1. Stopped the curly girl method and started shampooing again 2. Using light protein treatments on a regular basis (every wash day) 3. Trim often, every 3months. It helped in detangling, less breakage 4. Opting for twists over braids because they are gentler on scalp and hair strands 5. Avoid bending the twists

Ashley Mari Makeup yeah that's true as well but I look at her comment in the viewpoint of people who comment on videos sometimes asking for a lot or even demanding more videos like they're in control of her making videos. I follow lots of naturalists on YT, so if one if busy living their life and can't bless us with a video, I can still watch others. I look at it as a disclaimer because some people do get caught up and forget that not everyone on YT is doing it as a full time job.

@@jasw3701 I went through the same thing. My roots come in gray so I know when new growth comes in. It was about 2 months I had no growth at all, no breakage, I always did protective styles. I switched my vitamins and the growth is so rapid, I have to color every 10 days. I can't say if it was due to the supplement change or ending of the telogen phase, I just know that I did go through a plateau.

@@jasw3701 I know this is an old comment on a old video but this is only half true. Only ~15% of your hairs are in the telogen phase at any time. If all your hairs were in the same phase all the time, then every few years all your hairs would shed lol

I love that you acknowledged it as a plateau even after a year instead of saying, "Oh this must be my terminal length." People talk about terminal length and it just doesn't make sense to me. Hair is always growing from the scalp (yeah, yeah different strands on different cycles, some are dormant at times but at any time, lots are growing) so if you retain your ends, I think anyone can grow their hair down to their feet if they want to, it's just a matter of adapting and figuring out what works for you. Like I really don't believe in terminal length.

I don't do protein treatments anymore. I just use a fortifying conditioner - Coconut or Keratin from Ogx (sometimes Garnier) - with bi-weekly hot hemp+avocado oil treatments. I used to use Henna (every 3 months) with weekly hot hemp+avocado oil treatments, but my hair has more elasticity and strength with the other method (conditioner & hot oil)

@@niadumas3868 you don’t need protein treatments unless your hair is high porosity. Low porosity hair doesn’t really need protein treatments and do not trim your hair ever 3 months like she say. Please trim your hair ONLY when needed. If you trim regular you won’t have retention ( length).

Yea I used to cowash and like you said it didn't feel right. So I eventually went back to shampooing too but with sulfate free and once a month I use a shampoo with a sulfate shampoo. And yesss to trimming! Trimming/Dusting more often really does help! And you actually retain more length by trimming 1/4 every 3 months that's only 1 inch by the end of the year. Rather than having to cut 2+ inches after a whole year of no trimming cause of all the splitting.

What are you all doing that is causing your hair to split? Are you over using brushes and combs (number one cause of split ends)? I was trimming my hair very often because of all the videos talking about split ends, but then I thought to myself "I've never actually seen a split end in my own hair". I started to gather all my shed hairs on wash day, and I have yet to actually see a end that is split. I finger detangle 100% of the time and I've incorporated the baggy method. Now, I only dust away ssks.

Trimming is the business. You are spot on, on that one. When your ends are clean cut and not sticking together, you get little mechanical damage. Have had several platues over the 6 almost 7 years of being natural. Not knowing any better i shaved my head when I got frustrated (every single time!) 😤😭😈 Now I know better. If I hit that wall again, I will hanker down, and figure out what to adjust.

I always have to tweak my regimen and practices to get to the next level. The older the hair gets, the more careful I have to be about keeping it. I appreciate your perspective because you offered such specific things. I can say that I can definitely testify to the first 4. The last one was especially food for thought for me. I feel you. I go through the same struggle. It feels like I'm doomed to cut a significant amount of my hair too often because the split ends are crazy. Sigh. I just "trimmed" my hair yesterday and I'm left with about two inches. People say it will grow back, but It seems ill only need to cut it when I see significant growth again. This was not supposed to be a rant.lol

Great tips especially the twist instead of braids. I always say Twist are gentler on the hair but I always end up braiding because of the elongation. I think I have to take that tip more seriously.

OMYGOD YES, I fell for the cg method too and ended up with *Hygral fatigue* which is overmoisturized hair, my 3c curls literally disappeared, my hair became limp, mushy, and breakage-prone. I've been trying to repair it since and YES to trimming, I trim my own hair because I am SO tired of supposed *pros* ruining my ends and hair in general. Thank you for this video and you and your hair are GORGEOUS!! :)

I have seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff) and can't co-wash. My scalp would be on fire if I used anything other than shampoo to wash my hair/scalp. I like you thought my hair didn't need protein, but I've noticed since using the green beauty protein weekly, I've acquired less and less split ends AND my hair is shinier and more silky. Also, I need to get back to working out. The blood flow to the scalp helps a lot with transmitting minerals needed for hair growth. And I'm going to try going back to twists. I've been doing braids because I love the stretch, but I'll go back and see if detangling is just as easy with those.

@lilbaby245
@lilbaby245 7 жыл бұрын
+The_B-Dub I do a myriad of things. I understand that this type of dandruff is more internal than anything. I just recently learned that I'm not eating enough fruit. So I started doing that through my smoothies and noticed my dandruff go down tremendously. Almost stop. I read that people who have seborrheic dermatitis lack vitamins b6, biotin and zinc. Also, I drink alkalized water. To do that, I add a fulvic/humic acid blend to my water along with some chloroxygen drops. For topical treatment, I wash my hair with black soap or any black soap shampoo. And to help keep it at bay more through the week, I apply JBCO to my scalp and message it in.

I have it too ugh it sucks and just realized that SD is why I have thin hair. Also the reason I had to cut my locs. Have you tried garlic shampoos and conditioners? They say SD is a over growth of yeast and garlic kills yeast. And my dermatologist told me not to oil the scalp because SD is the scalp producing to much oil... but I feel I need it. Try light oils nothing heavy or it will make it worse
@lilbaby245
@lilbaby245 7 жыл бұрын
JBCO is a heavy oil, but because of the acids, and I want to say the ash, it helps. The high amounts of yeast are the culprit in this kind of dandruff, so I will add stay away from yeasty foods. So breads and alcohol are a NO. And that really hurts a bread lover like me. I will say that Berlin Natural Bakery's sourdough spelt bread is the ONLY bread I can eat that won't flair up my dandruff. I haven't tried any garlic shampoos/conditioners only because any liquid African black soap/shampoo does the job.

Depressed is an understatement. Been natural since Dec 2011 and my hair is STILL rarely bra strap. I have cut and trimmed and basically started over a MILLION times. Yes I neglected it at FIRST, lack of product knowledge or understanding my hair. Moving forward, I finally cut it AGAIN in July 2017 and tried to maintain it, wigs/ washes weekly or big weekly.. Got a silk press in Dec 2017 she said it needed a MAJOR trim!!!!! Sigh! How??? Same, wash, wigs... March 2018 I decide to get faux locs. I wore the first set for 6 weeks took my hair outer it breathe for a week and got them right back, work those 6 weeks, washed my hair and go them AGAIN for the third time the NEXT DAY. I got those July 2, 2018 and I JUST took those out on Sept 5, 2018... Got my hair blown out ONLY on Sept 8, 2018 and when I t3ll u my hair is PAPER thin, and HORRIBLY split! The thinnest it's ever been, even thinner then when I wasn't taking care of it!!!! I trimmed the ends last night in tears!!! I don't even know if I trimmed enough. I'm not right back to square ONE. My hair for 2 years is STILL on the same spot but now 50 times thinner after what I thought was protecting and helping my hair. I'm super depressed this morning and trying to watch videos to help me. I don't know what to do. Hair can really depress you I didn't know until today. I give up.

Natasha P. Awh , don’t give up sweetheart. Just do less. Remember some protective styles aren’t that protective anyway . More hair requires more product , especially if you have Type 4 hair . So water , deep conditioner daily or ever other day and seal with a oil . Wear a simple low manipulation style like a few twists or two braids and within a week you’ll see a difference.

When u use lots of heat and pulling on ur hair, that causes lots of damage and the Locs, in and out ,may have had something to do with it ....especially if u don't take care of ur hair while they're in. I big chopped my hair after a body wave and started over. Just shampoo, and condition with some oil after...massaging it in. Twist it up and protect ur ends. Wear it with pretty head bans or wraps until it starts growing back thick. I pray that it will.

Have you tried collagen on your hair? I just tried it yesterday and I see a difference. My hair feels strong, but not hard and it was less harsh than a hard core protein treatment. I used 1 tbsp hydrolyzed collagen, 1 tbsp coconut oil, 1 tbsp avocado oil, 1 tbsp grape seed oil, 1 tbsp hot water and aloe juice. Let it sit on my hair 30 minutes then shampoo.

Beautiful hair!! I just got through my growth plateau. I just beat it by keeping hair washed weekly and adding peppermint.y hair prefer grease as well, no butters. My hair I realize now loves to be super clean and baked soda and apple cyber vinegar and product that fights dandruff. It only likes certain oils like argan, and olive oil, and and take biotin pills and now fish oil. My hair also Loooooove peppermint. I have very thick 4c hair, with major shrinkage. I also notice when I was blowing out my hair with hot oil, my hair was growing super fast. I also wash my hair in hot water. My leave in conditioner is argan oil with peppermint and other hair growing oil. I have decided to add sulfate 8 shampoo and sulfur I grease. I am adding my peppermint and hair growth oils to my sulfur 8 grease and massage daily as I watch my favorite show before bed.

Wow! I used to go through the same whenever I shampooed, with it feeling crazy for days, but for me i needed to do the opposite, I find washing my hair once or twice a week has been a dream instead of once or twice per month. Detangling is like nothing, and I started to bun my hair in March (seeing the protective style Jan vid late) I retained 3 inches in 5 months, in some parts of my hair, the last 1.5 since July when I applied my new shampoo technique.

My hair would grow to shoulder length then break off. Happened for years and until I finally started taking care of my own hair. I'm at a point now where I can't get past BSL but I know me so I have to come up with a low maint. regimen that I'm going to stick with even after I start to see results. I'm committed to ensuring my hair is healthy but I'm also lazy, so I know things finger detangling won't work for me.

Great video. I lost you for just a little bit but finally found. I'm at a stall right now. I've been twisting my hair mainly for years, but I think I was missing something in my diet because I kept having hair breakage issues. I DO henna monthly and love it, but I do use a bit more protein now than previously and I also just got a trim, but I'm not too happy with the stylist because she had to flat-iron my hair to trim it and I'm still only 95% back to koily. It's weird my mother (bless her soul who wasn't a stylist) pressed my hair straight for years and I never once had heat damage, and for some reason this professional said it might take a few cleanses to get my curls back. Heck I've used shampoo four times in two weeks and still have some weird spots. The next trim will have to be with someone who trims while in our natural state or something along those lines, at least until I can learn from your trimming video. Glad to be back and you look great, love the hair.

I subscribed to your channel because you said "there is no credibility to the idea trimming your hair makes it grow...." and everything you said related to trimming. I agree because I never trim my hair and my hair continuously grows. My protective style is chunky twists with my natural hair. I pre-poo, shampoo, deep condition in chunky twists because it makes the detangling process easy. Afterwards I put leave-in conditioner as I re-do each chunky twist. I repeat the process once a month. When I'm not doing that to my hair, to keep my hair moisturized I shower without a shower cap so that water gets to all my hair which in turn re-activates the leave-in conditioner I put in that month.

she's absolutely right about how one thing works for some, but not for others. I tried finger detangling and really wanted it to work, but it's just not for me. I detangle my hair every day and it was taking too much of my time, so I switched back to using a wide tooth comb. I did end up using shampoo and conditioner (after finding the right shampoo and conditioner) instead of just coswashing and I think it's helped retain my curls. I don't use any type of protective styles because I don't want to disrupt any of my curl patterns. But again, this works for me. Best advise I can give is to just listen to your hair.

I think my hair growth plateau us due to stress because for 6 months I've been doing everything right. This time last year my hair reach bra strap but I had a ton of split ends that I didn't trim immediately and I paid the price. I also used heat more last school year so I had to trim more. In may of 2017 I cut an 1 1/2 for a fresh start. Went from 15 inches to 13 1/2. my hair grew to 14 1/2 and maybe close to 15. September I trimmed it back to 14 1/2 but here it is November and I'm still at 14 1/2. This is my first semester of nursing school so I'm pretty sure the stress I encountered around September until now is why my hair stopped growing.

trimming "helps your hair grow" because as you air splits it spits up, as your hair grows it Gros down. so if you never trip you split ends it seems like your hair is not growing but it is, it is just growing at the same rate it's splitting. if your hair is trimmed and not slitting you will notice it is growing.

I need to get past my hair plateau it's been shoulder length for years and I have been getting regular trims about every 2 months. I may not be seeing my hair stylist for a while because she brushes my hair when its wet to detangle it and that causes breakage. I have tried for years to get my hair to the middle of my back but it just stays at shoulder length, so I will deep condition it more because that does help a lot with managing my hair.

I completely agree with the co-washing thing. I tried it as a shampoo substitute, and it totally did not work. I find that I have to cleanse my scalp once a week, otherwise it gets very itchy (and I can't imagine allowing that buildup would be any good for my hair). How do you feel about substituting shampoo with mud washes (like rhassoul clay)? I tried it over the weekend, and I have to say that the results weren't terrible. I'm just worried that over time my scalp will freak out like it did when I cowashed.

wow, that last tip just might be the game changer! I'm currently at a plateau, actually, I've lost some ground due to lack of length retention. I almost always wear my hair in a loose-ish low ponytail where I loop the ends partially through. it ends up putting pressure on about an inch of my ends (i use the rubberized ponytail holders). I'll see if switching to a softer material helps first or else I'll have to come up with another super easy-for-me style (though I'm currently at a loss as to what that would be). tfs! love your videos!❤✌
