+Tivona S. it's because seeing the same colour for a long time (in this case it's the negative photo) makes your nerves which made you see those colors tired, so when you see the black and white photo, the nerves that makes you see the opposite colors of the tired nerves made you see are put in place and you see the dog as its natural form

My art teacher has explained us the puppy one. Wanna hear it? When you look at certain colors for a while, your eyes get "tired" of them, and try to bring the *complementary color* in place. So, for example, you look at a paper that's half blue and half orange for a while, and switch to a white paper, the colors seem to switch places. So, when you look at the inverted-color puppy, and switch to a black-and-white one, your eyes *keep the shape of the puppy while placing the complementary colors in place.* This is why, when you move your eyes, the illusion fades - the shape of the puppy in your eyes no longer matches the screen. Did you stare at the dot the whole time even when the black and white picture came up? If you move your eyes away from the dot the illusion will break instantly.
