think Yu-Gi-Oh is cool. It's hard to get concrete data on that, though. How old are people who go to tournaments these days? Because my gut feeling is that a lot of those people are people in their mid twenties now who were kids when YuGiOh was a huge multimedia franchise.

I disagree. I think YuGiOh requires skill, but a lot of that skill, as with most TCGs, goes into deck builiding. So as the game progresses, and people get better and better, Konami has to print newer, stronger cards to keep the game fresh. It's a good business move, but it's also better for the game. In my opinion, if a card game existed where you could use ten year old strategies without anything new and still win, it wouldn't be a skill based game, it would just be a boring one. That's what I think at least.

About the rogue decks: You just need to see the deck reports of the last events. The "others" category participation is almost as big as all the meta deck combined, and I don't remember any other format where you had in top cut the same amount "others" decks as the most prevalent meta deck in the format. People likes to complain, but even if this format became a little stale with orcust/Sky/thunder/salads being the prevalent meta for over a year, it has been one of the most balanced metas in the history, there are a lot of competitive viable rogue decks that yeah, they may not win an YCS or similar, but they can totally get into the top cut

didn't play back in the day or now, just enjoy the talk about it. my probably wrong assumption based on viewing is that there's this magical god tier ash blossom card out there that's so prevelant in any deck that it's a mystery as to why it's not banned. like i said i don't know the game well, but it gets brought up so so often time and time again. is it the best counter-anything card? what's up with ash blossom? and if it's really that amazing, is that a good thing for the game? to always have to play around 1 card everyone's running? (if they really are all running it)

GutsCross Ash blossom’s effect reads as such: When a card or effect is activated that includes any of these effects (Quick Effect): You can discard this card; negate that effect. ● Add a card from the Deck to the hand. ● Special Summon from the Deck. ● Send a card from the Deck to the GY. You can only use this effect of "Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring" once per turn. It is a good card but obviously doesn’t negate everything. It used to be ran a lot more than it is now. Today I believe it’s mostly ran in side decks.

Jolly-lolita is great for the game as it gives much needed interaction. Now it's great on the basis that all players possess as many copies as they can run. If Jolly-lolita, thus success itself, hides behind a pay wall then only a small fraction of the playerbase can be succesfull. And before someone says "it's the same for any strong card" it's not because if you can't afford certain deck you can always play another one. Not the same case with jolly-lolita, everyone needs 3 copies no matter what they play. Same case was max-C and that one got semi limited, then limited, then banned

I’m not sure if this completely applies to trading card game, but when a fighting video game doesn’t get support from its publisher/sponsors for its fighting game, its popularity drop to nonexistent. This also works with other video games, such as moba and FPS games. Granted, those examples are video games. Would yu gi oh be just as popular today if Konami hadn’t injected funding into tournaments? Would we have more people in the past if Konami had put funding into it just the same now? As a current magic player and ex-Yugioh player. I think the power creep in the game was my big turn off, especially with the massive special summons with 0 limits on them. Too many things seem to float or need massive inherit protection to last on the board. The game needs to slow down, which while I agree even magic with set rotation has power creep, healer hawk vs suntail hawk, not a bad thing though unless you do go out of control with it like green has recently in standard. Set rotation still helps with controlling the pace of a standard game better where as eternal like formats will always speed up and go crazy. If I want to get back into yugioh, I just want to see the game slow down. Even if a deck like thunder dragons appeals to me or pet decks like counter fairies or spell counter magicians. Otherwise I think I will stick to legacy of the duelist for now to get my yugioh fix.

@@ewb8985 I don't think complexity is a bad thing per say, but I do think the larger power creep of how the game as gone in terms of pace and speed is why I haven't really felt great about more modern yugioh when I watch it play out. What doesn't help is how I feel like a lot of decks can turn into almost solitaire-like in terms of interactions because they move way too fast. SpriteRyu What do you mean by solitaire-like? There are plenty of interactions between decks these days.
