Adopting a whole food plant-based diet is one of the best choices you can make to improve your overall health and well-being. While it's actually quite easy in practice, there's a lot of misinformation out there promoted by the food and diet industries, which require shift in mindset around diet and nutrition. Today we're sharing 5 things we wish we'd known before going plant-based.

I am terrible at prepping for a week. I find I do better if I make a pot of chili or stew, and eat it until it's gone. Then I make something else, same thing. Maybe I'm just lazy but this seems to work out for me.

Good tips. When I went plant based 7 years ago, the first thing I did was to ramp up my garden and gardening/preserving skills here in WA. I learned that real food tastes so much better when you don't eat crap, and especially when it's home grown. To the point now where I only eat things I grow or things ordered (grains and other dry goods) from Azure. At 62, never felt better and am still actively hiking, biking, open water swimming, skiing, running, and doing all the things I always have - plus a full time job and maintaining the gardens/orchard. This way of eating really is the key to good health and quality of life, especially in the latter years.

I am currently transitioning and here's one thing that made it extremely frustrating for me when I first started. These replacements, like Vegan Scalloped Potatoes, for instance. No one except you ever says "This will not taste the same. " How many times was I disappointed and discouraged when I put a lot of time and effort making these things only to find out they tasted "weird." My number one gripe is Nutritional Yeast. STOP saying it tastes like cheese. It does NOT. Now that I understand this, it's fine. I can make things without the expectation that it will taste like animal products. Just decide if it tastes good or not and enjoy the flavors of plant products without trying to duplicate the animal flavors. IMO, this is the worst thing the vegan community does to newbies. Had I not been determined, I would have said, "This is a bunch of crap" and given up. Sorry for the rant. Maybe this will help other newbies.

I remember when we went plant-based after my husband’s heart attack, I gave many kitchen items away. Since I couldn’t imagine cheeseless pizza, I gave away our pizza stone. And the same for our loaf and cake pans, because who can make breads and cakes without oil, eggs and butter? Hello, I can!! We eat all the meals now, tacos and enchiladas and casseroles and sushi and even Hungarian goulash with soy curls! The only thing we can’t make vegan is a plant-based version of a carcass of turkey or chicken or pork roast, which is gross to us now anyway. But I can make some mean cauliflower hot wings. It takes time to learn how to do this well. Don’t give up. Just keep eating healthy plant-based foods as if your life depends on it, and eventually your cooking skills will work themselves out. Until then there is Well Your World.

I wish my husband and i had known the difference between being vegan and plant based, we "went vegan" and gained 30 lbs. Now we understand that veganism is a moral stand point, not about what you eat. Although we agree with vegan views our goal was to get healthy but we got stuck in a "well, its vegan so lets eat it" mindset. But we are on track now, Ive lost 20+ pounds since Sept 3rd and none of my husbands pants fit him anymore. Not to mention how amazing we feel, we no longer crave sugar and salt ( although we do miss some foods we dont crave them) and ive kicked my caffiene addiction!

Prepping does not work for me because I may not be in the mood for what I prepped for and then I have waste lol. I have found that having the things I like on hand and available while making sure the bad foods are not in my pantry has helped me stay on task. I do food prep but I don't prep finished dishes. I prep what I consider complicated ingredients. Like for example I love making Chana Masala (chickpea curry) but I never eat it on its own. I always incorporate it in a salad, burrito, buddha bowl, stuffed pita, etc. Same goes with prepping rice and beans or farro salads, etc. Everything I make lasts about a week or so but I make sure they're versatile enough so I can use them in various ways. I agree with you though that if I had to survive on a lasagna for a week I'd get bored pretty quick.

"You can just listen to your body", he says. I hear this phrase a lot, and unfortunately, my body wants to drink beer and eat corn chips for dinner. It likes to eat throughout the day, healthy stuff like fruit and nuts, but still, stuff that makes me fat. I think that my body probably has a lot less to do with it than my psychology and conditioning does.

I just love your videos. One thing I wish I knew was that there is a difference between whole food plant based and vegan and vegetarian diets. I have long held the belief that a diet is what you eat, either good or bad. So when I was looking to incorporate more vegetables in my diet, I collected a lot of vegan/vegetarian cookbooks and visited blogs and websites but was so disappointed in the number of recipes that made things similar to the very thing that is supposed to be eliminated...which is meat. I thought for sure a vegan/vegetarian would have tasty ways of making vegetable dishes. I was disheartened. Fast forward years later and I found you two...through the KZbin rabbit hole and algorithm. So glad I did. I'm a newbie so I am starting with your starch blaster and your vegetable stew recipes. Simple. I did discover that I need to make a smaller batch of the starch blaster. I made a six quart version using only three starches (cuz that's what I had on hand) and it was a bit much for me right now. I'll scale it back next time. Any how, I'm stocked up on frozen veggies ready for the vegetable stew. One last thing, I found that Walmart sells dehydrated veg stew mix in a large container...for anyone interested and unable to find in bulk at Winco Thank you for great content. It is so helpful for beginners like me.

Probably what I needed to learn was how to replace fat with flavor. That led me into making a lot of Indian, Middle Eastern, and Mexican style recipes. So many of the traditional foods from those cultures is plant based anyway, so there was no real effort spent "veganizing" them. New spices and new flavors really helped fill a "hole" in my appetite.

You guys offer some great tips here. I think the best is having the right mind frame and keeping things ultra simple. I've been vegan now for almost 2.5 years. It's been super easy. I listen to videos, podcasts or audio books to keep things top of mind. When I tried in the past, I would tend to get caught up in recipes, buying a bunch of things that I'd use little of and just abandon the whole thing. Today I got a little hungry before dinner and had a small sweet potato- microwaved and I sprinked some WYW Everything but the Bagel on top. Now I'm set to wait for dinner. No big deal because I had the staples.

@@shiningjewel4034 thank you for that suggestion. I’ve also been thinking about creating a weekly menu and allowing them a meat option to be added. It just pains me to do so because of the prevalence of diabetes in my husband’s family. My husband has been type 2 since age 16 and has never been overweight a day in his life. His c peptide shows it can be controlled by diet (instead of the 3 orals and insulin he’s on). I’m afraid he’ll slide in the process and that the kids continuing their way of eating will set them up to be diabetic sooner than later. Also, the 15yo looks up to people like “the Rock” (who touts eating a dozen eggs and 7 steaks a day) and has subscribed to the thought process of needing to eat meat with every meal (he’s always been on the skinny side and it’s sore subject for him) and that he is not “full” unless there’s meat. I’ve tried to get him to watch “Game Changers” and he won’t because he is firm on the thinking that he must have meat. I guess all of this to say- I really have my work cut out for me 😳 I truly appreciate your suggestions!!

@@emilyblake2268 You can only change you. They may never be on board, but you might be surprised too. My only rule is you must try one bite. I don't care if they spit it out. They'll taste it again in a month of two and might find they like it eventually.... also, the simple foods are soooo good! Most of us like potatoes, rice, and beans. If they can fill up mostly on the good stuff using the meat is like a condiment, it's almost a win. Meatless Monday would be a good way to get them more interested in your way of eating. They will discover foods they love on Mondays and won't be so resistant when they appear on the table at other times. I have confidence you'll convert them. The changes they see happening to you will make them curious and that is a great place to start for miracles.

Things I learned that I wish I knew before going plant-based 1) If you are trying to cut out meat or dairy products, try to find something that's the equivalent in the plant-based world. 2) You need to learn about where to get B12 on a plant-based diet - probably preferably via supplementation, but also via fortified foods (eg nutritional yeast, fortified soy milk etc). Also look into where to get iron if you are a woman, or calcium if you don't eat a lot of greens. For example, molasses has a lot of calcium. Some people may also struggle with zinc, selenium or choline. You can usually find it in food, but if you have trouble eating the relevant foods, talk to your doctor or dietician about supplements, especially if you are getting symptoms. 3) If eating in the healthiest way - focusing on whole plant-based foods - you will likely be consuming more fibre. Ease into it over several weeks, and drink more water to help your body deal with the extra fibre. This will reduce bloating. 4) Don't become fearful of foods like oil, sugar, or fat. The fear about these foods is overblown. It's wise to limit them somewhat, but there's no need to try to cut out every gram or tablespoon. In the end, it appears that calories are the biggest control knob. If you try to limit ultra-processed foods, and you can prepare and control how food is made at home, you'll be investing in your long term health. Focus mostly on the produce aisle and eat mostly whole foods, but if you need convenience, don't beat yourself up over occasionally having processed vegan foods. It's all about balance. If you're stressing about being perfect and it's causing mental anguish and affecting your mental health - stop - that does you no good. Let yourself have that vegan or vegetarian pizza or ice cream. It's better that you find something you can sustain for a long time, that won't make you hate yourself than being perfect for a very short period of time and then giving up. 5) Track the foods you eat with an app like cronometer to see what nutrients your diet may be missing. Do it for at least two weeks. You will learn a lot from that. However, your diet is more than the calories you eat or the macros that you are getting. Calories and macros can be goals, but alone they do not say much about healthfulness. The context of lifestyle and exercise goals and balance of food groups likely matter more for long term health. You can count carbs but learn about healthy and less healthy types of carbs. The same applies to proteins and fats. There are better and worse choices - but you don't need to be perfect all the time - just most of the time.
Vegan Health - CALORIE DENSITY & METABOLISM - Stop counting calories!
