If you want the laminate on wood to look matte, after you sublimate you can take a fine sanding block to it and sand the whole surface and it gets rid of the gloss and more or less makes it look like the print is just on the wood. :)

I just found this video, and new to sublimation. Couple of questions. 1. Is this still the best processes since a couple of years ago? 2. For the Subi Glaze can you use a heat press instead of a convection oven? 3. Is it the same rules for paint or stained wood? 4. How did they hold up over time? Love the tips thank you
@JustMightDIYАй бұрын
Hi, this is still how we do it. A Heat press should work fine, we found that heating the back before pressing helps keep it flat. Know your product. Stain heated might release VoC that could be harmful or prevent absorption. We gave them out as gifts and so far they have no problems! 😁

Very informative video but I do have one question. Are any of these okay for outside decor use? Thank you guys.
@JustMightDIY4 ай бұрын
Hey! Glad you like it. As with all outdoor decor, the answer will be it depends (on your climate, which method you use and *where* outdoors it is). Once you control for the environmental extremes (generally keeping things out of direct sun and rain), you’ll want to be sure you start with a bit thicker wood that won’t warp as easily with moisture and be sure you’re using a sublimation ink with a high UV resistance to help them last as long as possible outdoors. Hope this helps!

I'm new to your channel... and wondering if you've done any videos of sublimation on bare wood? I was about to test the polycrylic matte on bare wood as I'm looking for a more muted print that may even show some grains through the images. I remember sublimating on wood YEARS ago with no prep other than fine grit sanding, but now I can't remember how it turned out. The images would have a clear matte coat put on after to protect from fade, but just wasn't sure about prep. (Getting tired of cutting stencils and using wood stain for everything, especially fixing the bleeds after. )

Hey! That’s going to depend on the type of paint as well as your climate (humidity and temperature). We recommend looking on the label for your specific paint. We tend to err on the side of caution and give most paints 24 hours to dry. Hope this help!

I love using the laminate but more often than not the edges will peel up and I can pull the laminate right off my wood. Any thoughts or suggestions to avoid this problem? Thank you!
@JustMightDIY2 жыл бұрын
We have a couple thoughts. Could be a moisture thing. Wood can have a good bit inside it and can stand to be pressed dry a few times to help push excess out. Be sure to flip and press it a couple times to keep balanced heating / drying. Also, it could be possible it's too smooth and dense, rough grit of 80 to 120 would give the wood ridges for the laminate to grab. As always. Make sure you have good supplies and know times and temperature considerations. Hope something here helps! Let us know

@paulsquire64352 жыл бұрын
After seeing this video, I think the laminate option is the best. But, going back to our experience with paint and polycrylic. We painted 1/2" plywood white, with flat latex paint (sprayed, not brushed). Then coated with Minwax Polycrylic. Pressed sublimation image at 385 degrees for 60 seconds on light pressure. The paper stuck as expected, but the paint bubbled quite badly, especially where heat transfer paper was not covering the board. Our piece was 12", so we had to piece our sublimation image onto our item, hence spaces that were blank without paper over it. We only had parchment paper at the time, not sure how much of a difference one or even two pieces of butcher paper would help with the paint handling the heat. We now have the lamination pouches and butcher paper, but I'm worried we'll end up burning the paint still, hence, wasting more material and time. Have you seen the paint burn/bubble before? in any of these 5 ways of sublimating on wood?
@JustMightDIY2 жыл бұрын
Our first consideration is about dampness in the wood itself. 400 ish degrees is enough to vaporize water trapped under the latex. Even if you can't tell it's there, water expand 18k times it's volume from liquid to gas. Try heat pressing the wood and letting it cool before painting. Good luck and happy crafting!

We've done a few on stainless drink ware. It's interesting, but the colors don't pop like on a white background .

@@JustMightDIY I am just getting into sublimation and I'm trying to find a way to sublimate to brushed stainless so I can make it slightly metallic.... Kinda like a hollow foil card just metal

@Stakespecialty there is a product out there called subliglaze. This is the best clear thing we know to sub on a product not specifically designed for sublimation. As always know what material you're attempting to heat up to 400 degrees and make sure it won't be harmful to you

Hi! I really like your videos, you are a fun couple explaining =) , could you recommend a white paint for this process?, I was looking in your links description but I didn't find it, thanks!! I'm struggling doing this process with a thick wood, paint and poly....I'm not sure if is because my wood is super thick or my sublimation paper sticks so bad but , is not working for me yet, I want to try the small rounds you guys are using....

Hey! We just used one of those small white latex paint samples like Home Depot has at the paint counter. Make sure to let the paint fully cure (at least 24 hours) before moving on to the next step. Hope this helps!!

hi, I used laminate which you said was fine but for me it detached from the wood...it didn't work well for me...I don't know why
@JustMightDIY Жыл бұрын
This can be a moisture problem in the wood or incomplete adhesion of the laminate. We had success ironing the wood with the heat press then applying laminate

you could have your epson settings to default to mirror so you don't even have to worry about flipping the designs :) it was on the second screen in your print settings at the bottom.

Hey! Thanks so much for watching and for your comment. We’re aware of the option but like to see everything on screen exactly as it will print.😉

How do you get it so the laminate doesn't bubble?
@JustMightDIY Жыл бұрын
Hey! Our laminate didn’t bubble. However, that could be an issue of moisture in the wood.

ok, first of all I really appreciate the work you put to mnake this video. Now my question is this: I am making a plaque on basswood where most of it will be laser engraved, but I "may" want to put a sublimate pic of the three people in the family this is for (laser engravements of people are not the greatest, so thinking of putting an actual photo on it). I think the thermal laminate would be best way but obviously don't want to cover entire plaque with a laminate film (or maybe I do - new thought I may look into) where I only need a section of the plaque for the sublimate pic. Know what I mean? Don't really want deal with liquid polyacrylic or sub spray. The HTV vinyl might be an idea. I do have a cricuit machine for cutouts or whatever so I wonder if I can print the sublimate, have cricuit cut out the pic on the sublimate and also cut out the base shape on the thermal laminate .... In my writing this comment, I may have given myself something to try out but obviously your video gave me the possibility. Thanks again and if you have any thoughts, I would for sure appreciate them. Thanks again.

another question for you is do you have to paint the wood white if you use a htv or thermal laminate? or the other ones for that matter?
@JustMightDIY11 күн бұрын
Biggest suggestion, try it on wood you don't care about first. The laminate did shrink, so you may need to figure out how much over sized it should be cut to fit the image you're setting to it. The laminate has an adhesive, depending on how grainy your wood is, it might need to be roughed up to give the glue a better chance of success. Ours was fairly grainy and has held just great, indoors for all this time. The htv vinyl also shrinks, just a tiny bit. We would be doing a few trials before putting it to our preferred finished project. Hope this helps😁

Thanks for your tips! How long do you let the paint dry before doing the next step?
@JustMightDIY2 жыл бұрын
Hey! We let it fully cure over a couple of days before moving on to the next step. Hope this helps!

Thanks! Hey will the laminate sheet peel up at all? Or is it really stuck to the wood now?

Hey! Ours hasn’t peeled off yet and feels REALLY stuck to the wood. Hope this helps!

Hi, may i know if i can laminate the wood first, then laser cut?
@JustMightDIY2 жыл бұрын
Hello! We have not tried that, so we can’t say for sure. You will need to be very, very sure to find a laminate that is laser safe if you try it. We have not looked for one yet, so again, we aren’t able to say for certain. However, there are other materials that are both laser friendly and sublimation friendly like some cast acrylics and actual laserable sublimation hardboard. We’d recommend checking those out, too!
