One big challenge when it comes to puppy training is trying to figure out when and where you should be doing the training! You have a puppy who's FULL of energy and because you want to be giving them the best start possible, you try to work on some of your puppy skills training. But your puppy is still so full of energy that you spend most of the time trying to get them to focus on you... What if there were a few simple exercises that you could do anywhere that would not only teach your puppy to listen to you, but also burn off all of that extra energy?! Working in a quiet, controlled environment is a great way to ensure some success, it’s also a space that you have access to all of the time. Enjoy this episode of Living Room Lessons!

exactly. It is quite clear these puppies have done this before. My puppy has NO interest in the other object for the "give" command..... unless it is a piece of sausage - and when playing tug of war - there is NO place for having sausage in the other hand - the excitement will cause a huge issue with getting that treat.

Thanks for all the tips. This is so helpful. I love the peanut butter on the spoon idea. My friends puppy doesn't like Peanut butter but loves that cheese in a can. She gets the low sodium kind and smears that on a spoon now to get her puppy used to getting her nails trimmed. Once that spoon comes out that puppy gets so excited 😆. I never seen a dog so excited over a nail trim before but whatever works.

If I’m going to laundry or clean another room, I grab his Place and plop it down where he can watch. Very nice job. My only input would be to try and use two toys which are the same. Although dogs will still prefer one over the other, the more similar they are, the easier it is to entice the dog off the toy they are possessing. Once again, McCann put together a fantastic video the average dog owner can follow.

I kind of hate the KZbin format. Everyone shows videos with such successful dogs that make it look easy, you'll never convince me they haven't had a little priming before the camera was turned on, or that an excessive amount of editing wasn't done to make it look easy. Show me some struggles and how to handle them rather than showing me the end result. I'm having an issue with leash training and no one has mentioned it anywhere. When I put the leash on my pup, she hates it. She freaks out and starts yelping like someone is beating her. Good luck finding answers to a problem like that from youtube
@bonmarie795
@bonmarie795 2 жыл бұрын
@@fisharepeopletoo9653I understand your frustration! I one adopted a dog that had been tied to a tree since she was a puppy. The collar had begun embedding into her neck when she was brought to the rescue center. They said she was about a year old & for obvious reasons had developed several fear issues. We worked on building trust first. Eventually I introduced a collar by letting her sniff & explore. She was rewarded for doing simply that. Over & over for days...Next I used a soft satin ribbon along with the collar, & again rewards for any acknowledgment. Eventually I gently held the ribbon around her neck for only a few seconds; reward, reward, reward. After a few days she was comfortable enough for me to loosely tie the ribbon on & play for a few minutes. We also continued the collar desensitizing while she wore the ribbon. Next was to swap the ribbon for the collar & repeat the above training until I could attach the leash without stress. (Introduced leash the same way) We worked s l o w l y through this process & three weeks later she was happy to have her new comfy collar on, play & explore freely around the house dragging the leash along. The final step was learning to walk with the leash, & she was confident enough at this stage! Best of luck with your dog's training

It's a good idea to train at pup's feeding time. This way, you can use pup's kibble, slow down the eating process, & track how much your pup is eating. It also allows for more, "high value" treats for other training sessions. Have fun with Bessie & Pip!

When I am leaving my 12 week pup for an hour or two, he will be in a crate. But before that we play tug or fetch or go for a puppy walk to tire him and also to go potty. Then he goes in crate with a chew treat (I found one made of dried sweet potato and chicken). He is tired and like a human toddler will cry about going to bed for a nap but after a few minutes he stops complaining and goes to sleep. At any rate when I return he is quiet and snoozing peacefully.

@christygraber7547

You might have already gotten an answer if you watched other videos from them, but they always keep what they call a "house line" (a nylon leash with the handle cut off usually, or even just a nylon rope) on their puppy when outside of their crate. It allows for easier handling when you need to stop the pup from doing something or go to grab them, especially for pups that nip because if you reach in to try to grab their collar, it is a higher chance of them nipping, and it is also very inconvenient. Whereas with the leash, or house line, they can use that to pull the puppy away from a situation, guide them, and also get them in nice and close for better control when going to handle. I hope that helps :)

My experience with puppies is that they need to be about 11 weeks old before they can "Hold it" through the night. I wrote a longer reply to " TDOT" above with more details on pee/poo training. In addition to that, my only advice is to keep the potty pads near the door so that you can gradually move the pads outside (when they figure out that you want them to pee/poo on the pad). That also trains them (and you) to go toward the door when it's time to go pee/poo. It will only take a couple of successful pee/poos outside before you no longer have to have the pad out there in the pee/poo spot.

Question how are you sure that he's not getting tired from eating food just like most animals do I feel like that's not enough exercise to make any sort of puppy tired It is a serious question I am about to be a new dog owner

Whenever there is a treat pause for my puppy she will start barking and whining at me. Is there a way to prevent this?

Wait patiently until your puppy stops vocalizing. Be very neutral and boring, no speaking, no eye contact. Just that split second when they are quiet immediately say yes and give the treat. Timing is very important.

I just learned about Bloat. Is it wise to give so many treats at one time? Im so afraid since I heard of bloat.
@luciecampbell8215
@luciecampbell8215 2 жыл бұрын
bloat is very scary but it's only really an issue with large dogs with barrel chests and the risk is really only with lots of food or water then vigorus exercise, short training sessions with treats should cause bloat so i wouldn't worry

Instructor Carol here. I used Smooch’s kibble during this video. I start with my pup in a vary low distraction environment so in most cases kibble has enough value. Plus a healthy option. Then I feed my pup a little less on the meal before or after.

Looks like a border collie. I have a border/rough collie mix. Collies in general are super smart. Mines could sit, lie down, stay, roll over etc etc by ten, eleven weeks, slept all night and was toilet trained by twelve weeks. Not every dog can achieve this. Some are not as bright, too easily distracted, lazy or full of devilment 😂, I just got lucky, though he does have his moments 🤭. They love to dig , particularly stuff you’ve just planted 😖

I’ve been doing the settle technique by holding the collar with my 13 weeks old puppy and it doesn’t work, she just lies down and tries roll over to bite me. It seems to make her more crazy. Help. She’s pretty good when my sons at school but when he’s home I cannot let go of her leash the whole time she’s out of her crate or she’s bolts for him. He’s developing a fear of her

Oh my word.... SAME! My 13 week old puppy does the same. He is FINE if I grab his collar or harness when he is NOT doing something wrong... he doesn't care a bit. I have done the "grab the collar - yes - release-reward" thing a million times. He is GREAT with grabbing the collar/harness.... UNLESS he needs to settle. In THOSE moments - he turns his head to bite my hand or arm when I grab it.
