Today I wanted to share with you some thoughts based on an article that I came across which was titled '5 clear cut reasons NOT to study biomedical science' - since I studied biomed before starting medical school, I wanted to go through the misconceptions in the article and have a discussion about some of the points mentioned! as always, feel free to share your views and experiences below!

Biomed is CHALLENGING. I'm on a placement year now, so I completed my second year. Second year was full of really demanding assessments like lab report, essay, etc. The depth of the topics seems daunting at points, that being said I feel I gain a lot of skills I could use in future career (which I'm still confused about and try to figure out). Great video and eye-opening for biomed prospects 💜

@@kmasouss8449 Big time! There are many routes available as I'm aware, Atousa talked about some in her videos as well. You could have a look on websites like gradcracker or prospects for example. Many companies offer training contracts or graduate programmes (finance, law, etc...)

@@kmasouss8449 if you're only in first year, there's no shame in switching, but like atousa said, every degree comes with it's own issues! Stick it out! trust me, you can do anything once you finish your first degree! Don't let the article demotivate you 😉 the degree itself gets easier the more you progress!

I came across the same article a few months ago! (Gh**p*). I also felt a cringe! I imagined this was a person who aimed for the NHS (HCPC, IBMS stuff) and felt frustrated. I'm a second year biomed student .the course is definitely not easy. We have so many lectures, labs (more last year due to pandemic) and coursework/lab report. we read scientific articles and analyze them. We do statistics and use software such as Jamovi and spss. it is definitely not useless although some modules are not to my liking such as genetics. However, biochemistry module, physiology and immunology module is very interesting.

If you wish to go into biomedical research area, then absolutely pick biomedical because, it's broader and by the time you finish Undergrad, you would've done a whole range of subjects. You will very likely find a lot of things you're interested in, you would also have a whole skill set. Biomedical science is vast. You do everything from biology to chemistry to math along with lab work.

Uhhh I mean , with biomedical science in undergrad I am able to knock out medical school pre requisites, nursing courses don’t meet their pre requisites , you’d need to spend around 2 years after college knocking out courses such as chem 1,2 physics 1,2 orgo 1 , 2

Love the viewpoints! The video was super fair and is a nice contrast to the article! You did such a good job of elaborating on alot of the points I was trying to get across! Been a massive fan for a while so meant a lot when i stumbled across this today! Read my other articles, most are much more positive because biomed is a good degree! Biochemistry is notoriously one of the worst degrees for employability, that article gave horrible advice on that point. Either do straight chemistry to work in the industry, or do biomed/medicine to work in research eventually.

Isn't biochem often integrated along with biotech? At least here in Belgium the major is called 'Biochem AND Biotech'. Employability is good around here, but then again Belgium is very dense in biotech, all colours!

@@Biomeducated No, not the case here in the States. Biochem is its own degree, which usually focuses one towards advance studies in genomics, nutrition, etc.

Avoid The biomedical sciences unless you 'know' your going into the medical profession and are willing to get into 200k debt for it.

200k in debt? Most MS's I've seen cost a little over 30K for the degree, can be done online, and you're likely to get a gig with at least $60k/yr occupation afterwards. I understand that you might have to take out loans to live while working part-time to make ends meet, but $200k worth of debt? It's not Med School, right? Maybe I'm misunderstanding something.

​@@Ronnock According to the Foundation for Research and Equal Opportunity a whopping 31% of biological science graduates with a BS degree have a Negative Return on investment. that means almost 1/3 of graduates would have been been better off financially NOT going to college... same study found that only Theology and art majors had it worse .in other words its the 3rd worst degree in terms of a ROI... And according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York a whopping >60% of biology graduates have at least a masters degree. 4th highest of all majors but still make less then an art history and a communications major that only have a BS degree...the same study also found that currently an astonishing 48.6% of biology graduates (with 60%ms/40%bs in hand) are Underemployed. meaning that almost1/2 of these graduates work in jobs that DONT even need a degree.. So what iImeant to say is that prospective students need to be prepared to get into at least 200k in debt for medical school( MD, pharmacy, optometry, dentistry..)as its the only viable option to get a decent ROI. those that staying at a BS and MS level in the biological science field are likely to be worse off financially and mentality .. especially now with most economies heading into recession. mass layoffs in Pharma and biotech are likely to come resulting in even fewer opportunities and lower salaries are coming for this industry. According to the NIH own website a graduates with a PHDs in biology with 5 years of experience is only expected to makes 60k/year... Job prospects are bleak and getting bleaker. even technological advancement has not been able to stop the decline . the term 'Erooms law" was even coined in the 1980 to describe this phenomenon in the sciences.. SO its no wonder that almost 40% of graduates in Biology are clinically depressed. This is according to a recent study by Nature magazine.. An if that's not bad enough. There is also the Reproducibility crisis in the life sciences. An estimated >60% of biomedical research studies can NOT be repeated. I'm not sure how its still called science if no one can repeat the experiments. sounds more like a scam to me. Final point I like to make is that all this has created a work environment that is cut throat and toxic compared to other industries . in science today one either " Publishes or Perishes" From the looks of it, More are publishing useless research( on the backs of tax payers) while perishing in their depression. hopefully something changes. But i doubt it . Universities have huge incentives to continue to churning out BS, MS and PHDs in biology as it creates a cheap work force. This might be great for science in the short term but terrible for the scientist. Thanks for reading my rant =)

Dont do it =). According to a recent study by the Foundation for research and equal opportunity 40% of masters degrees have NEGATIVE return on investment... this means that after 30 years you will still will not recoup the money you lost by attending a masters degree program. But it all depends on what masters program you get into... if you manage to get into a top 10 program then go for it . If your pilot said he has a 60% chance of safely landing the plane would you still get int lol. What is your financial advisor said he has a 60% change of NOT losing all your money. would you still invest with him... Is your chief told you there a 40% chance youll get sick eating his food, would you still eat it =P I guess it all depends on how much you REALLY want it =) but defiantly not for the money.

My sister completed her studies in bachelor of biomedical science in rmit university and she got a job after a month itself in health sector ,it is a great route for MD aspirant and before getting into MD u can definitely work as a biomedical scientist so it's worth it.This course can be a great route for other higher courses as well.

Ok so even if you do an IBMS you can ALWAYS got into research or where ever. As none accredited degrees have many careers for biomed so does the IBMS . Even tho it’s assigned to the NHS it doesn’t mean u have to go into nhs!! Just to let everyone know. I’m applying to Lancaster uni and the biomed is IBMs and I’m not fully sure I want to be part of the NHS . But by doing it I can later down the line much easily and can make that decision

Same thing applies vice versa, if your biomed course isn’t accredited by the IBMS you can still go into the NHS though it’s a longer route as you eithe have to meet IBMS standards by doing a 12 month top up course or if the IBMS view your degree as meeting their standards, ie, you have learned all necessary lab skills then you can get the accreditation, I’ve got friends at KCL who did biomed and got the accreditation afterwards

Perfect! I think the problem is that most people can train to be biomedical scientists even without accredited degrees, so some people think that going to a Russell group rather than an accredited uni might be better! You get a well respected degree from a respected uni, plus you have the option to go the ibms route if you want after graduating. I would urge school leavers to forget accreditation and just attend the best uni they can for networking and i think improved job prospects and oppurtunities!

No, I don't think it is not weird. Being a doctor is definitely a benefit when doing biomedical research, and your experience will allow you to study quicker, For me an interesting aspect is that while doctors try to heal sick people biomedical research is also aimed at preventing that people get sick. Nutrition and toxicology are for instance amongst the application fields.

Well maybe. Most biomedical scientist learned their specific application field after they graduated.But that is not so different as for many other studies. Most biomedical masters programs will allow you to choose your own internships though so you can already start mastering a specific field.
