Look I don’t know if this is really a trend as such. But when I was growing up in the early 2000s, skateboarding was huge. There were skate parks and skate shops everywhere. Literally every town with a shopping centre had a skate shop, and major cities had them in droves. And skate shops weren’t just a place to buy stuff. The person behind the counter was always a skater, you’d often find them giving advice to their customers. Skate shops were a cultural hangout for skaters. I miss that. These days, probably mostly due to the rise in internet shopping, most of the skate shops have died out. And the ones that still exist, are usually large franchises. Their stock comprises of 80% scooters and 20% skateboards. And the guy or girl behind the counter is just there to collect a pay check. They usually don’t skate at all and have nothing to offer to the community.
@pinstripedynasty61173 жыл бұрын
I know exactly what you mean bro. It's sad. Most skateshops that were local to me the sponsored riders of that shop were the ones working/ hanging out there and they were strictly skate shops with a huge selections of real legit brands. Now most of those shops are closed and the ones that are still open mainly sell paddle boards, long boards and scooters with a little corner with main stream skateboards, shitty brands and completes, lame grip tape the posers and little kids love with some dork behind the counter that can't even 3 flip(not that that matters but I miss when the real Thrasher's were the ones that worked in the skate shops) its sad what happened to the real skate community

I remember back in high school some homies and I would skate to one of my more local shops everyday after school. The owner didn’t care if we bought shit or not and he had a few rails/ramps we’d toss out on the sidewalk and shred. If it wasn’t busy for him he’d join us. Another trend that died in skateboarding is skateboarding. It used to be about rebellion and being an individual. It didn't matter if you fit in cause you didn't want to. You had your board and that's all you needed. This was as big as going to your favorite spot and totally shredding it. Now it's all about media and up votes. those DC shoes at 5:49 are PERFECT for boarding. when i skated heavy as a teen from like 13-18 they were the only ones i would wear after my first pair. they protect the rolling of the ankles. you could kickflip a trillion times without having the toe box degrade. the bottoms and heel were solid. everything was solid. and it felt like an extra layer of protection. you would assume the major downplay was that it would be difficult to have control or feel the board with so much padding but that was NOT the case. i think the ones at 5:49 the black pair look Great. they arent ridiculous or styled just for having style. they were built to last, for comfort, and protection of the ankle and foot. i would be using them today if i could still skate. and if i had more money or some asshole didnt steal half my shoe collection, i would be rocking them still to this day! i honestly would recommend them to any one who is skating.

I remember all my older cousins in Huntington beach had old-school skateboards in the 80's then grew out of skateboarding and passed boards down to me. It was rare to meet other skaters and skateboarding was considered like a trend that died and wasn't cool anymore, it was mocked for the most part. It was the stoners and punk rockers that mostly skated and there was a small clique that would skate after school until getting kicked out that gradually grew. Then Tony Hawk's pro skater came out and all of a sudden all of the younger kids got really interested in skateboarding and started skating after school. We would teach kids how to do basic tricks, I remember teaching my friends brother to kickflip then he moved to oceanside and started skating with all the younger kids there. I kinda stopped skating then visited a year later and they we're all pro's, it was ridiculous. One kid even pointed himself out to me on a video from the Tonk Hawk game........yeah I was impressed lol. It is amazing to see how far skateboarding has come and to have watched it grow from a hobby that was mocked....... to an Olympic sport. My first board was an 80's Tony Hawk that has all these layers of black something or other in between layers of wood in order to make the board stronger. Well, it certainly made it weigh 80 pounds but I'm now wondering what that shit was and how long it lasted.

I just left a comment where I mentioned that too. It was expensive and heavy I remember. My spoilt rich only-kid friend had one bought for him. The weight didn't matter to him because he couldn't do anything on it worth a fuck, at all. He just got all the best shit like GT Performers and all that bought for him on a regular basis, even though he could never get either of them off the ground.

Not sure about the shoes though. I could never skate in the tight Vans or what not, the bulkier, the better, especially if you are a freestyle skater. Can't even count how many injuries I could've had if it wasn't for the big shoes. Also they go pretty well with baggy pants which I still rock. In the end, it's all about the preference and what you're comfortable with. Tried skinny pants one time and could barely walk in them, not even skate. And yet I see all these kids with skinny jeans and Vans shoes and wondering "How the hell can you even skate in that?"

I was a Vans kid with tight pants. I know what you mean though, the painted on skinny jeans looked impossible but they were really quite 'flexible' especially when worn in. Brand new skinny jeans would feel pretty lousy. The thing about the Vans shoes is that you shred them to shit but I loved the feel. It's like driving a car with no shoes on where you can really get a sense of acceleration. Idk man, not proof-reading before I send it. Vans shoes slapped for feel 100% vouch.

I started skating around 2003, the big bulky shoes were great they are still my favorite to skate in. They last way longer than the thin shoes now. After you break them in they feel better. Triple stich toe caps for life 🤘 The baggy pants were great for a bit, the skinny jeans were too. Hahah nothing better than rocking a buldge through high-school. Trust me girls totally didn't mind lmfao it Also a huge trend that died out was honestly decks that were 7.5 to my preferred 7.75 for fliptricks, and trimming off some deck weight. It helped with the tech skating for faster rotation. Now it's hard to find anything 8.0 and below. It's a bummer as a 33yr old to try, and find equipment that I'm accustomed to. The shoes suck now, and last about half as long. The boards are heavy. The pains of getting older lol Great vid man

The thing you say about TikTok 9:45 is true for every trend it sets. Another trend every day, people realize it's actually hard, they move on. And it doesn't have an impact on the matter at all. TikTok is a culture of it's on. One of trying and failing constantly, with the only goal to be famous for half a day and sinking in a deep depression afterwards. It represents the social media addiction and the inability to do things for their own sake of the young generation more than everything else.

I remember skateboarding in the late 90s early 2000s. My big inspirations were Rodney Mullen, Jamie Thomas, Chad Muska and Tony Hawk. The scene back then when it came to skateboarding is that every skatepark was always happening when it came to BMX, rollerblading and Skateboarding. We would all hangout at a friends house on the weekends and watch’s VHS skate videos then head out to the skatepark or the schools and and one of our friends would always bring that chunk of wax for the benches lol. Ughhh the memories

What... I consider the big shoes as actual skate shoes. Thin shoes have no protection and don't last very long.
@kaleen7573 жыл бұрын
it 's to everyone 's preference . personally , thinner shoes give me more feel to the board and it 's more comfortable . big shoes feel like i have pillows on my feet and i don 't really feel like i have control over the board . the only advantage you would really get from bigger shoes is comfort for when you 're doing gaps , and the durability would last a lot longer .

There may be times where I hate tiktok cause it makes things like skateboarding a trend, but i got more inspiration to skate from tiktok. I had a board for a few years but kind of forgot about it. But then I saw all of these people on tiktok skating and I was like “bro I got a skateboard like right here I could give it a try” and even after not having tiktok anymore, I still love skating. Yeah it takes a lot of commitment and I’m the kind of person who usually doesn’t stick to something, but even after trying one of the “easiest tricks” (shuvit) for months and just FINALLY getting it, I still want to keep going. There’s a difference between following a trend and being inspired.
