I'm a Korean subscriber and this is incredible. Many native speakers on KZbin just try to say slowly or articulate words for foreigners. But Hadar probably is the only KZbinr who analysed Korean sound and structure to make this video. It's not just copying the sound apparently, Koreans should catch English's rhythm too.

This is probably the most in depth analysis of English speaking Koreans and challenges they face while learning. I’ve always noticed the devoicing among Koreans (myself having that same problem unknowingly) and you really explained it most clear way WHY it was happening.

As a Japanese and English speaker who is trying to learn Korean, I was so confused with their “ㄹ” (r/l). In videos for Japanese speakers ㄹ is written as Japanese ra ri ru re ro (tap r) which is not always accurate. In videos for English speakers it happens so many times when ㄹ is written as L but the audio is pronounced as tap R. This video helped me to understand what was going on, although it must’ve not been the intention of the video haha. To Japanese speakers, tap R and English R sound so much more different than tap R and L do and it often happens their brain overcompensate with English R when trying to speak English. I imagine the same might be happening to Korean speakers. At this point I wish we had two different Rs in alphabet, one for tap R and one for English R. I don’t understand why we are supposed to differentiate L and R, when we categorize tap R and English R the same (which again sound so different from each other).

as french who learn korean, ㄹ isn't r or l, it's between r and l, i know because it's not our french or english way to pronounce r or l.

For more information, we, Koreans don't put vowel 'ㅜ(u)' like you said 'kri su ma su'. We have vowel sound 'ㅡ' which doesn't exist in English. Maybe that's why you categorize it as u. Koreans understand /s/ sound as one syllable consisted with consonant 'ㅅ' and vowel 'ㅡ'. So Koreans can make sound like /s/, but as a separate syllable like you said.

As a Korean speaker, it is hard to distinguish between 'e' sound and 'i' sound like in 'live' and 'leave' or in 'beach' and 'bitch' (sorry for using a curse word but it really disrupts me whenever I have to say a word 'beach' instead of the other 😭) Now that I watched your video, I figured the reason why I gets confused is quite relevant to the difference between 's' and 'sh' sound I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds it challenging to pronounce the words containing either 'e' or 'i' sound correctly Anyway thanks for sharing your knowledge and resources!

Great observation. Though we would say Bak rather than bagu (for bag). K is one of the consonants that can come at the end, so we simply replace g with k. The same happens with Rib for instance (Rip rather than Ribu).

My problem is voiced consonants B D G TH are recognized as 'P' 'T' 'K' 'T or N', Dark L sound recognized as "oh sound" or 'r' sound, article word 'a' recognized as 'or' or 'the' words(can't pronounce schwa's solo version), 'The' of front sentence recognized as anything different on Google live tranlate or Chat GPT. When I tried a line "Oh, do they support a wide foot?", it becomes "Oh, Today's portal white food" or "Oh, Today's support or white food". If you can train and make Koreans' VOT(voiced on set time) at 'B','D','G','TH' be minus, you become a language legend.

Some Koreans who study English in non native English speaking countries seems to have different or high expectations. I wonder why some Koreans who study English in the Philippines tend to blame their tutors for incorrect pronunciation. First of all, Koreans who study in the Philippines should first decide what is their goal? Do they want to get the American accent or get the basic pronunciation first. If they want to get the native English speaking accent, its best that they study English in those native English countries. I myself took a long time to learn English. I had to fix my pronunciation first, then grammar, listening, practice conversational English and only after that i get to decide which accent because i really like British accent. See, learning English cannot be completed in 6 months time. Even if i can do conversational English now i still look for English lessons online. This is one of the best i've seen. So thanks very much Hadar!

The only objection I have is that Hadar speaks about letters using the term 'sounds'. L and R are letters, but /l/ and /r/ are sounds. So, THEORETICALLY (not technically), Korean language has these sounds. It just has one letter for both of them. For Koreans it is not a problem as that letter is always pronounced /l/ or /r/ in certain positions. So clarity is maintained.

kurismasu -- sounds like Japanese. Maybe you seem to confuse Japanese-style English pronunciation with Korean-style one in some senses. But, in other senses, you're absolutely right and helpful!

I have been and I will always be your big fan, Hadar :) (One trivial fact: 'Bag' would usually be pronounced "ppaek" instead of "ba-gu". This is K pop effect.. Awesome... It’s right how you describe about all those things especially adding vowels, street and different syllable structure also light accent of consonant sound. But also it’s TOUNGE displacement. Koreans use lots of tongue when Americans don’t use lots of tongue. Usually tip of American tongue is sticked behind of the lower front teeth and back is flat. We are not. That makes a loooot of difference.

I suppose you should teach Koreans and Japanese to use the most close sounds to /l/ and /r/ that they have în their languages. As beginners. If they want to use more advanced English pronunciation, only then teach the English /r/ or even the tapped/flapped /r/.

Korean english education system is absurd and uselss spending of time for students. It is a big big problem. Korean English is mostly dumb and deaf and strictly it is not language course. Students are forced to learn English language without asking their will or preferences. It's government's absurd foreign language education policy only for the nation's profits. If possible, Compulsory language course should be abolished. Every students have a right to select various foreign language course according to their preferences. If they don't want, they don't have to.
