Lots of people recommend not taking everything out and making a mess when decluttering, and I agree to a point. However I did it for my clothes and it was extremely helpful. I took everything out and sorted it on the bed, then tried it on. The sheer amount of clothes that I thought I liked but either didn't like it on or it didn't fit was crazy. I would have kept so much more had I not done that. Also it helped me to see the similar clothes when I was confronted with it. Sweatshirts were taking up such a big chunk of my closet. I think I had 13 and wore maybe 3. It was also helpful to get everything out so I could rearrange it in a way that made sense. When I started putting things back, I liked how open it felt, so I was very mindful of keeping it that way. Also putting everything back on hangers was a pain point, so I ended up donating things I was on the fence about because I was tired and didn't want to go through the effort for something I didn't love. LOL. Anyway, I wanted to mention this because I feel it's one of the best ideas of The KonMari Method. Especially for people like me who aren't good at looking at an overwhelming area and picking out things one at a time.

Thank you so much for sharing - definitely do what works for you! I did pull everything out of my closet when I was decluttering my clothes and it did work really well, but now that I’ve gotten it down to a manageable amount I’m hoping not to have to do that again 😊

Thank you! This is just what I needed! Key Points: Don’t delay yourself thinking you need a big chunk of time to declutter your overwhelming room all at once. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Fifteen-minute decluttering “bites” are fine. First, declutter the biggest thing in the room. The visible space will be encouraging. Next prepare to sort: Get big black trash bags for trash and for donations and 2 boxes: - a box or container for treasures - a box for papers to sort later so you don’t get bogged down. Start sorting. Anywhere is fine. Ask yourself: Will anyone want this after I’m gone? This question will give you a big-picture perspective. (See Swedish Death Cleaning video.) Keep the mess minimal. Some people recommend taking everything out of the room and only putting back the things you want to keep. But then you have two big messes and have to handle things twice! And if you don’t have time to finish, it can be even more discouraging, increasing your overwhelm and dread for coming back to finish the project! Instead, keep yourself motivated by celebrating small wins, putting on music or a podcast, stopping when you’re tired and coming back to it when you have a few minutes for another “bite.”

What works for me is a slight combination. For a closet, drawers etc I'll empty 1/3 of the closet onto my bed and go through and place "try on" in a chair. When im ready for bed that night i try them on and decide, usually around 4 to 6 pieces. Then i tie a piece of bright colored yarn (ribbon, scarf, twist tye) around the closet rod where i left off. Same with drawers and/or shelves etc. My elephant definitely needs to be divided into small pieces but if i leave those pieces out in front of me instead of behind closed doors, drawer etc, I will procrastinate. You have certainly helped me think out of the box not only for decluttering but motivation..thanks.

Donatable donate box is crucial, as you mentioned you only deal with things once. Also black trash bag, I do it for myself so I'm not overthinking while declutering. Very good point about doing it in smaller chunks, I get demotivated quickly, so it works for me to do smaller taska than one big project. This way I don't do bigger mess. I really recommend no mess decluter method form Dana K.White. Thank you for inspiration.

I wish my parents had known about the Swedish death cleaning;; They both passed last year and now I'm here on YT trying to find a video that helps me declutter and organize all the mess they left. I adored my parents, but both liked keeping things "just in case" and that's making it very difficult for me to sort through their stuff. Your video was very helpful btw. Thank you!

Love the close your eyes and point method 😂 Hey you gotta start somewhere! Bite by bite is a great approach. Also, I don't want to leave my mess for my daughter to deal with when I'm gone. I'm not perfect, but am doing the best I can a little at a time.

I think I have used all the declutter styles…. I did take everything out of my closet…. Discarded the not pile…. And tried on everything… yes I slept in the guest room for a month lol 😆 not a fan but I am pleased with the results… I am currently using the Swedish death… love ❤️ that…. I have most of my home completed and I only have the things I love… forget the rest….it is only taking up my valuable space and energy….. sentimental that will be last… it is all confined to one location now… that’s a tough one… I think I will just keep watching videos for now hahaha 😂 thanks for sharing

I've just Swedish death cleaned paperwork from my wardrobe, 2 bedside drawers and my upper kitchen cabinets. Tomorrow l'm going to do my desk drawers. Papers are my sore point. If l died tomorrow, l figure it would just take my relatives a day to go through items. My home isn't messy and my belongings are neatly stored away. I still use the items as when needed. I'm OK with that time frame. I've also attached a keepsakes letter for my trustees to distribute specific items to specific people. Each "keepsake' item is easily located and accessible. In the meantime, l'm still going to enjoy seeing / using the 'keepsakes'.

Excellent advice! Starting is the hardest part so you have to make it as easy as possible. I even think a great first step is just to go into the cluttered space and just survey the area. Take a good look around with no pressure on yourself to do any work. Chances are, you'll want to do a little something while you're in there, even if it's just removing some trash. Even if you don't dig in, seeds will be planted, as Melinda Plain and Simple says. Even after you've left the room, you'll consciously and subconsciously be thinking about your next plan of attack and gain some motivation to really get started. It's also often suggested to visualize how you want the space to look and feel after you've finished decluttering and setting it up the way you want with a clearly defined purpose.

I find it overwhelming too. Good tip doing it in 15 min increments. And also great tip of thinking about 'when I'm gone' way of thinking. I'm far too sentimental that's my problem. Thanks anyway for great suggestions.

I'm having to deal with a family members items after their death. How I wish they had done Swedish Death cleaning!! I have spent hours sorting, photographing their things, seeing if family members want it, etc. It's very motivating for me. I don't want my loved ones to have to do this!

Absolutely! I'm 60 yrs old and I started a year ago decluttering. When I leave this world I won't be leaving so much for my children to deal with. It's the kindest thing I can think of to do for them. And in this process I have also reaped the benefits of having less items to manage.

If I feel like I'm shutting down from feeling overwhelmed, I will sometimes ask my husband what his opinion on the space is. He's good at pulling me back to reality and starting small and, before you know it, quite a lot of progress has been made.

My basement was overwhelming. I had clothes that no longer fit, home, decor, teaching supplies from my former career and lots of photos. I thankfully ended up, finally tackling it by working through different categories. First, I brought all of the clothes upstairs and bagged them up for donations. Then I brought, one box of teaching supplies upstairs, and went through each box. Everything there was either donate or recycle. But I don’t think I ever would’ve gotten started if I would have done all the sorting in the basement and if I would have just looked at it as one big mess instead of different categories. The only bad thing is that now, about four years later, my basement is filled with family photos and memorabilia that my dad had Accumulated. We’re talking about photos of ancestors going back 120 years or more. So that’s a big project. I’ve kind of been putting off.

@tgayer1 If you have relatives pass on the photos to them either whilst alive or have photos in bundles with specific names of the recipients. Each younger generation becomes interested in their family history / ancestry at some point in time.

@@tarynmaria_ one day I counted, and there were exactly 50 boxes of photos, and memorabilia! My dad was really into genealogy, and every time a relative passed away their family members would send my dad some of their photos! Plus, my dad himself took tons of photos and always had doubles or triples or quadruples printed!

So many of your tips are directly from The Flylady, things she’s been saying for decades. Like “you can do anything for 15 minutes.” Literally her motto since the early 2000s. Have you been a Flybaby in the past?

Thanks Nancy! I like to keep any boxes I get from Amazon (or other store deliveries) and then fill those up. If you have a lot of reusable shopping bags you don't need anymore you could also try using those! Best of luck decluttering 😊

Thanks. I don’t shop online and not from Amazon. Reusable shopping bags don’t work well with glass items or breakable pieces. I ask neighbors for some but in winter more challenging. @@tarynmaria_
