I would add; putting the cage in the room you go the more often is ideal, because you can talk to them when you come in the room and they see you're not dangerous because your presence becomes normal.

YES! Talk to them! They learn to recognise words and simple phrases, and always appreciate being told what's happening (once they recognise the words, or even the cadence). In our house: repeating phrases with "poopies" (on cleaning up), the "out-and-about" song for floor time (they'll sit and wait for me to pick them up), "home-times" (at the end of floor time, with similar results), and all other common eventualities. It's a rare occasion when the little expletives get the expletive out of my way!

Patience and hand-feeding is really the trick :) My most tame piggy, Lady, was tame after a week and even loves strangers. She has learned human = snacks/food/veggies. My other two girls are more "reserved" and skittish compared to her. My most scared piggy, Daisy, was about six months before she understood that she could take the food in my hand, without being afraid of it. Now at age of almost 4 years, I am only allowed to pet her on the head sometimes. (I had her since she was old and big enough to leave her mom)

The key point of all these tips is number 5: have patience. I have 5 piggies aged between 20 months and 4 years old. On average it has taken up to two years to totally get their trust. All bar one of them let us reach in for cuddles now, all of them come and sit next to me at meal times (though they still run away from my ex wife. Think they have the right idea, wish I'd listened 😂😂😂). It does take work, think a lot of people don't understand that.

I’ve had my two boars for nearly 4 months now. They run up to the side of the cage and climb up on their back legs to get food. They eat from my hands easily, not just through the bars but even when I lean in and hand feed them. One of them let’s me pet the side of his face/chin when I’m feeding him vegetables. But he doesn’t like it when I try to pet his back or sides. He doesn’t run, but he steps away and glares. I haven’t tried to pick either of them up yet though, when I start to reach under them, one will run, but the other just walks away. One also let’s me pet his whole body through the guinea daddy fleece pocket. I’m trying to work on making them ok with me petting their backs and pick them up. But not sure of how to go about it without scaring them. This video was helpful though, thanks. Ps: my cage has an open top, so I don’t have to squeeze them throug the door. Also when I change the fleece I get them to go into a box them remove it.

This was perfect timing for me to see! I’m getting a buddy (from a rescue) for the Guinea Pig my hubby brought home from a friend’s house. I’m also getting a much larger cage. Buckey is still afraid until I pick him up and give him treats. He does let me scratch him while he’s in the cage, too. So we’ve made progress over the past three to four weeks. I know it will get better with consistent time put in and a buddy and a bigger cage!

Scotty, what would you prescribe if a piggie is teeth chattering at the idea of being picked up? I have a male piggie who is young, he's 6 months old and blind in one eye who becomes so aggravated by the idea of being picked up. I generally only handle him for weight and body checks. I put it down to his blindness, when I am not trying to grab him he's super confident and will stand on my hand, he's bold and super sweet.

Love the videos Scott. Very helpful stuff. I’m working toward my guinea pigs being happy with me petting them and picking them up to hold them or for floor time. Paulie is still pretty skittish, but Tony let’s me pet the side of his face while hand feeding him. We had a breakthrough today, Tony let me pet the side of his face without me handfeeding him. Def going to try to build on that.

My three adopted girls are the same, so think they were deprived in a previous home. Had them 6 months and always give a selection of veg three times a day. They will now nibble a bit of cucumber, celery and romaine. So because they wouldn't eat any veg I was concerned. This resulted in me going out with a pair of scissors and cutting grass daily, they absolutely love grass and it's the only food they get excited about. But be aware that you can't give lawn mower cut grass. So a large pair of scissors and a plastic bag and off I go and it all gets rinsed when I get home - maybe give it a try and see how they get on with grass.
