I’m Italian and used to wearing good quality and design clothes and shoes...yet I agree the mainstream habit is to be sloppy and not realize what fits us best. I’m 46, a bit overweight but with light makeup, the right simple outfit for every occasion and a smiling/gentle/confident behaviour towards other people I can assure you I still make heads turn. If you love yourself and take care of you, you’ll always be gorgeous

My grandparents taught me dressing appropriately is more important than the amount of money you spend on an outfit. I switched to neutral, more simple underwear, made life so much easier. Looking healthy is the best foundation and a great investment.

I agree with 'honour the occasion'. I used to dress up when going to watch a ballet because my mom said it was to honour the dancers. But today I see people wearing everyday clothes, even jeans to see a ballet. Pity.

I truly believe people really don’t feel the event. I’m always excited to go wherever I’m taking time to go. I cannot believe how people feel about weddings. I’m appalled that people can’t party and celebrate a couples love and marriage. Or to spend a lot of money for an opera, musical, etc. but dress as if you care

Indeed your observations are world-wide. Flip flops/jandals at weddings together with cut off shorts and tank tops. Just common, common, common. Vulgar and disrespectful. And remembering my beloved grandmothers immortal words of: Always wear lipstick and a smile. Dress with respect for yourself, the occasion and to honor the company you are in.

I agree. When my daughter was younger she was involved in several music groups & appeared at theatres/venues. My OH & I would drress up, but 90% of other parents there would turn up in grubby jeans, fleeces & trainers. Ugh!

Ignore labels, whether they're size labels or designer labels, unless they consistently work for you. For instance, I love Nine West shoes; they aren't super expensive, but there is something about the way the manufacture their fit that works for me. I was gifted some "red soles" (you know who they are) and they were the most uncomfortable shoe I've ever worn. And don't worry if the size label says 8 or 28; the fit is all that matters.

I agree about the “red soled” shoes. They were a leopard print wedge style, and I thought I’d really lucked out when I found them at a quality consignment store. They hadn’t been worn more than a very few times - and I soon realized why. Truly the most uncomfortable shoes ever. I redonated them after a couple of months.

You remind me of a serious style challenge I faced once. I was on temporary duty at a rather remote US Army installation (within US borders). One of the enlisted men was marrying a local girl, and they kindly invited me to the wedding. The dress code was “no uniforms,” but the only formal clothing I had with me was my dress uniform. There was no dress shop within 100 miles, there was no online retail back then, and I had no time to travel. There was a small Walmart, and the choices there were unacceptable. (It would be more accurate to say that there were no choices there!). Fortunately, there was a thrift shop in town, and I found an old dark red silk shirtdress. The fabric was somewhat faded & definitely limp, but I decided that an occasion-appropriate style was the most important factor. So I bought it and wore it, and felt fine in it.

Good advice Beth, I always say that style is not about age it’s about your weight and you’re heights. What I mean by that is ... there is no point in trying to copy a influencer who is 5.6/5.7 tall and slim if your 5.2/5.3. And carrying any excess weight, Jackets, knitting dresses (can’t be altered so easily) will look and have a different affect on different heights & weights. If your 5.6 say... a longer blazer will look great on you but if your 5.3 it will shorten your legs. Also, cropped jumpers, jackets etc will look great on a shorter person and make them look taller but, not so much on a taller person. Another example with your weigh, skinny Jeans will look great if your a size 8 up to say 12/14 but anything above that not so much, it will make everything look a lot bigger but mainly your knees and backside, if your above size 16, European size, best stick to straight leg or boot cut. Bags also play a part in getting it right for your size and height larger bags on a shorter person will swamp you but on a taller person looks great. So, it’s not so much about age but more about getting it right for your size and height. Match your weight & height to the right cloths then you will feel confident and look great irrespective of your age.

My mom is the classiest lady I know, she shared this tip that has saved me from embarrasment more than once. When in doubt it, it's always better to be over dressed than under dressed. If you are over dressed for, the job interview, wedding, cocktail hour, you will feel much better about yourself than if you slightly over dressed, are under dressed and feeling like you somehow didn't get the memo.

Interesting. That has worked for me. Lastl memorable time was dinner at the harbour front home of the CEO of the very large company where my husband worked, along with top management and the board. Casual whatever seemed impossible for what I had in my closet, for such a venue. I dressed appropriately. The board and the CEO adored me.

1. Dress accordingly to the occasion 2. Dress comfortably, feel good in what you wear! 3. Show flesh but without overdoing it. Example: if you show legs, don't be so revealing on the top. 4. Don't follow trends blindly. Stay relevant and fresh nonetheless 5. Wear the right lingerie

I found that when questioning appropriate attire for an occasion pick the more elevated of the two options and wear it with confidence. I went to a baby shower recently. I wore a dress and heels and honestly did not question my decision as it is what I was taught was appropriate for the occasion. When I got to the party everyone was wearing jeans or shorts. I just wore it confidently because honestly I loved my outfit and felt beautiful in it. I received so many compliments at the party. This works almost every time (not for more formal occasions as the rules are more precise for the occasion).

I'm sure you put the ladies in jeans to shame. I'm from an Oregon farm, grew up wearing jeans as work clothes. We dressed up when going to town... wouldn't have dreamed of wearing work clothes to social events or shopping!!! Jeans, no matter how hyped, priced or branded, are not appropriate if you wish to be taken seriously anywhere... except, of course, the barnyard or other casual work areas.

@@cindykelly8466 That's fine .. I'm sure the norm has changed, many changes happen. It's about the same with language... after so many years of struggle, getting the vote in 1920, in the US, and making so many advances, I often find people call me and other women "guys". Mixed groups are referred to as "guys", the status of being a woman is ignored. I hate being called a guy. Did we really do all that work to come out with no feminine identity... at all, to become just one of the "guys"...?

Favorite line on this show, "I'm a big rule breaker", but you need to know the rules before you can break them. So true, massively so. In ALL cultures! I generally go with classic pieces, and do something to "disturb" the look. One example of that would be the combat boots with a tiered skirt. Tell you what, I was doing that in the 70's 80's, and it's pretty ubiquitous these days. Golly, may not be disturbing enough when everybody's doing it. What it does mean is, wearing sensible combat boots or other comfortable shoes under your skirts means you dont have to wear heels for an outdoor wedding where the ground might not be level. I welcome the wild, "bushy" trends that are so prevalent in America's wild west! Save the stilettos, and that beautiful tailored suit for church weddings where you know you have pavement. Nothing worse than wobbling around and sinking your heel 3in into the rose garden sod! No matter the rebel you are, these 5 rules always apply. Just brand them into your brain!

Watching this six months later (I love this video), I’m adding my old maxim “shoes set the tone of the outfit”. Wearing the right shoes for the level of formality of the occasion is so important. I used to see a lot of really casual outfits, like Daisy Dukes and a tank, worn with high heels, ouch. The pandemic has, I think, made more comfortable footwear popular.

Dear Beth, I allways followed those rules. They are essential, I think, and "normal", I thought. But the worst case I ever experienced relating to dress code was this: my Danish husband and I were living in Northern Germany and as often in Denmark as possible. About 12 years ago both of us were going to be knighted in DK. Dresscode: tails for the gentlemen, long and black for the ladies, so we had 2 suitcases. I wore casual at the car ride, navy t and maxi skirt. I had proper new clothes in my suitcase. But looking for it after our arrival iI didn't find it. My husband had forgotten to put MY suitcase into the car, though he promised to take care of them. Imagine:I had NOTHING with me, and as it was Saturday afternoon ALL SHOPS were closed. Nothing to wear to go to the rest room in the motel, no make up, no lingerie, no long black dress.... He isn't my hubby anymore, not only because of that day...

My husband and I attended a wedding of a dear friend a few years ago. Even though the wedding had a country theme, the daughter of the bride showed up in short shorts and a tank top, with no bra on. She was eighteen. Yes, it was a July wedding. I believe afterwards she was leaving with her friends. I would have dressed for the wedding and brought shorts and a top for later.

Great rule reminders, these are all givens to look elegant and appropriate. Dress for the occasion is the one that stands out to me. Why is it that there's a levelling down of special occasions to the most casual possible? Casual is great for a good portion of our day to day life, but not all the time. Even dinner at a friend's should be a chance to wear something a little elevated or at least different, for example a skirt or pair of faux leather pants. Sadly, this idea seems to be disappearing in society; everyone wants to be as casual as possible 24/7.

Im from Tokyo, Japan and the first time I came to the US was really mindblowing ! People are fat abd they dress casually and sloppily EVERYWHERE !! While in here most people always make a conscious choice to dress nicely. Even the ordinary housewives doing everyday errands here would be considered dressing up by the US standard !

I have transformed and dressed women for many years especially plus size women and one thing they often ask is ' what shoes to wear with this ? ' ( especially in the evening) and I always say ' what you are comfortable in' ! There is nothing worse than jiggling on new tight shoes or having to sit it out. If you are comfortable people will see and react to you, if you are uncomfortable then it spoils the event, the evening and the look.

I agree with your 5 rules. Being a 72 year old, I have always tried to dress appropriately for the occasion. However, in this day and age, “casual” attire seems to take precedent. I wear dresses/skirts/nice pants to church but find most of the women are in blue jeans or other casual styles. I am comfortable with what I wear and have noticed a handful of women seem to dress up a bit more for church. I’d like to think I influenced that change..lol!

One style 'rule' I discovered, after yrs of wearing contact lenses, and wearing beautiful statement earrings, I needed to switch to glasses (dry eyes)! No more dangling, or big chunky earrings, which I loved! It's just too much 'face furniture'. So, I do still wear hoops, but smaller ones, and if I also wear a necklace, it's long, not a choker or pectoral style. I do have a small face, but my neck is fairly long, if your neck is short, and your frames a statement style, I would definitely wear studs, or finer, shorter hoops and dangling earrings.

@@dianelodico2166 I know! But it is a dilemma for the 'four-eyes' population. Get statement frames, then what about your beloved statement earrings? How to look 'dressy + sexy' in glasses? I have a very high-index prescription, so can't wear thin frames...lenses are too thick for that. Even understated frames don't really make me feel dressed-up and stylish🤓.

New to your channel and am glad you are over 50. I already had a good style sense from years of personal study of wardrobe basics as I learned I am 15 years older than you. I also advocate the right lingerie and realize that is where my wardrobe is lacking somewhat. I plan to fix that soon It's nice to see you fashion bloggers in dressy shoes; unfortunately, I am now in orthopedic shoes until my feet get better. I am blessed to have a few quality shoe brands in storage I hope to be able to wear again: Naturalizers, but now I opt for the medically necessary ones and am thankful I can walk with a walker, but had to give up car ownership temporarily,. I am an advocate of hats, casual berets, and similar styles and also know how to style scarves, and necklaces, to keep the focus away from my feet. I don't know where you live but you sound as if you live in the U S. One favorite blogger lives in the UK and I love her accent-not sure who pays for her wardrobe--I know one Colorado blogger uses a shopping app that I hope to sign up for in future. I come from an office assistant background and bought quality pieces, and then recently ventured into wearing blazers in prints. Since I am basically retired and live in a very casual small town in western Wisconsin, the dress code here sometimes seems dismal to me. However, I have been able to find my own groove in that regard, since I moved from the greater Seattle area 12 years ago and most of my wardrobe came with me, being very basics. I also know how to sew, knit, and crochet and can make my own accessories--one funky crocheted hat looks like a platypus and is quite playful. I made knitted hats a few years back and before my mom died last year, she still had a nice hat I had knitted for her some 25 years earlier. Wow. My sewing machine is a bit mad at me, since I bought it as my dream machine, a Singer 2001 Touchtronic in either 1978 or 1979 in Fairbanks. She's been through a house fire in 1982, down the Alcan in 1987 and shipped to Wisconsin in 2008, and not ready to be retired. I have a couple outfits in the works and know how to modify garments since I have a long torso. I enjoy your channel now that I have found it. Keep up the good work and keep looking and feeling great. Thanks for showing us gray haired ladies that it's okay to have gray hair and look great. I know a few ladies who have also embraced their gray locks and I think it is a great time to be alive in 2020. There are so many more opportunities for women now in all areas of life than 200 or more years in the past offered us. God bless you and keep living a good life and looking great in blue jeans.

Madonna from the 80s , while cool as she was at the time, influenced alot of sexy sloppy wear like showing bra straps under a tank top and grown mature women didn't dress like that 20-30yrs ago... too many jeans and t-shirts made in China is the de,-feminized uniform of America

I agree with all those style rules and have followed them all my life. I have to say the older I get the most important undergarments get. I was very small breasted for most of my life. Suddenly when I got to be over 50, I noticed "the girls" were getting big and they were sagging. (to say it was shocking to me, would be an understatement. LOL) So, I went right to Soma, got measured and fitted. They recommended bras that lift you up, they made a big difference in my appearance. I do not go out of the house without them on, even for a walk around the neighborhood. I have noticed so many woman my age whose bras allow their breasts to sag, it is not a good look. And that grandmother like "look" creeps up on you. And of course, well fitted undies are so important, so you don't see lines on your trousers. I always wear Spanx under dresses. I never had to wear shape wear when I was young because I was thin and fit, but menopause has gotten the better of my figure. ;-) Thank you Beth!

Very late to the show. I love reading comments as there is much to learn there as well. Ms. Djalali offered tips that taught grace and elegance, externally (attire). Additionally Ms. Djalali demonstrated grace and elegance, internally (emotional) with her responses to comments that could be construed as disrespectful.

one tip to add on: always do one thing on your face . like brows, or just do foundation or lipstick , or bronzer. ( of course with your daily face routine) . its minimal but it doesn't feel like a sick day then!
