I'm estimating it's half the costs in the Philippines. But the value of a traditional loving young beautiful wife is priceless.

My favorite aspect of the Philippines is that my generosity goes a.long way there. In the US, tipping 20% at restaurants is an expectation, whereas a 20% tip in the PI could at times equal the salary of the workers. Yes, it's cheaper to be generous - and thus easier to be more attractive.

Please don’t bring that plague tipping culture to Philiphines with you.

Gio, everything you mentioned also here in Tokyo. My rent is only $500/month. Nice apartment. No need for a car since the trains are excellent. I can go from one end of Tokyo to the other for a few dollars. No automobile, taxes, tags, insurance, maintenance, depreciation, etc. Grocery shopping is overall reasonable. Restaurants -- Went out for lunch today, around 700 yen or $5. Healthcare is ridiculously cheap. Just today had a tooth filled for literally under $20. Few years ago had an MRI. Cost was $80 and included the DVD. Yes, personally I love my “socialized” medicine. Also, as you said, I “pay myself first” every month and can save a lot of money. No idea about a maid, never had one. Don’t want one.

Thrive, VS, survive. Yup, got that in my head a few years ago when I left the US. Thriving was my goal, I wanted the last of my years on the planet to be fun, so, off I went. Mexico was first, as it was the end of covid, and Thailand was still mostly closed. Mexico wasn't bad, but it was not as some KZbinrs portrayed it. Rent was more than expected, and even renting was a battle at times. Finally Thailand opened up, so I went. Talk about the difference between surviving, and thriving! OMG! I was actually able to "make," money with the lower cost of living and have fun as well. The only downsides to Thailand is driving on the wrong side of the road, and the language is a PITA to learn. I'm hoping to fix both those issues in the Philippines.

Brother, now 77 years young moved to the Philippines a few years ago. He and his new bride built a home. Countless times he has stressed how inexpensive labor is. For example, he had a plumber in to do some work in a rental he was in, worked a couple of hours and he only wanted a few dollars. He's had similar experiences of the same nature, so I thought Labor costs would definitely be somewhere in your top five. Contractors seem to work for very little. I know everything is not apples, peaches, and pumpkin pie in the Philippines, but it sure has a lot to offer for the expat who has a good retirement(s) in comparison to the West. Thanks Gio.

Good points Gio. I would agree with all those. I was wondering about the insurance though. I know you do it with the car registration. Is it your typical auto insurance? I don't think auto insurance is required in the PH, so it confused me when I was car shopping.

Very true Gio I once gave a tricycle rider 500 pesos to drive me 20 minutes to the supermarket where I live he said he would wait for me so I gave him the money he made sure I got back to my house after about 2 hours and I have someone who comes to my house to cut my hair but you know because of Filipino time he never shows up on time when he says so. I just go some place else for 60 pesos to get a hair cut and they do a much better job than in the west for much less and I spend around 3,000 pesos for groceries in 2 months at least my water bill is usually around 50 pesos and I spend a lot of money when I go to SM mall in Butuan because I don't go there very often maybe 1 or twice a month so yeah the malls there Robinsons and SM aren't very big compared to other malls in bigger cities but I still enjoy shopping there. Take care 👍

You can save money in the Philippines versus living in the west. However, you also need to find sources of income, which is hard to come by in the Philippines. You have to have that already set up before going there!

Do you know any older expats with medical needs that have a full time or live-in nurse or caregiver? Any idea what that would cost? (Just a ballpark number?) Not a bed or wheelchair bound patient, but someone who needs to be checked on daily who deals with chronic pain and often needs assistance to get moving in the morning, or needs help managing or administering medications. Plus housekeeping and cooking…stuff like that. Like a maid with medical training.

you mention a rental savings of up to 70% but the places are smaller. So how much savings would it be based on Rental prices per SQ. Foot. so for the same size place (say 1500 Sq foot ) what would the savings Be ?

Holy crap! $500 a month rent in the Philippines is way more than their average monthly income. That's how much a man and woman make total per month. 4 full time workers might not be able to pay your rent and live.

Gio, when you mention "in the west..." I guess you mean USA and UK, maybe Australia? Because I live in Europe and, outside France, Germany, Italy and a couple other "super 1st world" countries, you spend as little or less than in the Philippines. If I come over it's only for the women, otherwise I'd certainly stay in Europe and pay less! Plus, here you can actually get a good job even if you are not a digital nomad or something.

Not sure i will save any money on an apartment, here in Spain, Valencia, i paid my apartement (60 sqm with balcony) 50 000 euros + fees and my maintenance fees are 15 euros per month, how about the Philippines? Can we buy apartements under 50 000 euros and 15 euros per month maintenance fees?

I agree Gio. We ran our simulated budget for the PH and it included a maid, 3 massages a wk for myself and 3 for my wife and it still came in 1/3 the cost of our US budget and here in the US we dont have a maid and rarely get massages. Def a upgrade in lifestyle in the PH!

Services in Philippines are so great. Had our rental car scratched last year in Subic, it was a big scratch.. would have easily costed us 1k+++ here in the states, guy only charged us 40$ and even gave us a discount because he overcharged us. We asked him to keep it since he did such a great work with such extreme price.

Just got here and so far I’ve found Transportation and Booze to be incredibly cheap. A grab ride from the Manila airport was $5, an Uber from my place back home to the airport was $85. Tanduay Rum WTF $2 a bottle, this has to be best value item I’ve ever seen in my life. 80 minute massage with fun time is $20 here, back home quadruple that or more 😂.

This is like comparing a Volkswagen to a Cadillac Here on the West Coast of the US, the average Employed individual makes a living wage in the Philippines. Their average worker doesn’t make a living wage that’s why you have so many people living in substandard conditions. The Filipino ladies have unique qualities I am divorced and single and wouldn’t hesitate to marry a Filipino lady I would want her to move to the US and have the opportunity of dual citizenship and if she has children equality education When you take into consideration, women live longer than men, and I would be marrying a younger woman by living in the US she would be entitled to Social Security and other benefits and taking vacations in the Philippines 🤔

I’ve been in the Philippines 2+ years. 4 years ago I was paying over $1,800 a month for a 1 bed / 1 bath, 660 sqf apartment. Now I’m renting an 1,800 sqf, 3 bed / 2 bath house (a/c in every room), on a walled off lot (10K sqf) for 30K pesos a month! My Filipina has a family member who cleans the house for 500 pesos a day. Way cheaper than the 🇺🇸. 👍👍👍
