Definitely agree with focusing on the positives. Things like hitting your ball in the middle of the fairway even if it is on the next hole over. Or if I finish with having lost only 7 balls or less due to water hazards or the occasional sliced ball that decided to take a detour to Neverland when it made a hard right and went straight on 'til morning, never to be seen again. All joking aside, you have SERIOUSLY helped my golf game with your channel, Rick. You're very good at giving detailed, yet simplistic instructions so even idiots like myself can learn. I appreciate your channel so much. Thank you!!

1:32 Very true. Not only keeping your club clean but it helps slow you down as a player if you are upset for some reason. Taking that extra time to make sure your club is clean before the shot lets you (me at least) refocus and look at the shot I want to execute.

Some more things: 1. Swing with the similar smooth tempo on all shots especially for wedges and into wind shots to stop ballooning the ball 2. Lay up to their favourite yardage (normally so they have a full shot in) 3. Solid on short putts 4. They strike the ball well most times which allows for good distance control 5. They avoid main hazards which could destroy your score (out of bounds, water, pot bunkers, thick trees/bushes) 6. If they do miss a green they normally miss in a spot that gives them plenty of green to work with. If the flag is right at the back of a raised green then they will make sure they dont hit it over the back, they will play short of the pin to be safe. Credentials: 3 handicap

@RickShields. I've only been playing golf for 4 months now. Just bought my first set of clubs ever. TaylorMade M2 driver and 3-wood and I ended up going with the new Callaway Steelheads. Mostly for shot forgiveness as I am new. I have followed you and have taken many steps and tips that you have given. Gone to the range almost daily put the time in perfected the swing as much as I guess you could in about 4 months and I can't believe I'm saying this but I shot a 71 on Sunday. Join a golf league and every time I say I've been playing for four months No One Believes Me. I don't know if you read these comments or if they make it to you I know you're busy with open qualifying and preparing and everything of that nature but I just wanted to let you know how big of an influence you have been. keep up the good work boss and I'll keep watching your vids

Excellent video Rick with spot on recommendations for consistency. I do every one of your recommendations while on the course in addition to a consistent re-shot routine, proper pre-round equipment check, pre-round warm up, and a post round review of what went as expected and what didn't. This latter process provides the foundation for future practice and work with my PGA pro.

Great tips video Rick. I was surprised that out of your 5, I do 4 of them consistently. #1, using the same ball is the exception, mainly due to premium ball cost as I go with the best deal. Being a 13.2 index, I don't see or feel much difference in whatever premium ball I'm using..

If you want some motivation for that, check out this video from 4:25 onward: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4HIXoqYmZWdbpY The consistency of Tiger's routine from approaching the ball to impact is timed to within 1 second every time, whether he's hitting driver or wedge. Amazing.

I do all 5 Rick. Great video. I was able to move into a single digit handicap when I also started playing more strategically. Example know your distance and hit the shot that will leave you with your best wedge shot. The other day I birdied a long par 5 that everybody else in my group either parred or was 1 over. The difference? I had 275 to the green. Well my 3 wood was’t getting there so I hit my 6 iron 180 to leave me 95 in from a great lie which is an easy 54 for me. Stuck it close and made the bird. Everybody else tried that 3 wood shot and was either left in trouble or with a 50 yard shot that was not a shot they had in their bag. Play smart know your game.

I got one. PGA Tour pros don’t play in cold weather... they always play in warmer weather. Look at where they are. Cool to see you gaming the F9. And I am good at doing numbers 2, 3, and 4, and number 5 for me is unique. Because I'm more of a feel golfer. I see the shot, then based off what I see I pick the club. I do know the general distances of my clubs but I need to work on my consistency this year.

I try to do all these things, decent improving golfer :) I'd like to add to the focus on positive. I first heard that from faldo, but it really has helped. Makes shots more fun and less stressful. I'd like to add though, that the good golfers I know forget the bad shots/breaks. You could have the worst round going, but there is always the next opportunity to make that great shot that keeps you coming back and can sometimes save your round instead of blowing it up. Oh, and picking a ball and sticking with it is critical imo. It trickles down through your game.

Good video, Rick, thanks! As for me, I just like to clear my head before each shot, set it free. My mindset is that I know how to hit the ball, so set these technicalities aside and just concentrate on where I want the ball to go. Oh yeah, not that easy ;-)
