Just an FYI, firmer grip pressures promote high elbow ligament strain due to the engagement of the extensor muscles that attach to the UCL while throwing. The harder you grip, the more strain on those connections with higher muscle engagement through the throwing motion

Great vid as always - do you have any opinions on front foot toe pointing? I've heard you should have your toes pointing down on your leg lift instead of flexed up so the front foot is loose and relaxed instead of tensed up. Another possibility would be change-up grips for small hands. Only questions I can think of at the moment.

I think a lot of it is more personal and has to do with arm slot. My curveball is really nasty but I need to leave some room in my palm to release the ball. I do put lots of pressure with my middle finger. My slider is also dirty but the thing about the way I throw it is that I don’t put lots of pressure on it because I’m trying to get behind that ball instead of on top and around.

The hook was my closer when I played Babe Ruth Baseball in Arkansas. The hook requires a very tight grip on the laces, flip of the wrist without a lot of torque. It comes right at the batter then hooks in now depending on where the batter is standing, most of the time the batter will jump out the batter's box when the ball is coming at them then it hooks in. This depends on the amount of spin from the wrist to determine how much hook a pitcher wants. It's all in the grip and wrist.

@jackiesee1907

Coach John - the difference between the 2-seam and the sinker comes down to rotational axis, correct? The 2-seam has roughly 1-7 backspin, whereas the sinker has more like 2-8 backspin? Why is it that by definition the sinker has arm-side movement. Would it be possible to throw a glove-side movement sinker by throwing A cutter with 10-5 backspin?

The fork ball can be a give away pitch. So what I would do when I used to pitch was for every pitch I would fiddle with the ball in my glove to make it look like I was throwing a fork ball change up only to throw either a fastball or a different off-speed pitch.

rjclark730 LOL gotta make sure “Blue” isn’t watching 🤣 I think touching the hat is just a habit. Too hard to hide a substance on the hat (if that’s what you’re implying). Not saying it isn’t done but most guys I’ve seen have “it” on their glove side wrist.

I did not agree with how you explained how to throw a change up. Every pitch is done with the wrist think fast you want to pop the wrist. However with a change up which I threw the force style change up or football grip change up. So when you throw the change up you want to lock your wrist while trying to create as much back spin as possible. Best change there is if you throw it right.
@themonkey5918

I always pull down as my release amd was successful with it. Like closing a window with a downwards motion
@dagruddicker22
@dagruddicker22 4 жыл бұрын
@@themonkey5918 the change up and "fork ball" my split finger (not a split finger fastball) worked well with good wrist action. Even the knuckle ball worked well with good wrist action. I think back spin vs locked wrist Back spin wins to get more movement and difference in interrupting batters timing because he sees or thinks fastball from so much spin. Sinker, Tom House and Nolan Ryan taught to throw an overhand curve for a sinker with alot of back spin that fooled hitters. It saved his arm for a long career. The sinker he teaches is what Fernando Valenzuela throws as a screw ball, which is amazing but hard on arms.
