Pre collision braking has nearly killed me twice. Once when going around a curve the eyesight saw a sign on the edge of the road and read it as an obstacle and slammed on the brakes. A semi trailer behind me only just managed to stop before rear ending me. The second time a similar event with a car in the opposite lane on a curve caused the braking to activate. The vehicles behind me had to swerve to avoid my stationary vehicle. Now I have this feature switched off permenantly, it is dangerous.

Same here. Also happened to me a few times when my Forester slammed on the brakes to a complete stop when it sensed a non-existent object in front or besides me or when the roadway narrowed. Very fortunate that no one was directly behind me in each incident otherwise would’ve been very serious accidents.

If you have a dash car in your car don't place it close to the eyesight camera. For some reason it triggers the camera. I used to experience this and after the dealership recommended I change the location I never experienced it again until I moved it back to the mirror area.

Pre-collision generally (not Subaru specifically) is good at preventing collisions up to 45 mph, and the feds are considering requiring carmakers to make it work well up to 65 mph. Carmakers are saying, bad idea, because slamming on the brakes sooner to avoid a collision at 65 mph will mean more false reads and rear-end collisions. And the feds want to remove the option to turn it off.

The problem with the eyesight system is that it does not have millimeter radar. I read that the system can be liable to malfunction in bright light. So can you imagine it's a lovely sunny day in the summer and suddenly because the cameras cannot handle the bright light they malfunction and hit your brakes. That's just crazy. I have never had my Toyota ever do anything crazy at all. It has the radar and the cameras as does Mazda and I think also Volvo has it that way. I think Subaru is the only one that realized solely on cameras. I think that's a horrible decision on their part and one reason why I never bought one.

Really love the eyesight lane centering and adaptive cruise control in stop and go traffic in my '24. Set the acceleration to eco and turn the follow distance all the way up. It's so nice to just have to keep a hand on the wheel and foot ready for the break. So much less fatiguing.

I have a 2021 crosstrek limited, the eye sight saved me a few times. Sometimes people suddenly switch into my lane without using turn signals even though there’s little space for merge, and one time someone road raging quickly cut in front of me and brake checked me, eyesight saved me.

I love the safety offered in newer vehicles. I have a 2025 Forster Premium WITHOUT the emergency steering and blind spot but that's okay. I would probably turn it off anyways. I turn off the auto stop/start, SRH, and auto headlights. I rarely use cruise but when I go long distances, I do and this system is pretty great (even better than Toyota IMO). If you don't like it you can go back to regular cruise control by a hack that you/Alex have/has mentioned before. The forward collision warning part has alerted me a few times but has never stopped for me because I am 99% paying attention. That 1% I am not, I am confident in my Subaru that it will do it's thing. Thanks for another great video Alex! I am very curious to see the new Outback and how that will stack up against the existence of the Ascent.

I have a 2024 Crosstrek Onyx (Canadian version of the U.S. sport with a few more standard features) that also includes the new third wide angle camera. I hav encountered three unintended consequences of this wide angle camera. 1) Driving on a two lane highway, solid middle line, coming up to a side road, the middle line becomes dotted and the solid line veers to the left to create a left turn lane. The adaptive cruise unexpectedly pulled my car to the left, I assume it continued reading the solid line as opposed to keeping the car in the lane and following the straight line. 2) Driving on an interstate, right lane adaptive cruise on, there is an exit to the right. The line along the shoulder follows the exit, there is no dotted line on the right side, middle line is dotted, the car unexpectedly pulled to the right. 3) On a two lane road, up ahead is a car on the shoulder, fully off the driving lane, and eyesight braked hard, although there was not car in front of me.

I was just reading about your examples 1 & 2 in another forum this week. Those 2 situations happen when we have the automatic Lane Centering function on…it’s not the adaptive cruise control. I don’t use lane centering unless I’m highway driving like Alex showed in the video.

New feature I found in my 2025 Outback. The blind spot detection helps a lot in five lane traffic, however the other day I thought I had clearance after I went around a semi. I was obviously not clear as the blind spot detector flashed triple time as well as an audio alert. I’ve never done that before and my 2022 probably had it but I never neded it. My friend had a serious accident, in spite of the Eye Sight on his 2019 Legacy. He was driving home late at night, and came up on a pickup pulling a trailer, stopped in his lane, with absolutely ZERO lights visible. He rear ended that trailer at nearly 70 mph. If Subaru would incorporate a radar based system, alongside the Eye Sight system, his accident could have likely been avoided.

Does Pre-Throttle Management sense if you're actually turning a bit to the right or left to go around the car ahead of you? I can think of common situations where you're pretty close to a stationary vehicle in front of you, and you accelerate and start turning but for a few moments you're still squarely behind the car. Does the system perceive that you're also moving laterally and NOT meaning to slam into the car ahead?

I was driving my 24 Forester Sport and had a truck turning off the road in front of me and I proceeded to drive around them on the shoulder as they were turning but my Subaru deemed it a threat and locked up brakes and down shifted the CVT instantly. It threw me forward and rattled me because I didnt know what happened. The problem is there was no chance of hitting the truck that was turning. The down side is the huge Ram 2500 behind had to lock up brakes and thought I brake checked him. He almost rear ended my new car. In my state it is legal to go around on the shoulder when a car is turning.

@alexpmo Thanks for the video. I hadn't heard of the Automatic Emergency Steering but verified my '23 Ascent Limited has it. I love the adaptive cruise control on Subarus. It saved me one time in my '16 Legacy (which my daughter now has) when I was in the left lane on the highway and traffic came to a halt very quickly. The car started braking before I did and it stopped before hitting the car in front of me. The car in back of me only avoided me by turning to the left on the shoulder. They weren't so lucky as they were hit by the car behind them. Do you know if it is possible to change the cruise control operation for 2019 Outbacks to match how changing set speeds work for current models? My mom has a '19 Outback which I drive on long road trips a few times a year and I find it annoying how speed increases / decreases work opposite of our '23 Ascent where a momentary press up or down changes your set speed by 5 MPH compared to 1 MPH on the Ascent, and holding the button up or down changes it by 1 MPH compared to 5 MPH for the Ascent. Our '16 Legacy, even though slightly different in that there are 2 positions up and 2 positions down, is very similar to our Ascent.

Subaru is known for its safety and advanced technology, yet it misses a key feature: built-in dash cameras for recording front and rear views. While the car has multiple cameras for assistance, none record for safety or evidence. Adding this would cost only a few hundred dollars but provide immense benefits, such as accident documentation, liability protection, and potentially lower insurance premiums. Relying on aftermarket dash cams is inconvenient and less integrated. Including this feature would enhance Subaru’s safety leadership. Big disappointment.

The lane centering does not work well for us on our 2025 Forester Touring. I have slightly drooping eyelids, and the driver monitoring always shuts off on me within a couple of miles. I have had my eyelids surgically corrected, and I am fine for driving, but my eyelids still look thick. The driver monitoring still registers that my eyes are closed. I have to turn off driver monitoring because it constantly warns me that I need to rest. We have also found that the system does not work well with many types of sunglasses. Polarized sunglasses seem to be the worst, but any sunglasses tend to interfere with use of lane control.

In bad conditions with POOR visibility, Eye sight system may not function, and warns you of same. A common cause is heavy "fogging" on wind screen in front of cameras. Hi Alex, As a two time owner of a Crosstrek, I'm more than grateful for your presentations. I've made my dealership (#1 Cochran Subaru) aware of your videos. All the best this Thanksgiving Holiday. "The JJ" SW Penna.

Can emergency breaking be turned off when backing up?
@alexpmo
@alexpmo Ай бұрын
@@bjcamp485 yes, not every Subaru has reverse auto braking but it can be turned off for the ones that do have it. Here’s a video to show how to turn it off: kzbin.infoNlxnZeAFL0s?si=5M5T2fqeqLEi1ycl

Could side radar activate emergency braking system if it sees lamppost next to driveway? I sometimes get a loud banging and emergency braking in reverse when nothing shows on back-up cameras.

Sorry, Alex for my rant. I like my 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Sport. I really don't care for the start/stop feature. Again I apologize for what I had written, and by no means, is this a reflection on you or any dealership in or near your state. I hope you notice it's the finance division at the Subaru dealership in my state. I don't want to name shame any business.

Hi Alex Automatic Emergency Steering So many wife’s 2020 Outback Onyx XT wouldn’t have it? Would my 2024 Forester Sport have it? I don’t recall seeing on the window sticker. Thank you.
@alexpmo
@alexpmo Ай бұрын
I believe this first came out on the 24 Forester so unfortunately I don't think your 2020 Outback would have it. Your 24 Forester may have it but you would also need to have the Sport trim with the blind spot detection to have the emergency steering.

Subaru doesn’t not have cross traffic alert standard on all trims. That would improve safety.

I want to say someone should provide a safety sheet on getting refunds on a thing like GAP insurance after you pay off your vehicle and the dealership receives the paperwork from your financial institution but doesn't accept what has been sent and slow walks the paperwork not to issue a refund. There are no penalties for early payoff. My CU has been very helpful, but my Subaru dealership finance department is no help. Unless you get a better deal from the deslership on finance interest rate, don't agree to more products than you need before OTD. Yes, I contacted Subaru of America, and they said I must deal with the dealership. Thank God my loan was simple, but seeking this GAP refund is an unnecessary headache. I waited six to seven weeks and resent with the help of my CU the paperwork they provide as proof of no lien and vehicle is paid off.😮😪🤔

I’ll believe Subaru takes safety seriously when they add an audible warning to the blind spot monitoring. My six year old Hyundai has it and my ten year old Mazda has it. What is Subaru waiting for?
@sounderdavis5446
@sounderdavis5446 Ай бұрын
My 2023 Wilderness has audible warning when blind spot monitoring is flashing in a side-view mirror, and my turn signal is on to go into that lane. Your Subie doesn't? I don't mind the flashing but wouldn't want audio beeping every time a car was next to me on the highway. That would be too much for me.

@@sounderdavis5446That’s good to know. I asked a Subaru rep at the NY Auto show a couple of years ago and he said I’m not the first to ask for it and I test drove a Subaru this year and asked the long time salesman who told me Subaru doesn’t have it.

Since the advent of cruise control, all vehicle manufacturers have had owner-manual warnings against using cruise control in rain, snow, ice, etc., so Subaru is just being proactive and protective.

@@skiergalwny No i was saying that the safety features with Subaru Eyesight allow you to look down at your phone while you drive because it will alert you when you're getting too close to a vehicle or object, or if you're going across lanes, if the car infront of you moves from a stop, you get constant alerts. And you can set it up so that the steering wheel keeps you in the lane you're in with lane assist to keep you from drifting. Subaru is a GREAT car with awesome safety features!
I had NO IDEA you could do this HANDS-FREE on Subaru
