Rotaries with better seals and proper assembly can last a long time. Most people were expecting rotaries to accept the neglect and abuse that piston engines can take. Using better oils makes a world of difference

From what I understand, the main weakness seems to be chattering marks which eventually compromise its ability to hold a seal. I believe Mazda almost completely solved that problem by throwing their material science engineers at it, but it seems to have plagued the rotary engines from other manufacturers, and it's still not *completely* gone. Plus to properly oil them, you do have to burn a lot of oil - the engine just never gets a chance to reclaim the oil before the next combustion chamber slides over that film of oil - but that's expected, and you just have to make sure there's always oil. So yeah, they require more frequent rebuilds, but they're also a simpler design, so those rebuilds aren't as much of a big deal. On the whole, hell, they're a lot of power in a small package, and the trade-offs seem fine to me. I also love that you don't need expensive machining equipment to run the equivalent of hotter cams. Just bust out the dremel and get artistic on the ports! It's too bad Mazda aren't making them anymore, since anything rotary is getting bloody expensive now.

I just laughed at him. That rotary engine would never be able to even move an empty body around let alone a full load. A real truck needs low end torque, not insane high rpm power. Not to mention that Rotary powered Holden is so wrong, it should've been a 253 or 308 V-8.

The nsu ro80 and citroen gs share the same engine. The stupid helicopter Citroën made at great expense came shortly after the failure of the GS. Because failing with a car surely leads to a success with a flying machine, right? The poor thing, equipped with a triple rotor version of the engine, was never rated air worthy by French aviation authority. It flew 3 times, 30 minutes total at best... Also, the story of the Citroën rotary started with the m35 prototype, *sold* to a happy few fanboys customers. 200 were planned to be built be the number was never attained, interest didn't existed and the few made were reliability lemons. They were bought back to be destroyed. But this failure didn't prevent citroen to build the gs, which was a turd, and also had the same fate, most of the few sold were bought back and destroyed.
