Awesome video as always! I guess tips 2 through 5 apply even to senior or veteran game-animators. Being just a good or even excellent animator these days can be challenging if you want to break into the game industry.

Wise words Alex, and yerp you have to go further these days to get the exposure needed to secure jobs.

I am an animation student and I want to get into the game animation industry. I unfortunately didn’t have the foresight to choose a school for game animation so it’s hard for me to get experience in games through my curriculum. Should I consider a more specialized grad school or an online school to further build my skills? Or would I do well to save my money and learn the tools and pipelines on the side while continuing to hone my animation skills?

Hey Oscar. So I would say that if you find a good online school with a solid game program to go for it. However there's plenty of tutorials and knowledge out there and if you're serious about pursuing a career as a game dev you can learn a lot from KZbin, via Mentorships and Courses. So maybe start there and see how much mileage you get. In terms of usefullness....KZbin being free is always great, but the knowledge is scattered. Course are better and more focused but it really depends on the tutor. The best source of knowledge is getting an experienced Mentor and if possible one on one classes so you can ask questions and get direct answers to your problems.

Hi Harvey, I want to thank you for your amazing KZbin channel and the valuable information you share. I'm a budding animator particularly interested in specializing in walk cycle animation. I'm wondering if focusing solely on this area would be a good career path. Could you share your thoughts on the following: . Is there a consistent demand for animators specializing in walk cycles? . What career paths are available for walk cycle specialists? Can this skill lead to other animation roles? . Would focusing solely on walk cycles limit my ability to grow as an animator? . What advice would you give to someone starting out in walk cycle animation? Thanks a lot!

Hey Hive, thanks for the great comment Good question, so at least in game dev there isn't a specific need for a walk cycle specific animators as most people can do them, also most game use mocap for that type of stuff. However I would say that becoming really good at hand key walk cycles is super beneficial as most animators never truly grasp it properly before finding their first job so in any one study there's always the animator that is really good at walk cycles you so you end doing most of them. ;) But I would say that if you'd like to get into gameplay animation to focus on other areas of animation as well. I hope that helps.

@@harveynewman Hi Harvey, Thanks again for your insightful response. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. As a beginner animator, your advice about focusing on other areas of animation in addition to walk cycles is really helpful. Could you please share your thoughts on the essential skills and knowledge a game-play animator should have to increase their chances of landing a job?
