I got a check engine light on my ‘14 impala - no other symptoms. Bought a tester at the local store for about $35. Got error code P0496. Bought purge valve on rockauto for about $27 including shipping. That was over a month ago, no more check engine light.

Great video, only thing I would add after dealing with emission codes on my Cadillac Dts. Make sure you get GM genuine parts like sensors or a purge valve. I changed everything from a pump to the check valve and all the sensors. Turned out to be one of the cheap sensors wasn't working correctly and that was throwing my code.

Wanted to add that I'm currently dealing with a bad purge valve in a 2014 Hyundai Accent and I noticed occasionally the cabin wreaked of gas fumes

Wow I had a 2014 tacoma that started trying to stall out at red lights and difficulty starting after fuel ups and had to pump the accelerator while starting to get it to crank over. Went to toyota and to another mechanic and toyota did the 3 point fuel injection cleaning but didnt fix issue and other mechanic said put fuel additives in or use top tier fuel like Chevron but that also didnt help. I traded the truck in and all that time it was the fkg purge valve based on this video...funny part a friend who builds cars (works on his own vehicles) recently said the same thing. I swear getting a proper diagnostic that fixes an issue from a paid mechanic is nearly always a scam for a more expensive repair or to just avoid the work and get you off the lot for a diagnostic fee knowing they didnt fix the issue.

My 07 yukon xl is hissing (blowing fumes out) for up to 5 mins after I remove the recently replaced gas cap to fill it up. I do not drive it often, 3-4x a week to the grocery store although after AFM delete i start it daily just because of the pain that repair was...I'm not sure where to start other than the purge valve

.I hear a screeching sound coming from my gas tank and then my idle drops and it has cut off on me when slowing down to a stop. I thought this was the fuel pump so I replaced it and then shortly after it began again though the idle it stronger but it still drops my idle when it happens. Also, I replaced the purge valve solenoid as I get the error code for that off and on. Any thoughts?

Yes, in some cases, gas can be smelled. Often though, when gas is smelled, the charcoal canister or vent valve is bad.

What about intermittent poor or “weak” starts? Did an obd2 I/M readiness test and evap is not passing, however I do not have any codes besides a 0141- not sure they’re related I believe that’s electrical. Thanks

A stuck open purge valve is the only Evap component that can affect the engine, but it usually causes rich codes such as P0172 / P0175.

Thanks for vid, I got a 2020 chevy equinox, check engine light, codes were PO449 and PO498. I replaced the evap solenoid valve at the canister, that got rid of the PO449 but not the po498, it says evap solenoid valve low voltage. Could a bad purge valve cause a low voltage error code?

It needs to be troubleshooted, but it looks like an issue with the vent valve and not the purge valve. If the vent valve is good, I would test the wiring.

Find your intake, observe and trace all the hoses less than an 1inch in diameter that lead away from it. The solenoid is as big as the palm of your hand.1 inlet, one outlet, and one electrical connection.

Hey Bro. My wife's 2003 tahoe started throwing the P0442 code last week. Vehicle ran fine for about 5 days. Today, I went out to start it for her(cold Idaho morning), and now it just turns over but no ignition. Anything you can tell me pertaining this code that would cause it to just not ignite? It should still start and run with a P0442 EVAP code; there must be another issue. If the purge valve gets stuck open, it may cause it to run rich or idle rough, but it would still run.

When I fill up it sometimes will kick the pump off I can hold the pump at like 90% and it won’t click off but if I fill it up too fast it’ll kick off the pump and there is a tick coming from my engine bay and I have mildly crappy gas mileage

Same here also feels like it has a problem like not down shifting kinda feels like o2 sensor failing or your in to high a gear going to not going fast enough. I knew it’s was air/fuel issue. Got my codes read and this is the only issue!

@@Wrapsession if it makes an odd tick not the vvt tick but a tick that sounds like bad nock almost it’s probably your evap purge sylenoid try unplugging it and seeing if it stops because once you unplug it it’s no longer trying to do whatever it does and it goes quiet stupid emissions bs

While anything is possible, I have never seen that happen. They are a part of two different systems; the MAF sensor detects airflow coming into the engine, while the Purge Valve is a part of the EVAP system.

If the purge valve is stuck open, it can cause the engine to run rich and, depending on the engine, may cause misfires.

The Purge Valve will be in the engine bay, while the Vent Valve will be under the vehicle near the gas tank, usually combined with the charcoal canister. Both would need to be tested to see if they failed.

So I have a 98 Nissan Sentra I'm getting a p0440 code, I don't smell any gas but I'm definitely getting les mpg than I should and my car is sluggish when accelerating, for some reason it seems like it's worse on a hot day, for example in the mornings when it's not too hot it's not so sluggish but when I get done with work and it's hot, at first it's super sluggish and as I start driving it gets a bit better? A P0440 code is an EVAP Leak so I would try to find the leak. There are KZbin videos on DIY smoke machines that make finding an EVAP leak easier.

@@renerubio5073 A P1448 code is the Vent Valve which is located on the charcoal canister. Evap codes usually don't affect engine performance much but sometimes can cause an issue. For example, if the purge valve is stuck open and there is a leak, it can cause an intake manifold leak. That is rare, but it does happen.

code po446. how would that be fixed. i think its the vent valve near canister. someone said the actual purge valve solenoid will never ever fix code po446 when replaced alone. ill have my mechanic look over my car evap system. its not a gas cap cause i have tested those.

My 2017 renegade won't let me fill it all the way up. When i do, once I'm driving, it chokes. And it's hard to crank. As long as you giving it gas its fine, but soon as you pull to a red light or stop sign, it shuts off. Also got a code of p0441
