My children were all brought up to be self sufficient and taught basic skills and general upkeep of a car or truck and definitely a bike was very important. Today's young folks can turn on a computer and maneuver through it but can't even change a car or bike tire, mend clothing, maintain a small garden lots of lost skills to mention.

I have been saving my dryer lint, because I heard it is one of the BEST firestarters. I have MANY large detergent borpttles in my basement filled with water that is soapy. Not only is it good for general cleaning, but when I was a bit low on detergent, I poured some of the soapy water in the washing machine and got enough suds to do my load of laundry. I made a Faraday cage out of a small steel trash can, and I have two grills, and a chafing dish with inside safe stereo, lots of flashlights, and plastic spoons, etc., and canned goods, rice, beans, pasta, coffee, tea, vinegar, and spices, which I use for cooking, AND medicinal uses, like Oregano oil, and when I wi shed I could find wild lettuce for a natural pain killer, God put some in my flower bed. I couldn't believe that happened at first, but he often answers my prayers. I let the plants go to seed, and saved it.nJust a good start.

An older friend pointed out of the huge psychological lift I am missing. Not just the heat. Smell of the hickory smoke is nice. Or each wood too. I expect a cold Winter. I can heat my 350 sq foot room with propane. But looks like I need to cut wood, but a bit disabled now.

Please get yourself electric blankets, 120 volt AC, and a 12 volt blanket or throw. Inexpensive. If not from online, Amazon etc, check truck stops, they have lots of 12 volt DC appliances. My dad also instilled a knowledge about driving and our vehicles when we were growing up and learning to drive. We all started on a stick shift and our first vehicles were also sticks. I still love to drive a stick shift to this day. Though I have to admit we do currently drive an automatic. I miss the days of my husband being able to work on a car. With all the new technology he cannot repair them anymore. Even replacing a battery in our Dodge Journey was a costly nightmare. I will never own another one for sure. Had to take it to a battery store to be replaced. Hubby looked online and it was so costly to buy all the parts needed to replace it. You can't get to it from the hood, you have to remove the front tire and half the front of the car to get to it. It would have cost hundreds of $$$ to get the tools. We don't have a garage to store anything either. The dealership was our only other answer and they couldn't touch it for 2 weeks!!! At that time we had my mom living with us, we couldn't afford to be without a car that long. It was crazy. Walmart and Sam's Club wouldn't touch it either. Sam's told us about the battery store. They did it in less than 2 hours and it was a little over $225. We miss his '73 Ford Truck...lol
@Bloodhoundjed1

My husband and I both loved stick shifts, unfortunately our knees don't, so we now drive automatics. And he used to work on a lot of our older vehicles as well. It is harder to work on some of the newer ones. He was in the process of trying to rebuild his 73 Ford pu, but things got detoured. I really wished it was finished, to use for a backup vehicle or just to cruise around in.

@@Bloodhoundjed1 Ironic that we both had '73 Fords :) Ours was a short bed, light yellow, in Calif. had to sell to junk yard in 95ish. But wish we had been able to have it repaired back then. It was an automatic, but didn't have bells and whistles. No power anything.

👍 I’ve got 2 spare trailer tires on rims-wheels mounted higher up on the inside wall of trailer. I ordered it installed and mounted that way from the trailer manufacturer. However, I need to install a floor Jack and proper tools though. Thanks for the reminder. 😮 I do have 5 years of split and stacked farewood inside a building constructed with treated lumber though. And Praise Jesus that I know a guy; I have 75 extra, brand new chainsaw chains. I started buying them about 10 years ago because I knew the prices would double. 85 lbs of honey, stored in glass jars… Recently got Eppi Pen. Plan on purchasing a second one. Folks don’t realize that it takes years of research and planning. Once Obummer won a second term, wifeee and I sought the Lord, and actually have had fun in prepping. One of the biggest reasons was that either way, the products that we began purchasing, were ones that we would eventually need regardless, and were purchased with 2013 ⬆️ dollars…. Just one example is the 30 lb roll of heavy duty tin foil from the restaurant supply house. The 2 rolls that we bought back in 2005, have more than doubled in price. Still have 1 1/2 rolls left. Get with it people ! You’ll thank me later ……

I have probably changed somewhere between eight and 10 tires in my day. However, I’m 75 years old these days and my strength is kind of went to the crapper. Technically, yes, I could carry a cheater bar. I know how to use one of those. But I don’t have the strength that I used to have so I have Road service. When I used to do and my age not so good to change these days. But I will say, even though I wasn’t changing my tire, which was a three-quarter Dodge diesel. I made sure that I had a heavier jack thing with the truck. Because at one time I was carrying a very heavy camper and I knew that the jack that came with the truck was not lifted. And of course, I had a road service once and he was using every single thing and finally at the very end he took out a jack exactly what I purchased to be a lift that heavy Because of the camper and it’s still in the truck I don’t drive it a lot 2002 with 72,000 miles. Yes I need to drive it more but sometimes because of it size you can’t get into some parking spaces. But I do love the truck it’s garage so as well taken care of I don’t care if it has 3000 miles on it or 2000 miles for the year it gets serviced once a year. Tires are taken care of because I live in a hot area and they don’t last long. Try to get 2 miles it usually into town or something so that I will have at least close to 20 miles to heat up the oil drive around the block. I learned that from fly airplane, they said you need an hour sometimes I only had 30 minutes, but I never started that plane unless I knew it was gonna have at least 30 minutes on that engine oil because of condensation that builds up you wanna make sure it’s all burned off. so even though I have tools with me. My husband are taking that toolbox with you. You don’t know how to do that. Nope I don’t but I can find someone that can if they have the tool. No longer with me since 2006, but I still had the same mindset. Including his welders because that was my dowry. No I didn’t remarry I decided I didn’t need to. It was my second marriage and both of no longer living but I did have a good 34 years with my last husband praise the Lord. And we did have a portable toilet business we started with four 1300.and yes, I had a commercial drivers license and yes, I drove heavy equipment 18 wheelers and our equipment. 75. I don’t need to do all that now.

@@Bloodhoundjed1 I still enjoy driving the truck at 75. And it is a six speed. 2002 the Cummins had the most torque of any engine at that time. And I wish my husband was still around also but you have a newer truck because you have 17 inch tires I have 16 inch, they’re very large and very heavy and no, I can’t change one. I do know how to do it technically with a shovel because I was taught this years ago when we had her business. Unless I had a cheater bar and I’m not even sure my age. But I always make sure I have the right equipment so somebody could change it for me.

Thanks for this post! I purchased a rim and tire for my van since it does not come with one. BUT, I wasn't thinking! I have no jack. If I had not listened to your post, I may have been stuck when in need. I just wasn't thinking.

Thank you! I have a small handheld chainsaw that broke a few weeks ago. I keep thinking I need to learn to fix it, and, I want to order another one to just cut up small stuff. Not able to handle a bigger one, so this has to do . I have quite a few extra things for my car, since I travel for work, so I realize I need to check and recheck!

I wouldn't have thought of an Epipen if no one has allergies... great idea!

My sufggestion as a holistic NP: also have Benadryl, Claritin or Zyrtec to try prior to using epipen and only use if there is throat swelling and difficult breathing. Also homeopathic kit with reference guide can also be used prior to epipen. Medrol dose pack is also a “must have” to avoid trips to the doctor!
