I’m only 13 years old, but I’ve already noticed how social media and phone changed my attention span and capability to actually get things done without background noices etc… I remember when I was younger that I read a lot of books, drew, and just did things without my phone while actually enjoying it more then scrolling.. I really hope I will improve this situation by somehow limiting myself in just pointlessly scrolling all day, because I just realized lately that it’s really ruining my productivity and maybe life, so I hope everyone who’s struggling with it will find the strength to overcome it

My theory about needing sound and stimulation to do tasks is that nature isn't silent. Nature is already stimulating but we're not connected to that as much when we're in houses for example. Plus the addition of being social creatures and liking to do things together instead of alone.

Found it kind of funny that you said you were proud of folks making it through the video without heading off elsewhere, and I'm sitting here like "bring on another couple hours, let's really dig into this on a molecular level". I love longform video essays and stuff of that nature. I'm definitely not immune from liking some shortform stuff but I always feel like trash after about 2 minutes of it. On the flipside, I'll gladly get a campfire going, get my camp chair, and tend to that for several hours with my phone left inside if I don't have housework or job work to do. It also intrigues me when my wife and I go out to a dinner date or whatever and we can have a discussion for a half hour, and we will look around occasionally and notice that we are likely the only couple actually talking without phones out.

My favorite video in a long time. Fantastic advice. Thank you so much for this. It's the wake up call I need. I have learned some of these skills permanently, like going easy on myself (that used to be a HUGE struggle), but awareness is ALWAYS the key, and it's always what slips away from me as I slip into my bad habits. Who knows how long I'll be off the brainrot wagon this time, but I wouldn't have been off it at all this time if it wasn't for you. I appreciate you trying to help us. A lot of what you said resonated with me greatly. ESPECIALLY the pulling out my phone when I have to do something I don't really want to do. I'm a huge offender of always having a podcast on while doing the dishes, bringing my phone to the bathroom, I even fall asleep listening to let's plays. It's a PROBLEM, and I need to admit it to myself. Thank you for helping me do that. One question on 8:10 though: I like learning piano, video editing, having deep conversations, playing volleyball, but... nobody watches my videos or listens to me play piano, etc.. My job, while I don't hate it, is very boring and doesn't bring anyone joy (I manage a legal contracts database). I don't feel like I'm "giving to the world". I'm not too upset about this, I don't need to be famous or anything, but I don't know if I have found that "giving to the world" activity yet. I'm wondering how I can find that. I've been searching for a while. Just wondering if you (or anyone else in the comments) has any thoughts on my predicament that they'd like to share.

Man! This might be your new best video! IMO before it was your video on “OVERTHINKING STOPS NOW” but this one may be even better or at least at the same level. Your Overthinking video and this video on brain rot are top 5 YT videos that I genuinely believe every person in the world must watch or at least be taught/ shown in late highschool/ early college. The part about the prefrontal cortex I found to be very interesting as I found that visualizing also helps strengthen that. Have a phobia for spiderwebs but when I visualize cannons pointed at it defusing it’s like I’m telling my brain that what it’s looking at is not something that it needs to get stressed over. Cool to know that having engaging conversations which strengthens the prefrontal cortex would ALSO help with phobias I would have never thought!

I have made it to the end of the video. A little over a month ago I quit nicotine (was an addict for six years). Over the last two weeks I've went from drinking multiple cups of coffee and energy drinks every day to drinking only a cup of earl grey tea in the morning. On paper, I was sure by this point I'd feel way better and be this perfect person with no flaws, but obviously that was a ridiculous expectation and just quitting the things that you cope with is not enough to actualize yourself and your time. It's harder than I thought and I'm still so unsure of what I need to do so that everyday of my life doesn't feel like a waste. As I'm typing this out I'm realizing my attention span is so bad I am already forgetting the things you talked about in this video... fuck. I didn't realize until recently how much I've indulged in the evil pleasures of life and the consequences of those actions but when you wake up to it. It's a bit overwhelming.

i think a reason why i can't get through this is how everyone sees brainrot or scrolling as a sign of being lazy and miserable. as a teenage girl with a weak self esteem who gets easily hurt by other's opinions, it's really hard for me to take action when i'm constantly looked down on for struggling, even if i want to be better i've recently (a year) been hating myself for absolutely no reason at all, and i got used to it. so being hard on myself is something i have to do in order to not feel uncomfortable in general. it's extremely hard to explain all of this to my therapist, i'm trying to make it simple here

work at a school where I’m around gen alpha (and the younger gen Zers) a lot and know them well. Covid cooked them pretty good. The youth suffered the most long term side effects for sure. A few of them have hobbies (ex: playing music) outside of their phones, and those few are very self aware of their issues and some do attempt to rectify it in some ways. Gives me hope for the future.. However, some are truly just… the human embodiment of brain rot and it’s very sad. Can’t help but blame the parents though.

When I realized I wasn't touching the scrollbar to see how much time the video had left and removed the chapters display, I knew this was a good video. Even had a restroom break in the middle of it and consciously told myself not to pull out my phone. But to admit my escapism, at my job there's a 90% downtime throughout the day and I'm sitting at a desk with dual monitors. The amount of times I've been crushed by brainrot through the days/months and even years is embarrasing. Recently I've noticed that I'd like to get into CS but I don't know too much about computers so as I'm reading and consuming Michael Meyers' learning content, I mentally fry out at an alarming speed because there's resistence to learning something new that I don't know too much about. There were even times where I wanted to hover my mouse over the bell icon just to see what new videos were up and I had to physically restrain myself from touching the mouse beccause I was very conscious of what my brain was trying to do. Same with discord notifs, so with that I'd like to say I enjoyed your video and I'll do my best to apply the things and methods I've learned in this video to my daily routine.
