As a beginner I started off getting a Casio digital piano after about close to a year practice I realised that the digital piano keys isn’t doing great as I am moving towards graded exams. Have made the right choice to upgrade to a upright piano and the feel is very different, it’s a 2nd hand beginner piano but it always keeps me motivated because it is a real piano. I’m at grade 4 now, and saving up for another one. I hope to complete grade 8. That’s my only wish :)

It's OK to listen to a motivational seminar but the most difficult thing is to listen to another pianist play a flawless performance of the piece you're working on. When you haven't reached that "exceptionally" high level of playing you may feel depressed because someone else will always be better than you or you'd never reach that level.

I sacrificed half of my college money, and worked for 7 of my (I'm currently 18) 16 years (at the time) to buy a Grand piano. And next year I'll be doing my entrance exam for a conservatory ;D. I could've never done it without having access to an actual grand. I can't even think how horrible my life would be without my Grand. It helped me finally beat my depression. It made my dream of going to a conservatory more realistic (maybe not actually, but it felt more realistic). I have been depressed from the age of 8, until I bought that piano (I have a history of child abuse, loneliness, you get it). For the first time in years, I was so happy and whenever I saw my piano I smiled. Nowadays, I have my moments, but most of the time I feel pretty good. But I would still put my piano over anything in life. It's not an instrument to me, it's an angel. It helped me get my life back on track, and helped me overcome my depressing and sad childhood. just felt like I'd share a bit of my story here

Thanks Josh I had studied piano for over six years - was already playing Bach French Suites, Chramer exercises, Haydn Sonata etc - but stopped in 2012 and moved from a huge city to the Coast (state of São Paulo - Brazil). Since then, sometimes I still played at home and felt sorry for the time that I lost and that has passed so fast (faster and faster as we get older). So last month I decided to take back private lessons with my former teacher - I travel back where I once lived just for the lessons. Your videos have been really helpfull and inspirational. I even practice the scales using one of your tips in a 15 minute video from 04/05/2013: going up 2 octaves in parallel motion, out 2 octaves in contrary, then up and down 2, in out 2, down 2. Thank you so much for all these great videos. YOU ARE AN EXCELLENT, TALLENTED TEACHER. I'm sure they have helped and inspired lots of people in and outside America.

just bored I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. That’s a tough call - if we got specific and said a 30 year old beat-up Yamaha upright vs. a brand new Nord Stage 4 piano, then I’d take the Nord. But even a mediocre upright will at least give you the real hammer-action that keyboards can only imitate

I'm planning on buying a new digital piano near the end of the year - apart from anything else I simply don't have the space even for an upright. I'm wondering what people who have digital pianos recommend. I'm expecting to spend in the £750 to £1000 range. I used to have a Casio Privia 330PX which I liked, but moved to a new country and couldn't ship it with me. That model isn't available anymore and rather than just buy another Casio, I'm wondering what others think. I know there are also Kawais, Yamahas and Rolands the likely fit into the price range.

Interesting what you say about having a decent instrument to improve your playing. It seems that when I had access to good grands, my playing got much better. I am currently paying for the restoration of a Mason & Hamlin grand, albeit a smaller one-5'8", but it's a good instrument, and I know that my playing will improve with it. I can't practice for long on my Yamaha upright even though I'm thankful to have it.

Can confirm! I had not progressed for decades until we took the plunge and purchased an old Steinway O. I'm suddenly developing technique I never could as a youth. There are affordable grands out there (that may eventually need some work), but will serve you well as a practice instrument and return dividends. If you are able, I do recommend splurging on a good instrument.

Great video and a largely underrated channel. I started on a 61 key light up Casio keyboard and self taught my first few songs (Everglow, Strobe and Faded) as my interest grew all I wanted was a full sized, weighted keyboard and after months and months of saving I bought a Yamaha P125 and I thought I had made it, the excitement I felt knowing I got to go home after work and have access to a fully sized weighted Piano was everything. 10 months later and my playing is on a completely different level, I'm still a noob compared to pro's and my keyboard is far from pro standard but it kept increasing my motivation to learn and practice more. Now I've finally started taking lessons to learn sight reading and help my overall technical and theoretical progression. My point being, Music is an extremely unique, ubiquitous journey, once you start and it grips you it becomes hard to think about or do anything else, for me it started as a hobby as a way to challenge myself and now I'm in a place where I want to eventually make a career out of it. If you love it stay consistent and don't deviate from your goals, today's practice/input is tomorrow's results and its really what you do everyday that will determine your success at instrumentation. Good luck to everyone!

@@FelipeDChs nice man! Once my sight reading is up to scatch I hope to get into some classical pieces. You'll enjoy the P125, it has quite a heavy action for a digital so is definitely a serious hand workout coming from non-weighted. Best of luck!

PianoWorld's forums and their quarterly virtual recitals have been a great environment and the source of plenty of motivation for me as an adult beginner. Also buying a beautiful (second-hand upright, not very expensive) acoustic piano after 1 year of starting was a real boost, also because it forced me to practice without worrying about people listening! Digitals are great but nothing beats a real piano. After 7 years I crave a grand, I just don't have enough space for it!

What's your opinion on actually good keyboards? The new ones that have good voicing and a very real feel. I'm thinking about getting one instead of an upright one, am I making a mistake?
@AnnaKhomichkoPianist5 жыл бұрын
MiksuOW it really depends on the model, some very expensive electronic pianos can replace the upright piano but I guess professional pianists will just always prefer an acoustic instrument. I would personally recommend still to stick to an upright piano if it’s a good one
@Miksu__5 жыл бұрын
@@AnnaKhomichkoPianist The thing is, I can get a decent upright with 2000 euros, but I can get a really good electronic one with 2k. I'm also moving out in a couple of years, so it will be much easier to play the electronic one with headphones on in an apartment building than play a real one and annoy the neighbors. My family would probably also appreciate if I played with headphones on instead of normally
@AnnaKhomichkoPianist5 жыл бұрын
MiksuOW if it mostly the question of the silence and space, of course it's fine. Being a professional concert pianist I have the same problems living in an apartment with neighbors and have to practice 6+ hours per day. We have here in Germany a genius solution for people like me, renting a baby grand or an upright piano from Yamaha with a silent system (a real acoustic instrument with an electronic version built inside), you can check it out. Maybe something for you as well
