5 Reasons I Love My Stove Top Pressure Cooker

I didn't really do a good job keeping my list numbered and concise in the video so here are my 5 reasons I love my stove top pressure cooker
1 There is no electronic components or buttons to fail, keep it simple
2 It can be removed from the heat for faster depressurizing and cooling. I have also noticed that the Instant Pot seems to take forever to come up to pressure. The heating element is just not as hot as my stove. Also, I have no science to prove this and maybe I am crazy but I have watched plenty or electric pressure cooker videos and recipes and I am always shocked at how long the recipe says to cook under pressure. I generally cook thing 8-12 minutes, maybe 20-25 for a large roast or something. Hip Pressure Cooking.com mentions that stovetop pressure cookers cook food 3 times faster than in a regular pot while electric pressure cookers cook food 2 times faster than a regular pot. I don't really understand how that works if both pots are reaching the same pressure (8-15 psi) but it makes sense that the recipes that I am seeing are calling for much longer cook times. www.hippressurecooking.com/th...
3 There is much less of a learning curve because you already know your stove.
4 Very easy to clean, fully submersible, stainless steel easy to maintain. I think the lid is easier to clean, easier to get the seal in and out than the Instant Pot
5 Regular pot handles make it easier to move, pour, and keep steady while stirring. I have noticed the liner of the Instant Pot spins around when stirring which makes it harder to deglaze. But its ok because I have yet to actually get the instant pot to properly brown. It just doesnt get hot enough.
Pressure cooker recipe playlist • Corned Beef and Cabbag...
Nice Stove Top Pressure Cookers ( look for 2 pressure settings, stainless steel pot, 6-8 qt)
My model is called Fagor Express (not Rapid Express) the closest model still made is called Fagor Duo amzn.to/2v7wGOE
Innova, Cayenne amzn.to/2n5wjzm and Helix amzn.to/2McrvDB all have 2 pressure settings and would be a good choice
Other brands I would trust Presto, Tfal amzn.to/2valMrc
if you want the most budget friendly I would look into getting a older jiggler type presto, for as little as $25-35. I would probably not get a used one from a thrift store if you are a newbie, but an older presto would just need a careful inspection, a fresh gasket and would be a workhorse.
This is so much of me talking about my love for pressure cookers. Did you make it to the end? Are you a pressure cooker lover too or do you think I need a new hobby. Whats your favorite thing to make in a pressure cooker? I love soup, chili, beans, hard veggies like winter squash or potatoes, hard boiled eggs, roasts, grains, pork butt, short ribs, tamales everything everything, everythiiiiiiiing!

Aside from being able to reach a full 15 psi, there's one more thing that a stovetop pressure can do that an electric pressure cooker cannot. That is a cold water release. This is helpful when you've got starchy foods that will foam up and blow through the pressure valve if you quick release.

Woo Hoo Woo Hoo!!! I’m doing my happy dance 💃. 😀 I am so happy to see your video, just this morning I was looking for stovetop vids on pressure cooking. I’ve had my Cooker for about 10 or 11 years & I’ve only done a few different things consistently with it, been kind of intimated by it. Anyway I have been looking at the electric ones also the past couple of weeks getting kind of excited about trying one of those. However I was feeling guilty that I haven’t used my present one enough to necessarily justify the purchase... So last night I stepped out of my comfort zone & did a frozen pot roast dinner & it was AMAZING! 😁 I am super jazzed about using my present one & want an electric one as well, I like the idea of not have to “babysit” a pot if I have other things going on & I am looking forward to things like yogurt. Best of both worlds I think & I will use BOTH. But there simply aren’t enough videos on the stovetop version for dummies that take the fear & intimidation out of the experience. So thanks for the video!

Presto 6 qt stainless steel pressure cooker and a portable induction stove, buy the cheap meats and mixed (mutton, beef, oxtail etc) bones. Cook for an hour let the pressure come down naturally. I eat a keto diet so separate meat into containers and bone/meat broth into another. I might cook my veggies in the broth.I have a 2 liter Hawkins pressure cooker that I cook hard boiled eggs for 2 mins, 5 min rest and they peel perfectly. Also cook salmon in 2 mins, cooked perfectly. I purchased an i-pot and returned it, nothing compares in time and ease of use as the stove top PC (they truly get to 15# of pressure as compared to 10-12 #). In this day and age of food borne illnesses nothing does a better job of destroying these pathogens than a good ol tried and true Stove Top Pressure Cooker!

I've spent the last few days thinking about buying a instant pot duo, then I realised i'd mainly use it for the pressure cooker and rice cooker function to meal prep. I've also been thinking recently that I need a stock pot. So instead I ordered a 7 litre stovetop pressure cooker that comes with an additional glass lid to use as a normal pot that I can use to cook rice and make stock. Will be able to hang it on my wall, nice and easy.

Thank you for this! I borrowed my parents electric pressure cooker after hearing so many great things about them and was disappointed. I thought the whole process took a long time and while the food was good, it was difficult to clean properly...too many parts to it. I like the idea of pressure cooking, but that experience really turned me off. The stove top cooker looks much easier to take care of and easier to store. I think I'll try again with the stove top version. I'm interested to see what you think of the electric one. BTW, sorry you didn't care for the slow cooker. I have three and use them constantly. I even keep one out permanently during the school year. I probably feel about my slow cooker the way you feel about your pressure cooker! :)

Oooo looking forward to your comparisons! I’ve had/have all three! .... all have their pros & cons... i like the stove top pressure cooker but I tend not to want to leave it alone where I’m comfortable walking away from the Instant Pot for a bit. I did find though that I tend to use the manual setting on the Instant Pot no matter how many pre-sets there are! As far as slow cooking, I prefer my good ole fashion “Crock Pot” ...(having one now which sautés as well is a big plus)....the Instant Pot doesn’t seem to do the same job in my view. I look forward to your journey ... thanks for sharing! 😃

Prefer a stovetop pressure cooker any day! A plug in electric cooker will not work in a power outage or when camping. A stovetop cooker can be used over a campfire, camping stove, on a boat, over any propane, butane, or alcohol fueled stove. Far more versatile!

My Presto stovetop PC manual says to subtract 35% from the time of a normal recipe in order to convert it to a PC recipe. The manual has info about how much liquid to use + other helpful hints. So far, I’ve only used the recipes in the manual, but I might try converting regular recipes one day.

I have a Fagor Rapida stove top set (a 4 and 8 qt pot, one glass lid and one pressure lid, interchangeable with either pot). I am comfortable with this but have been considering an Instant Pot or similar lately. The big difference with most electric PCs is that they do not come up to the full 15 psi that the stove-top models do, so cooking timing will be different for the two different units. I think there is a mathematical calculation you can do to convert one to the other, but I don't know what it is. The only reason I am considering an IP at this point is to make yogurt, but I'm still looking into how to best do that. I'd rather not add another appliance to my kitchen if I don't need to.

I have both types of pressure cookers. I really like the stovetop pressure cookers but the electrics are very convenient and I think the convenience aspect is what has made them so popular. The electrics don't require so much babysitting as the stovetop in my opinion. My only complaint with my stovetop unit is that it is a cheap model ( jiggler type) that has a poorly designed rubber overpressure plug and if I am not careful when I wash the lid the plug falls out. I have had to buy a new plug twice now. I know the answer is to buy a better pc. It is true that the electrics don't develop 15psi as the stovetops do, but in the comparisons that I have seen that doesn't really translate to a huge difference in cooking times. It is true that the stovetops probably take a little more watching than an electric but if you are in the house cooking a meal you are going to be nearby anyway. Even using the stovetop you are not required to spend every minute standing by your stovetop. If it takes 30 minutes to cook, you are allowed to step away and do other things. There seems to be some safety concerns about the stovetops, but the stovetops of today have multiple safety devices to prevent any accidents, even my cheapie, and that doesn't concern me. Some of the stovetops that I have looked at, including the Fagor have safety mechanisms that seem very similar to those in the electrics.

I have a stove top pressure cooker and an electric pc, although not an instant pot. I like them both but prefer my stove top model. I can saute in my stove top model and control the cooking temp easier than my electric model and I think the pressure is higher in my stove top. I cook on an electric stove and I was concerned that it would be hard to control the cooking temp on the stove top, but I found that hasn't been a problem. To me, the major advantage of an electric pc is that it is convenient and doesn't require as much attention as the stove top, and in some situations it is handy to put food in to the electric pressure cooker and pretty much forget about it until it is done. I also like the fact that the electric has some of the characteristics of a slow cooker where the food will go in to the warm mode if need be.

The instruction for my pressure cooker recommended not cooking rice. The starch can very easily clog the vent. If you attempt you should keep the pressure JUST below hissing, or once it comes to pressure turn off the heat and use residual heat to continue to cook the rice. Depending on the amount of rice it may or may not stay under pressure long enough to fully cook. I would also not use the pressure release valve to release excess pressure (again, to keep the starch from clogging the vent). You can put the pot under running water to cool the pot and release the pressure. In the end it seems easier to use an open pot on the stove top, or rice cooker.

Agreed, agreed, agreed. I miss the set & forget feature of IP but don't trust the electronics of modern kitchen gadgets. I use my pots (a small Duromatic and a large Mirro) for batch cooking and nearly all the things you listed - plus tripe and various animal feet for MENUDO and other rich soups. Here is a thought: I have - and use extensively - a NuWave Induction Cooktop. With my new 1800 Watt Pic I SHOULD be able to use my new Fagor SS Helix (I think it is now a Zavor EZLock) to Pressure Cook with Induction. Induction Cooktops should be perfect for pressure cooking (and crockpot cooking with the PIP techniques. They can get VERY hot for Searing, the temperatures can be set in 5* increments, times can be set in minutes up to 100 minutes, and programs can be set up in Memory for particular recipes and dishes. When it's off, it is OFF, no heat anywhere. A cook can set and forget these with the right stove top PC - or he can use his PC on any other stove. How cool is that? Trouble is, pressure cooking with Induction is DIFFERENT - because of the way it heats up only on the bottom. Can be done, though there is not much written about it. Am experimenting, but would LOVE to see some videos about it.

I guess it depends on the style of pressure cooker. On my Fagor the pressure valve turns past the quick release and then lifts off. From there there is the stem that you can clean simply by poking a toothpick into. The gasket slips out and hand wash as any normal pot lid. I rinse and visually inspect my valve stem each time I was it but it has never been blocked so I never really need to clean it beyond a soapy rag and rinse.

Hi. Will you please reveal the specific model for your Fagor? I love it!

I have a Fagor -- I think it's a Stainless 6Q model -- it says "Express" in the model name -- which is perhaps out of date. Back to the reason I'm writing you: I'm thinking that the fact that you can carry the Fagor Stovetop to the sink and douse it with cold water to bring the temperature down quickly is a tremendous advantage (over the electric types where you have to wait [I hear] up to 30 minutes for the pressure to come down naturally) is a Big Plus for the Stovetop types that we have! Have you ever used this feature? How is it working for you? My situation is that my Fagor has set in storage in my small kitchen for over 10 years, and I forgot everything I once knew about pressure cooking. However, I am now concerned about "Bacillus cereus" in rice -- which, if you read enough, says that rice, after cooking & stored at room temperature, can cause these little buggers to become active; but that temperatures of 250 degrees F can kill them during cooking -- hence my renewed interest. OMG -- this post is too long! Anyway: your thoughts, please? Thank You!!!!! It's been 5 years -- I hope your marriage has lasted & been fruitful!

My mother used an older presto pressure cooker that had no pressure release and she would run the faucet over the side of the cooker to bring the pressure down. I do not find it necessary with my fagor because there is a pressure "quick release". Getting the pot off a hit burner does allow it to cool incredibly fast compared to electric. I'm not familiar with B.cereus but rice in pressure cookers can be difficult. The starchy liquid can clog the vent. It can also spray starchy mist making a mess. I do cook rice in my electric pressure cooker because it has a thermostat and heat just to pressure instead of hissing to release excess pressure.

@@KatieCooksandCrafts Since I posted, I've used mine twice now for rice. it takes a bit longer to make fluffy rice than the "3-6 minutes" suggested in the manual. but mine is a newer model -- it has a pressure release valve, and selector for 2 pressure levels. Everything seems to work fine -- perhaps I don't need an Instant Pot! Running cold water over the my pot releases pressure in just a few seconds. I have not tried beans yet. Mine also has a separate clear cover; so I can see if/when foam develops before I put on the pressure-lid! I'm excited about now using it for rice & beans! Using the cold water pressure release method, there would perhaps not be much to clog the vents. I tried cooking beans in my Rice Cooker -- wow-- what a mess that make -- the foam went EVERYWHERE!! (No pressure or valves at all on the rice cooker) I think my Fagor gives me more control of the entire process; plus has the potential to kill the rice bacteria at 250 F and 15psi. Thoughts?

Thank you for the video. I have been pressure cooking for many years and have several electric and stovetop pressure cookers in various sizes. I use my induction compatible stovetop pressure cookers on an induction cooktop that comes with a timer. It is really awesome and I don't have to babysit it, because it turns off automatically when the time has elasped. So I am getting one of the benefits of an electric pressure cooker. For me, stovetop just works best. Not too many parts to clean and it comes to pressure much much faster than the electric pressure cooker. I recently purchased a Prestige Alpha Deluxe stovetop pressure cooker in 3L, for small meals. I am not affiliated with the company but just absolutely love how it cooks! It is an Indian brand, and I almost did not buy it because I thought that I had to count "whistles" or the times that steam releases from the pressure regulator, to indicate when the food is done. Not so; I just lower the heat and set my induction cooktop timer when it fully reaches pressure. The Induction cooktop turns off automatically when the time is up. I just love my stovetop pressure cookers, and no babysitting!

I agree with you, but I find most American home recipes tend to be bland, or kind of cave man dinners, no finnese and without additional flavourings. There are very few UK vids out there, but I love using my stove top. With a few times experimenting you can create almost any meal that a casserole would normally do. I batch cook a standard savoury mince and use it to what I want in the future from the freezer, be it chilli or bolognese, etc. I cook soups with lentils, vegetables, -chicken pieces, in 10 mins, gammon in 25mns. Pork and beans in 20 mins.. with the knowledge of trial and error the stove top does become a necessary part of family cooking... must do some vids from the UK. Some people are too careful with them, dont let the cooker steam to hard, and get to know it.

I don't have the scientific data to back me up but I do know gas is much cheaper to use where we live than electricity. I'd bet the stove top is much less to cook the same meal than an instant pot.

Electric pressure cookers can only be timed in increments of one whole minute. One whole minute in a pressure cooker is a long time. Compare that with a stove top pressure cooker that can be timed in increments of one second, which is a tremendous advantage. Also, there is a drain hole in the bottom or your Instant Pot that drains unimpeded straight through the lower electrical compartment to finally drain out the bottom vents. I'd advise you to open the bottom to inspect what nasty growths have developed because of this. Instant Pot engineers knew what they were doing by securing the bottom panel by just one screw, making it simple and easy for consumers to open it, think about that. They invite you to expose the electrical guts of this thing. Years ago, my Instant Pot kept shorting out, so I investigated the bottom electrical compartment, and found this nightmarish thing, like green slime, but brown, bridging between two electrical components an inch apart, how it jumped from one to the other, I have no idea, could there be intelligence sparked by the electricity? By the way, you need a flashlight to follow the path of the drain hole, that's a pro-tip for ya
