One year we invited our neighbors over (a nice African American family who were our neighbors as long as i could remember), they were empty nesters their kids had just gone to collage. They were very happy and asked if they could bring something so my mom just said you know bring whatever you feel like we have plenty. They showed up with a pan of mac and cheese and it blew my 10 year old mind. I was not a aware you were allowed to have mac and cheese on thanksgiving just because it was never a thing in my family... needless to say now that im an adult we have it every year.

That's because watching your dad actually mash the potatoes when you were 3 or 4 has stayed with you until you die. Pops doing the rhythmic circular mash-and-scoop with the masher, stopping to add just the right amount of butter and milk, getting just the right amount of mash-and-chunk, all that is tradition for the family. Mashing taters has become the visual signal that all is right in the world, and that the Almighty does love us. So, yes we "do taters" with our souls. And everyone gets the benefit of potatoes made up in all their possible glory. P.S. try some with halved and chopped garlic cloves, saute'd with butter before adding to the mash.....oh yeah!

@gg51155 жыл бұрын
@001 002 Yes, a well known fact, that has little to do with anything. Also, more men than women work. Men dominate a number of professions, cooking included. Most painters, sculptors, farmers, clothiers, and so on, are also men. I guess you are prepared to say that men are innately superior in all those occupations as well. Josh, don’t you doubt, there was leftovers like you wouldn’t believe. If it was a big family thanksgiving, there’s a fridge in the garage with two extra turkeys and a whole ham, 3 or 4 casseroles, and all the sides that they had just in case they needed more food than they could fit on the big ass dining room table. All pre-cooked and ready to heat up and serve.
@Kaelland5 жыл бұрын
First of all, love the videos, Josh. Thank you for doing them. Second, let me tell you about some Thanksgiving leftovers at a white family's Thanksgiving. We used to have 11 people at Thanksgiving every year. Despite that, and despite distributing the leftovers as evenly as possible, our family of 5 would be eating Thanksgiving leftovers until Christmas. And my mama wouldn't cook as long as there was leftovers. Oh, sure, she'd throw together some instant mashed potatoes when the leftover real mashed potatoes ran out, but we'd be working on turkey and ham for a month. And right as that ran out, we'd have a big Christmas dinner with all of the same people eating all of the same food, and another round of leftovers that we'd be eating on until close to February. And we'd probably be working on them longer, but eventually, my dad would complain enough to convince mom to finally feed the rest of the leftovers to the dogs and cook something else.

Man tell ya what. Secret to good mashed potatoes is using the right potatoes. They all have a different texture when boiled. Drain all of the water when they are done, get yourself a masher, doesn't matter if it's designed for mashing potatoes or not just something that can mash and leave a few clumps for texture. Once they're cooked and strained put in the pot you used to boil them, add enough sour cream to change the color of the potatoes and make them whiter, butter to taste, salt, pepper, and most importantly onion powder and granulated garlic, as well as heavy whipping cream or whole milk. Just enough to thin them out a bit so they don't dry and get clumpy to soon.
@kencramer16975 жыл бұрын
I like the sound of that recipe. A simple straight forward mashed potato is hard to go wrong with. And you are correct, some potatoes don't do well mashed. Russet's work well if they are peeled and are great for those nice white creamy potatoes. Yukon gold have more of a buttery flavor and work well with the skin on in a "country style"

Wyte people’s mashed potatoes: Start with a starchy potato like a Golden or a Russet. Peal and slice into chunks approximately 1 1/2 inch in size. Place chunks into cool salted water. Bring to a boil. Boil potatoes until you can easily slice a chunk with the edge of the spoon or ladle you are stirring the potatoes with. Drain well. Add butter, cream cheese, sour cream and garlic salt. Mash only until ingredients are combined and the mashed potatoes contain small to medium chunks. Do not over mash or whip or the potatoes will become gummy.

My grandma does both. I about died this thanksgiving, she said, "Lord, thank you for this food. Amen." I was like grandma, that was a prayer you could have said every time you get groceries, what you doing??? LMAO I'm not even religious, but shit, if you believe, then BELIEVE.

🔴We "bright" people usually go around the room and say what we're thankful for on Thanksgiving, but there's pressure to not ramble on, just be concise and move on to the next person before the food gets cold, Amen!

You’re doing it wrong; in every family there are the types that will turn it into thee sermon, but there are also those relatives that don’t want to wait to eat, suggest that one of those relatives pray, use an excuse, “Dad, Uncle Ted just got back from Afghanistan two months ago, I think he should pray.” UNCLE TED: “lord bless this food and this family, and keep all our brothers and sisters in the military at home and abroad in your thoughts and safe through these holidays. Amen and pass the ammo.”

josh....we use a double, hand held, mixing blender. the kind you would use to whip cake icing. then we whip them potatoes(with milk) until they are super creamy.....now you know. you can share the secret, but if you keep it to yourself, then you will be the man at the next dinner you hold. or bring them to the next dinner
