I can chill about not owning a particular plant I really want. I don't think it's often possible to collect every one in a set. Alternatives are fine. Cebu Blue not in Australia? Get a regular green epipremnum pinnatum. Aglaonema tri-colour too pricey? Get a Homalomena Wallsii. Ctenanthe Luberssiana too big for your space? Plenty of other yellow/green plants. Certain dieffenbachias look like aglaonema superwhite. . As long as you are loving the look of the leaves, all is right with the world. I went to the kitchen for some water and had to pause the vid even though I would've been able to hear it. That's because I love watching your expressions as you interact with your plants. Some gorgeous big philo fellows you have there.

The nectar attracts ants that protect the plant, mostly the new leaves. I have a Philo Burle Marx that does the same and the ants really enjoy
@kjj50024 жыл бұрын
Hugo Cassimiro OMG THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR COMMENTING THIS!!! I’ve noticed my new leaves ALWAYS have little ants on them and I never knew why
@myphotosyntheticfriends34344 жыл бұрын
Yes! Some of my philodendrons do this too. I just posted a video of the ants feeding on my plant’s extrafloral nectaries yesterday. Mine are in a greenhouse so I don’t mind them attracting ants.
@bkrbkrl4 жыл бұрын
Ants are not harmless. There is also a symbiotic relationship with ants and mealy bugs/aphids! Ants should not be "allowed" because they bring in and spread mealy bugs/aphids to ALL your plants. This side relationship can be very hard to fix once they get established.
@myphotosyntheticfriends34344 жыл бұрын
Sure, keep an eye out for scale etc. if you see ants. I’ve had ants farming scale elsewhere and stopped it but I’ve never seen them do so on a plant that has extrafloral nectaries. Not saying it’s impossible, but I wouldn’t assume that any ant activity will result in them spreading scale or mealybugs to every plant you have. If you keep an eye on your plants you should be able to stop an infestation before it’s established anyway. Certain plants are prone to certain species of scale and mealybug, so if someone notices a plant is prone to pests they should probably keep ants away from it if possible. But I’d personally rather deal with ants and scale than a spider mite outbreak because I sprayed insecticide for ants and accidentally killed off all the predators that prevent pests too. (Especially in a country where effective systemic miticides aren’t available to non-commercial growers). What I’m actually getting at is: while it’s useful to share your experience so people can take on what’s relevant to them, too often people talk about plant care in absolutes when there are too many variables to generalise like that. People try things and learn what works and doesn’t in their own conditions to become better growers. So yeah, ‘watch out for ants farming scale’ is good advice. But the idea that ants should never be allowed under any circumstances is too absolute to apply to everyone in Nick’s broad audience, imho.
@bkrbkrl4 жыл бұрын
@@myphotosyntheticfriends3434 I think you are generalizing with what you said. I have had a "let them go" attitude with ants before, and paid dearly for that. Those ants spread the pests to every plant I owned, so yes, some plants are more prone to certain pests, but ants plant those pests on everything (except the nectar plants they protect) and they will take hold. Everyone has the right to say their opinions and tell their experiences to help others. What others do with it is up to them. No one should keep quiet because someone in an "audience" might actually save themselves a lot of heartache by following their advice. I didn't mention scale in what I said. I have never had scale, so I can't comment on it. Nick is talking house plants, so why would you bring up eliminating predators? I had to spray coleus this year for mealies outdoors, which I have never had to do in the past 20 years, so you are saying it would have been better to let them die waiting on the predators to show up and had all my work with them ruined? How do predators help if the ants are protecting the pest bugs? They can't get at them. Also remember there ARE very nice organics that do work in an outdoor setting. Before anyone mentions it: I am aware of predator bugs for sale. They are stupid expensive, and the idea of letting predatory mites, etc. into a home, to me, is ridiculous. You cannot use any products on your plants once released, because it will kill them as well. Also those with any kindness in them would realize that the predator bugs will eventually eliminate your pests, but then they get to starve to death. Nice payback. (If they all die before pest eggs hatch, you have your problem all over again.) I have had ants outdoors milking Peony nectar, but that didn't stop them from expanding their survival horizons to spreading the pest bugs they also "milk." They WILL, just not onto the nectar plant. Spider mites are also easy to eliminate as long as you catch it early and be consistent in treatment. Organics work on them too. I have never had them be the "nightmare" they are portrayed to be by others, but I never let them get out of control, either. (By the time you see webbing, they ARE an infestation/ARE out of control.) I stand by my advice. If others want to risk their plants, go ahead and allow ants around them. My EXPERIENCE is that you should NOT consider them harmless, whether indoors, outdoors near your house, or in a greenhouse setting.

If you have them a long time, they can get massive, a real statement. As they have a thicker stem, they can grow upwards on their own for a while, but will still need a stake at some point. Sort of like a pink princess' growth, if you are familiar with it

Both have had a ton of growth. Unpopular opinion here: I think the birkin is super lackluster and I don't understand the hype at all. It just looks like canna lily leaves to me that are a dime a dozen and even cannas have more interesting colors/patterns than birkins and cost a fraction of the cost.
