You opened a can of worms. I've tried so many types of art; crochet, photography, rubber stamping, card making, scrapbooking, watercolor, stenciling, mixed media, junk journals, gelli printing, sewing, quilling, die cutting and I'm sure I missed a few. When I was in Jr high I wanted to become a grade school art teacher. My favorite teacher was my k-8th art teacher. We were friends all thru my adulthood, too until she passed away. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a decent grade on anything from my high school art teacher, so I became a hairdresser instead (another form of art). I still dabble in most of the aforementioned. Watercolor is the area I always want to improve more. Thanks for your fun spirit and lessons.

I was told by an art teacher in the seventh grade that art is 95% Hardwork and 5% talent but some kids don’t have the 5% talent… she meant me ….so I gave up and never tried art again. ..until now .I’m 70 years old and I’m loving learning to watercolor with you! I am a retired high school teacher and senior photographer (loved), I tried pottery…(no go), sewing (so-so), and I’ve been a passionate gardener for 5 decades. But, today its all about learning to watercolor😍Thank you for all you teach!!
@catzkeet48602 жыл бұрын
The thing is, I doubt she was right about you not having “talent” cos you’re human……all humans can make art…but nonetheless, even WERE she correct…..you can learn to make up for “talent”. The trick is……keep at it. Paint, draw, doodle, scribble whatever….nike that sucker!!! (Just do it) lol

I picked up watercolor again in January 2022, after 40 years. I had been an avid gardener too. i had a beautiful yard that took me 20 to create. that was my substitute art form. I had back surgery in 2016 and there went that creative outlet. of course no one took care of the outside and what took me 20 years to accomplish, Mother Nature reclaimed in 3. after grief and depression, I needed to do something just for me. so I started watercoloring again.. I've been a watercoloring fool since January! lol. enjoying every nanosecond of it!!!!!! I'm 72.

I was told the same thing and it impacted me similarly. Interestingly, I had seen a book about how to do art journaling right before my mom died and I was so overwhelmed with emotion I decided to do it. I did some amazing things totally by accident. That started me on a journey with art and mixed media. I was absolutely hooked on art. Coloring, Zen Art Tangles, Acrylic, Mixed Media, and I dabbled in Watercolors. I was doing a lot of art that other people really liked but the more KZbin videos I watched on "how to" do mixed media the worse my art was. It seemed like I did better before I knew "how" you were "supposed" to do it. Then I found Mark Kistler and he explains, in detail, in his "You Can Draw in 30 Days" that everyone can be an artist because it is about how YOU see things (obvious paraphrasing). The point is I stopped listening to the teacher who told me I should try sports instead of art. I stopped listening to the inner critic and I stopped mad watching "how to" videos and looked for MY people. I AM AN ARTIST! I've dabbled in acrylics, collage, and I've made a ton of altered book style "junk" journals that I've sold and done ok with. Then I tried watercolors again and my first few paintings were really good. Then I made the same mistake and mass watched "how to" videos and my art suffered. Now I'm very thoughtful about who I watch. For me, I have a different brain so I look for people who speak to my crazy imagination and quirky personality. I'm improving again and think watercolors will be my forever love. With that said, I am really good at making altered books and art journals so I'll continue to do that as time permits also but honestly as a homeschooling grandma of three young kids time is precious and watercolors allow me to relax and decompress without taking time away from my family. I'm in love!!! I love this channel. She's my quirky people! Absolutely in love! Emma is also my jam!

I'm a guitarist who has always wanted to be a painter. I was never a visual artist, at all.... well.. one time I got some sculpey and made a bunch of hands, gripping spheres. They were awesome, and delicious. My dog ate them. I turned into a guitar player who paints abstracts and describes emotional states, ideas and portraiture in sound. Then! I had a brain injury. And I was a more engaged and more deeply synesthetic musician whose audio "paintings" became more engaging and interesting. Experimental music that not only doesn't alienate, but seems to invite people who listen to "normal" music. Then! I had covid. Then I was suddenly a visual artist. I could just draw. Now I'm painting. I'm waaaaay better than I should be, and also, pretty bad. Time seems to affect my skill level unevenly. I get better and worse as I jump from style to style with no effort and sometimes, no seeming agency. So... that's my story. Now I will learn as much as possible, then forget it as I integrate it into my broken brain. Thanks. You are awesome. I like the way you think.

Like you I've dipped my creative hand into just about every art/craft medium that exists. I'm a big DIYer and have refurbished multiple pieces of furniture for my home. I sew, crochet, make jewelry out of different mediums, and am an avid paper crafter. I've dabbled in drawing and think it's something I would like to work on developing my skills in. I took ceramics in highschool and would have pursued it more after graduating but couldn't afford a kiln, wheel, or all the other stuff required and didn't have a place to put it anyway. I still dabble in a lot of things but my go to's are beading, paper crafting, crochet, and I hope watercolor. I feel very drawn to it after taking an "exploring watercolor class last summer. It was a "no rules" class where we learned some general techniques and were encouraged to just let our brushes move across the paper but to follow a couple of guidelines. My favorite session was the one where we made random shapes/splotches and when they dried we had to draw lines with a pen to create a discernable image. I've discovered that I tend to overthink (I want to maintain too much control) and I usually use too much water. I know though that I'll find my balance and create some great to me watercolor works of art.

I realized that I loved detail, detail, detail and therefore drawing was and still is my favorite. Graphite and pen and ink (black, no color) is so great because I can just go and go. Any black and white is fun for me...scratchboard, ink wash, Sumi-e and white colored pencil on black paper. No waiting for the paint to dry. I have wanted to watercolor for a long time. Charlotte, a friend in her 90's, encouraged me to keep trying. After all I was ONLY 69 (at the time) and she said I had "plenty of time!" I realized the detail got in the way. Most W/C classes I took were all taught in a certain way. I did NOT want to paint "normally." I said I wanted to do "watery" water colors. I found the phrase, LOOSE, ABSTRACT! I stumbled onto KZbin during the pandemic and there it was, MY kind of painting! My friend died at age 102. I looked to the heavens and said, "Charlotte, I finally did it!" I want to just paint, most of the time, not even have a sketch. I just want to keep going until I am done. I love your style. I do some things differently as I love to mix my own colors. For the most part, I never care about the NAMES of colors. I have 2 reds and quite a few blues and greens. My paints are just, what I call, rainbow colors! I love "messy" painting, color bleeding and splattering! And, of course, I love to mix W/C with ink! I am now 74 and still draw minute detail but my swirly W/C is so liberating! My vision is not quite so good, so "sloppy" water colors suit me fine.

It's fun to think about all of the mediums I've been using since I've also been making art for my entire life. Drawing: pencils, charcoal, oil and chalk pastels, crayons, colored pencils, pen and ink, markers, gel pens gelattos. Painting: Watercolors, oils and acrylics but especially and always watercolors. Pottery, batik, fiber arts, embroidery, Jewelry making, pysanky eggs, Basket making. Photography. Digital art. I've probably forgotten if you on this list. That was fun!

Definitely overworking. And maybe too much water. Or overthinking. 😎 my solution is paint more. Paint until I am comfortable enough to not obsess. And in the process, I still have fun and I'm still learning how I paint. I think I might be one of those that will just overwork, finally put a glaze over it and have one item be hyper realistic. But then again, you are truly responsible for getting me to lighten up. Love your videos.

Although I don't love painting with acrylic, I used to be a volunteer teacher teaching a "wine and sip" type class but for kids (8 - 17) at a non-profit co-op, obviously using acrylic (because it's cheap and easy to work with). I always started out my classes explaining that "I'm not a professional artist" and "I'm frankly not even very good" (this is true, some of my older students painted better than me) but I'm here because art is joyful and painting, in particular, is therapeutic. I told them I hoped they will not feel pressure to create a masterpiece or even a painting that looks exactly like mine or their neighbors but instead, I hope they can explore their creative side and have fun. And fun we had! Unfortunately, I moved and so I had to stop teaching the class, but I greatly miss it and hope to start doing it again.

Watercolor painting is my "dabble". lol I used to try all kinds of art, but I found I performed best in music and fiber arts, like crochet, knitting, sewing, etc. Lately, I have just felt this strong urge to create something, and while oil painting was my first thought, I decided to try watercolor first because of the cost of supplies. Watercolor could get very expensive, but my daughter has plenty of nice supplies on hand, while I'd be starting from scratch with oil. She also does acrylic painting, but I don't have the confidence just yet that I can get the blending down or the technique. So, I'm trying watercolor first, but who knows? I may decide I like it best. I am binging your videos. lol I want to learn all I can and every one of your videos is packed with knowledge. I am going to give them all a boop. 😆

Card making (where I shine and spend most of my crafting time), Zentangle (so much fun to do while watching the tube). Thing I will never do again, though it's beautiful, is alcohol art. I recently spent a day and a half with alcohol ink, plastic, and my air brush. It felt so fake, which sounds weird, but watercolor feels so organic in comparison, if that makes sense? I felt stifled.

It also give me a chance to try out different kind of opaque white: gel pen, gouache, poster color, color pencil, pastel, white ink, etc. I still try to leave out white paper space sometime just to challenge my skills, because it is quite difficult with hair and whiskers.

When you dab into all the other colors and have for example, red in your yellow, do you clean them somehow so next time they are pure?
@KristyRice2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I clean them, as needed but usually it doesn’t bother my painting process :)

Oh my goodness... where has THIS lesson (yes these are MY lessons!) been ALL my life??? I am ALL of these... and all of them A LOT! Too heavy handed? Check, too much/too little water? Check Check. OVERTHINKING? That canvas has stayed blank MANY o times friend. Many. I wish I had viewed this earlier. A short video with a huge punch. I will be coming back to this when I get one of those "wtf am I doing" moments. And wrt to art and my life (54), I've done almost everything at some point. I still do professional photography for bands (been slinging a camera since i was 8 years old!), professional web design, I make jewelry, I garden (does that count??), I make house boxes, do things with miniatures - too many to list. I wanted to go to art school but was talked into doing something that would "make a living", something to "fall back on". So yep, I gots me a masters in mathematics. Practical, right? I've always been into art in some form, it has been the one constant all my life. I never really got oil painting, too impatient. I've always always loved the watercolor medium, all throughout my life I always come back to it. I've never been trained, had lessons or taken classes. Well that's all changed in the past ~2 months. I'm now looking at my paintings and I actually like what I see. It makes me happy. I'm getting it. I'm actually learning the basics I NEVER knew and have been applying them successfully. I don't want to be the best or sell my art, nothing like that. I just want to look at my creation and be pleased with my attempt. My friends and family are a good measure too, they can see what I've learned and are impressed "YOU did that??". I just need to push it and start doing my own creations now. I have tons of ideas, I just need to take off the training wheels.

I've been addicted to polymer clay for 5 years, acrylic paints, crafts of all sorts. Leather and ceramics. Recently discovered HD foam and coplay costuming. Made my 5 year old gd a Wonder Woman costume with sword and shield for Christmas. And...she got a kids watercolor set, which I've since replaced because Grammy likee.

Hi Kristy! I am a true problem child when it comes to all of those headings. I make art the way "I" make it..., what can I say?! As long as I am happy with a project, it makes no difference how I get from A to B. If I reach "B" and I get butterflies in my belly and I have a smile on my face or my eyes twinkle? Then I have done my job as an artist. My ultimate problem is making a pallet. Currently, I use tubes. I just can't commit to1 pallet of 12, 36, or 48 colors because in truth I want them ALL... Help???!!! Do you have any tips for setting up pallets and which colors to place near each other??? Any advice would be welcome and greatly appreciated!!! 💚💙💛🎨🖌🎨💛💙💚

I went through that when I first became disabled. I was determined to keep busy. When I had to move, I donated $1000s of dollars worth of fabrics, books and other various crafts I had invested heavily in. I kept my embroidery floss because I was convinced I would never give it up. Kept my art supplies. I still have not gone back to my embroidery but I still love art and keep buying more.

My mother was always disappointed in me because she thought I quit everything I started. She didn’t understand that one day I would play piano, then, embroidery, then dance, then pottery, and then sewing which I am really good at doing including tailored suits, and it all depended on “how I was feeling.” It still does. The elders didn’t understand ADHD back then. My teachers just thought I was mean. Did I mention that I wrote plays and had my friends wear costumes and perform for the class? Lol… They made me stop when I did a musical using The Beatles music. I got in a lot of trouble for that one. Love and peace wasn’t their groove! 😂

@KristyRice2 жыл бұрын
I could make a whole video about those!!! I’ll admit my preference is to avoid black because I like a more richly colorful dark but white is my fave to mix with watercolor. We don’t always have to save those whites!!
