@Lone Wolf No, it doesn't have to be heavy. There's plenty of metal out there that isn't heavy. Check out Meadows of Heaven by Nightwish. Silent Lucidity by Queensryche. Just for a couple of examples. A lot of the hard rock/metal from the '70s and '80s were ballads. Sister Christian by Night Ranger for example.

Absolutely love Ghost, Very cool of you to do a video on this! Having been exposed to more of the metal community than I'd prefer, being a metal fan after all, I'm ALL too familiar with Ghost hate. Here's my opinion; Nearly all of the Ghost hate I encounter comes from overly-serious metalheads who don't like the fact that Ghost isn't "metal". When you spend time around metalheads (which are in my opinion the WORST type of music fan, they're mostly awful human beings), you come to realize that many of them have this blind hatred of anything that isn't rock or metal. Country, rap, hip hop, and especially pop. Just simply for not being metal. They think that metal is this special music that only "enlightened" people listen to or whatever. And many metal bands have satanic imagery, kinda like how Ghost does at face value. The face paint, the upside down crosses etc etc. To any metalhead whose familiar with black metal, looking at them without knowing anything about their sound would lead one to beleive they're a black metal band and not a hard rock group with pop influences. It just pisses them off because to the average smoothbrain metalhead, heavier music = better music. Anything with the dreaded p-p-p-pop sound MUST be enjoyed by only "posers". Then they'll shit on Ghost for being a gimmick band which is astronomically hypocritical since the Satanic/occult/religion gimmick has been regurgitated, hammered into the dust, and done to absolute DEATH by boring, trite metal bands for DECADES. In my humble opinion, Ghost is actually one of the first bands in YEARS to bring ANY sense of originality, creativity, personality, uniqueness or FUN to the satanic/occult theme with their music. TL;DR : most Ghost hate comes from insecure edgelords who think heavier music = better. Take it with a grain of salt ;)

But being the loudest and most obnoxious does not equate a majority. That said, nearly everyone I've met who claim to hate Ghost saw them before hearing the music, and that includes people who don't even like black metal to begin with. Too bad for them, Ghost are an amazing group who take so much care with ALL aspects of their art.

Each album features a new Papa Emeritus iteration as the lead singer, each with different characteristics with everything from dark and mysterious to young and flamboyant. I love Ghost... from the first moment I was fortunate enough to randomly see them, back in the day. And it's rare for me to get this on board with a modern group. Even if I love something modern, it usually doesn't stick with me this much. The first time I saw them was at Rock on the Range, like 2013 or something, looking down from one of the railings to the side stage. Out walks this guy in a pope's outfit. It went from "who the hell are these people" to "huh, this is kinda interesting." Then I got the CD, Infinitessimum, and that was it. It's really been something to watch them rise. It's so rare for a rock or metal act to break out in such a big way... and it feels like they aren't getting anywhere near as much playtime as the usual radio acts, Three Days Grace, Godsmack, whatever. As for substance, I think they've got a ton. It's remarkable how much they've done in such a short time.

I just saw Ghost for the first time on Feb 4, 2022 in Lincoln, NB. Never even knew who they were. They blew me away! The drummer doesn’t get enough credit lol. Wow! Anyway the lead singer would go behind the stage and THATs when the Ghouls were out there by themselves. Now to me that was his way of saying alright guys do your thing and give them their time to shine. He was joking with them and interacting with them the entire time. I’m a fan of them.

A friend that I play online games with turned me onto Ghost. He told me to listen to "He Is." Admittedly, I wasn't really into that song...just wasn't the style of music I was into. A week or so later, I dive down the rabbit hole just to see why my friend really dug this band. That's when I found "Cirice." I immediately text him to say that song would have been a better "gateway" to the band for me since I'm into heavier styles of music. After going through their catalog of music, I think they have a little something for everyone...which fits into the lore of trying to convert the world to their "church." Awesome band in my opinion.

I don't like the fact that people just take their theme a little too seriously, I think Ghost are really misunderstood and I hate that people say they worship satan or something like that, yeah they have a satanic look, dark satanic lyrics but that dosen't necessarily make them terrible people because I don't think they are devil worshippers, Ghost has like a story and Cardinal Copia, Papa, Nameless Ghouls are like characters. I don't like that people just think like that towards them, I would also consider them a very underrated band.

@horrorhistory73423 жыл бұрын
The nameless ghouls just play on stage that’s it, and that was the point. Also at least the current ghouls seem cool with remaining anonymous from what I’ve seen. Tobias is the one who writes all the lyrics, music, and plays almost every instrument when recording the albums, and he of course sings. He actually wanted to remain nameless as well, until people started snooping and guessed he was in ghost. Then all the names came out.
@elinolike2 жыл бұрын
they arent even involved with the album though? at least after the lawsuit i suppose. the ghouls are just hired musicians for live shows now.
@ass22782 жыл бұрын
iirc they don't take part in recording albums. the nameless ghouls are just for tours. its why in the albums you rarely hear backing vocals that you'd hear when they perform live (Tobias will do the backing vocals himself in the album recordings). tobias records most of the albums himself, with a bit of help here and there but nothing major. the ghouls are basically "workers" that he can simply replace, so it's probably why they're nameless.

From my experience listening to them recently (just found out about them), they sound like 80s glam or a band you would hear in a poplar 80s mixtape. Definitely not a bad thing at all, and gives a new generation an experience of what metal used to sound like. The metal genre is an umbrella term, and every decade has many variances of metal. Some metal sounds like Bon Jovi, and some metal sounds like Meshuggah.

Maybe they'll grow on me when I've heard more. Not sure what video it was I saw earlier, but a user replied and was explaining the lore behind the Ghost band and now I get what Ghost is trying to do. You know, I really can understand some peoples’ misgivings about Ghost. I really didn’t listen to them until earlier this year, driven largely by their videos coming into my feed. From a perspective that hasn’t been through the “betrayals” or breaking anonymity, I can say that their image is strong and would undoubtedly throw some people off. Maybe most would be the people that take music super serious or those who think maybe the Black Metal guys really are up there in Norway doing rites and living in forests. I always found it funny that these dudes were so serious and breaking rules and barriers and making their clothes from slain enemies but they’re playing Kramer guitars. But I don’t think any group can exist on image alone. They may share DNA with other genres or times, but the songwriting is solid and there’s a vein through it all that is their sound. All music cribs others - EVH, May he Rest In Peace, was tapping out Bach and Vivaldi. But is there something unique about Van Halen? Certainly. Would you mistake Ghost for ABBA? No. All that being said, I think Ghost has earned much of their criticism and Forge seems like he’s sometimes a bit too enamored of himself and his one-man show that’s actually six others too. They meld odd genres, but then again who only wants more carbon copies of Slayer or Mayhem? Their success, perhaps more than anything, speaks to there being something more than image. I look at Ghost a bit like one of my all-time favorites, the Darkness. Maybe their image overshadowed them at first, but to this day those boys are making some amazing, heavily influenced rock and roll and it’s glorious.

I didn't follow up because the other things I heard from them just didn't reach me then, and, in all honesty, I then also assumed the "Satanist and pageantry = metal" myth. After a recent news article with a video of the change-over from the Cardinal to Papa Ameritus IV, I rediscovered them and some of the newer songs as well. I have come to like them soooo much more, even coming to like some of their older songs. Square Hammer, Year Zero, Cirice, Majesty, Rats, Ritual, Dance Macabre, He Is, See the Light, Zenith (unreleased), Witch Image, Ritual, Majesty, Ghuleh/Zombie Queen, Deus In Absentia....that's just to name a few!!!

based on my personal experience with people who don't like ghost, it's mainly hardcore metal fans who view them as a "metal band for people that don't like metal". most metalheads that i know have disdain for bands that use keyboards. they like very heavy guitar. i think a lot of people also feel that ghost relies too heavy on their imagery to try and sell themselves, and without their visual aesthetics, nobody would know who they are. honestly? i love ghost. and i don't listen to very much metal at all. i mainly listen to industrial, synthpop, and darkwave music. the metal i like is bands that metalheads typically have disdain for because they're "not heavy enough" or use keyboards.

You nailed it for me. The reason I love ghost so much, and I dare say they are one of my favorite bands of all time is because they are not afraid to change their style or sound to fit the theme of the album and show their influences. To me Ghost has done something that really has not been seen since arguably Marylyn Manson, but me personally would say Alice Cooper with bringing back to the mainstream the lost art of being a true showman front man along with the modern stuff of music videos and no other way of putting it, comedic shorts/promos to promote new albums and tours. To me that’s also a throw back to the old underground punk and metal days with again a modern twist. Anyone who was around before the days of the internet remembers those comedic fliers, zines, and so one that helped make that scene great. There is so much amazing music out there and I feel that Ghost has literally opened the door for the younger generation to go out searching for it. Because of Ghost, I discovered Blue Oyster Cult. Yeah I heard all their big hits on the radio but never actually listened to an album, then regretted not listening to them sooner!!! To me one of the biggest things I feel that all the Ghost critics have in common is their elitism and fear of change much like what the skate punk fans and some bands for that matter. NOFX really comes to mind on that topic. Hate to say it because I love their music but they did help shoot themselves in the foot sending that genre into rehab or assisted living. Anyways...it’s that us vs them mentality as well the need to fit into tightly crafted niches and labels is what got us to no longer just appreciate and just let the music itself do the talking. An argument could be made that in the music scene as a whole that it’s a pure reflection on what’s going on in the world right now with racism and inequality. Even in their own social groups you’re hearing “they are not metal enough” or “they are too poppy” etc...literally no different!!! Any band out there that’s willing to show their influences on their sleeve and show it’s ok to listen to and like as well as being inspired by all genres should be praised. Falling In Reverse really comes to mind with that as well as Ghost with getting people to listen to that amazing music that they normally would not have.

Beautiful music. No doubt. But let's not kid ourselves... his "satanism" is not for "entertaining"... it is for publishing, marketing, proclaiming like, in real life (again, not as a show) his belief that going to hell is ok and having Satan in your life and actions, is the way to be.
